Ability Power "Powerhouse" Items

Stacona··7 votes·1,372 views

With the Infinity Edge and Essence Reaver in the game being the "powerhouse" items for marksmen I am thinking there could be a similar aspect for mages with Rabadon's Deathcap and another item on the same price point and in turn the same power level, one item for hard hitting damage and the other for a greater DPS on mages. Things could even be forced to be one or the other and can never have both items at the same time, but can be traded between each other for free like the Hydra items.

Will be throwing out my ideas now, but remember to leave behind feedback for improvement and give your own thoughts!

Death Tome: Recipe: Amplifying Tome (435g) + 765g = 1200g

Statistics: +20 Ability Power +UNIQUE Passive - Death Magic: Gain 20% increased Ability Power.

Time Staff: Recipe: Fiendish Codex (800g) + 400g = 1200g

Statistics: +30 Ability Power +10% Cooldown Reduction +UNIQUE Passive - Time Magic: Gain +10% Cooldown Reduction per 150 Ability Power up to a maximum of +20% Cooldown Reduction.

(This is a maximum of +30% Cooldown Reduction to clarify)

Rabadon's Deathcap: Recipe: Needlessly Large Rod (1250g) + Death Tome (1200g) + Blasting Wand (850g) + 300g = 3600g

Statistics: +120 Ability Power +UNIQUE Passive - Death Magic: Gain 35% increased Ability Power.

This item can be traded with Rabadon's Deathrod free of cost.

Rabadon's Deathrod: Recipe: Needlessly Large Rod (1250g) + Time Staff (1200g) + Amplifying Tome (435g) + 715g = 3600g

Statistics: +120 Ability Power +10% Cooldown Reduction +UNIQUE Passive - Time Magic: Gain +10% Cooldown Reduction per 150 Ability Power up to a maximum of +20% Cooldown reduction. Additionally increase your Cooldown Reduction cap by +10%.

This item can be traded with Rabadon's Deathcap free of cost.

I thought item 3116 item 3285 item 3157 item 3003 item 3027 item 3089 were AP Powerhouse Items.

**Although, I really love your ideas.

The other items I consider top tier utility items- rylais slow, ludens burst, hourglass defense, embrace is kind of with all its flat ap it gives but it has the shield and mana, rod of ages with health and mana

What i was getting at was pure damage aspects of deathcap for the most power you can make with a single spell and deathrod with less powerful spells, but a lot more spells so they are pure power in that regard rather than having other utilities with them - and I set up my idea with deathrod to be the new cdr cap (even with cdr mastery) with the item, its requirements, and a cdr item like morellos/grail to fulfill the final 20% cdr needed

baby items I think is interesting to get weaker versions of the final passive kind of like you can buy the baby item, sit on it for awhile as you get complete other items and then finish your Rabadon's item at a later point and introducing the hydra effect to other items I think would be cool to as in trading the final tier items back and forth but can never have both items at the same time. One scenario example could be you wanted deathcap's AP for the mid game power and then trade it in for deathrod's immense CDR it and increased cap it grants to help kill the tank in the late game sacrificing your ability to one shot squishies in the process having that give and take aspect (not to mention an increased CDR cap item can make certain mages viable that otherwise are not currently viable / make weaker mages stronger without directly buffing them)

I agree whole heatedly :)) I hope someone spots your ideas

item 3027 item 3003 are investment items. They take time to ramp up.

item 3116 item 3157 Defensive/utility items that happen to provide quite a bit of power.

item 3285 item 3089 yes.

Sounds like a really cool concept, only issue i find is that increasing the CDR cap by 10% will get abused, with a max (with masteries) of 55% CDR, thats INSANE. imagine Kassadin's ult for example : 2 second cooldown, then max cdr, it would be a 0.9 second cooldown, that is URF level.

Stacona1 votes

There is a lot of things preventing it from being URF - the main thing being being mana and not even close to 80% CDR

RoodToob1 votes

The mana i agree with, however Kassadin (as that was my example) had his ult modified for surf for it to be only a one second cooldown at its lowest, and if Kassadin went seraphs into roa, mana hardly is an issue as well

I looooove it.

Though increasing the cap is a bit troublesome. At the most I'd increase it by 5% or not at all.

I like the "time magic" passive, i made a suggestion a while ago about new cdr items and one was similar, CDR as an item passive is a good intapped idea, adding that mages need a CDR item that doesn't force them to buy mana regen

Stacona1 votes

It kind of forced since the last 20% needed to reach the full cap is the mana regen items of morellos or grail; but I know what you mean of having a big ap cdr item without having mana or mana regen attached to it

Time Staff is too powerful; it gives the equivalent of Essence Reaver's CDR for half the price and also doesn't synergize well with the wealth of 20% CDR items already in the game. I'd suggest removing the base 10% CDR and just giving it a cap of 20% at 300 AP.

Stacona2 votes

Except you need a minimum of 150 AP for 10% and minimum 300 AP for 20% ; also you cannot compare mage items and marksman items together ; values do not round up unlike % ratios do; it is far from being too strong.

It already is built from fiendish codex for the ap and cdr and 10% cdr is 350gold roughly; so granting all its stats it can give it is still barely gold efficient which you have to meet a requirement to get it in the first place - most of the power in the passives are in the completed passives in the final tier item- baby items are entirely to help smooth out the build recipe / gold cost to reduce large purchase points and can slowly build up to the final item rather than have the items with gigantic combine costs

Time staff should definetly be more expensive but it doesnt need to synergize with Morelos and Athenes, you dont necessarily need full cdr, and also you can get rest from runes. Though i wouldnt be against a new 10%cdr item for mages

AHAHAAHA WEALTH OF 20% CDR ITEMS IN THE GAME THAT'S HILARIOUS.

For mages there's item 3165 , and even that isn't the best thing to build sometimes.

Or; And stay with me here, revert some of the massive nerfs that they have performed on the primary AP items like Luden's, Zhonyas, Morellonomicon and (GASP) Frost Queen's Claim.

Stacona1 votes

Those items are in a good spot right now, Deathcap's gold cost needs to be toned back, it should have never been nerfed in the first place - my ideas did tone back its price to be more reasonable

The Loveless1 votes

I upvoted bt you gotta be careful with so much AP and CDR. Combining dcap with that final time item is like giving ad champs loads of damage on top of attack speed in the same items. Can you imagine if IE gave attack speed on top of everything else?

Stacona2 votes

that is why you cannot have both, you can trade them for free, but cannot have both so at all times you decide between hard hitting damage OR high DPS for a mage; I figured this is cooler to be a decision making process rather than have 2 strong items that someone can eventually get both of (I learned from Infinity Edge and Essence Reaver stacking, which is fine but in this scenario with AP equivalents it might get a little crazy especially since they both would give 120 AP) so to make things not feel mandatory you have to CHOOSE if you currently want high one time damage or less hard hitting damage for more abilities to cast over time

Nekusen1 votes

Time Staff should give 50 AP, 10 CDR and 5% movement speed, it's passive, be built from codex+wisp and cost no less than 2500 gold

1500 gold item after its stat requirements being at 1200 gold, before hand its an 800 gold item at 1200 gold

your idea is a shtty mid tier item at 1800 gold priced at 2500 gold not realizing the purpose of the baby items is to reduce combine costs of the final item and are from gold efficiency; the power is in the completed item but create a smoother transition

Baby items are to be get early game, no one will get an item that works around having 300 ap early, kinda why people dont buy deathcap until late.

It has no characteristics to be an early game item. Deathrod is unnecesary and increasing the cap even more is very problematic. Timestaff passive to strong for the price and we dont need more single path items for ap builds.

The item itself shouldn't give a lot of ap is it should need a few other items to activate the passive as it would be providing by itself almost a max cap of cdr. I think that Time Staff is the item worth salvaging from your suggestions given the adjustments i suggested above.

Stacona1 votes

it is a mid game item to smooth out the gold cost- that is its purpose

Nekusen1 votes

They will never add an item that by paying 1200 gold it boosts you cdr by 30%. There is a reason of why most items need to be fully built to give their ability.

There is no reason not to get your time staff, everyone would rush it as a second item, get a 100ap item first, get some AP from runes and get time staff, thats 30AP and 20%CDR for 1200 gold, thats insane (plus that you get 10% more cdr later on)

Stacona1 votes

Rod of Ages, Manamune, Archangels, Mejai's Soulstealer...

Also you need 3 completed ability power items to get 301+ AP for the 30% cdr

Fiendish Codex already gives ap and cdr for 800 gold, 400 more gold for 10% cdr isnt even a deal and you need 3 items for the other 10% which 1500 gold at 1200 gold is nothing crazy

Sole purpose of my baby items is to smooth out the gold cost to the final item

Nekusen1 votes

I dont see what the items you mentioned are supposed to example for.

You need only 1 item for the item to give you 20%cdr, as i explained.

Not a deal? Id lay 1600 gold for 40%cdr any day. Adding that you could buy another fiendish codex as the passives dont stack.

Not only extremely cheap, but also slot efficient.

Simply, the existence of said item would be a must buy and everyone would rush it.

As i said, i think the best way of make it viable (as i like the passive),would be making it a final item, making it cost +2500 g, giving it 50ap and 5% ms, and adding aether wisp to the build path. As it is, it wouldn't last a day in the pbe before removal.

Stacona1 votes

You need 3 items - I am saying it won't round up like ratios, so it is a minimum of 150 ap and minimum of 300 ap; you can complete morellos and grail and have 20% cdr from one time, i based the cost to stats on fiendish codex so the item is on equal level and not overpowering compared to others

You cannot rush an item that has a requirement for the unique passive, all you did was buy an expensive fiendish codex. The whole point to the full item is a high tier AP and CDR item and be a pick and choose between BIG abilities of deathcap or more abilities with deathrod and cannot have both at the same time ever (because I learned that if you have multiple largest flat AP items in the game people would just try to get all of them in their builds)

The item has no problems and its impossible to rush, a lot of people would sit on a fiendish codex, this item is intended to smooth out gold costs PERIOD. If you get 20% CDR is that stat equal for the gold cost - 30% is SLIGHTLY efficient, but you need a 3 item build one being the completed item for this passive
