Why would one pick a mage instead of an assassin mid?

Mage=mid to long range ap champion with high mobility and high burst dmg Assasin= mid to short range ad/ap champion with high mobility and even higher burst dmg

Other than Azir Ryze who can do dps burst dmg as mage, most other mages are still all burst champions. Assassins usually have shorter range than mages(coughZed cough) but their mobility will easily make up for the range difference. Why would anyone pick a mage who has no mobility and hard to get through the front line, instead of assassins who has insane mobility and arguably higher burst dmg?

Assassins tend to lack CC and Utility compared to Mages.

Syndra, Lux, Orianna, Lissandra, etc., all have valuable Utility in their kits that assassins don't have. I personally like Mages because even if I'm behind, my CC is still useful unlike an Assassin who is behind.

better late game and better team fighting. obviously a good assassin can snowball all other lanes and make it a nightmare

because mages do a ton of AOE damage on top of CC and bring utility.

Lux still significantly more viable than most assassin mids.

  • Mages have more poke range
  • Mages don't have to even got close to burst a target
  • Mages bring more utility
  • Mages have more AoE

Mages bring Long range poke/wave clear/utility. Some, like Malzahar and Swain bring DoT damage which is very helpful against tanky team comps.

mages have much more utility and tend to have better sustained damage
