Smiteless junglers should get warned before the game start

The Deckowner··296 votes·6,437 views

Title.

Just wasted 30 minute of my life because my jungler forgot to get smite, he said he had been top 6 queues in a row but people dodged so he thought he was still top.

Please just make the system prompt the jungler and warn then if they didn't take smite.

One of the problems is that if didn't play jungler in the previous game, then go to the next lobby you choose smite. If someone from that lobby dodges, the spells revert back to the previous game. So sometimes you think you already switched to smite, but in fact you switched in the previous lobby. Spells should stay at whatever you picked in the previous lobby and not necessarily the previous game.

This is exactly the issue

I normally do fill, so the times I seem to get jungle are rare. I had this happen to me earlier today and I felt so bad about it when I noticed my smite got switched back around cause I forgot it did that. It makes no sense to me since your masteries and rune switches remain.

Bubblé5 votes

They just need to make it work like runes and masteries.

I think if you are selected as a jungler, your D should automatically be replaced with smite.

digimonteamjacob4 votes

Please no I use F for smite. I'd get rekted.

Shadòw1 votes

would be a problem if you swap roles

Galihan5 votes

It would only be a problem if it locked your summoners', but just setting them upon being assigned jungle and letting you redo your keybinds afterwards would probably be fine.

macromite14 votes

but d is for flash. I don't want to run smite and ignite every game.

Quort22 votes

I also use the D key for flash. It is the far superior key binding.

By far, indeed.

D is for dash, you could even replace flash with ghost and it would still work.

I rebinded my keys, I NEED wasd for camera controls lol. I use x for my flash key.

wind guy3 votes

how do u even bind camera to keys?

Jeanne fan club4 votes

It should be in camera controls, its one of the expanding tabs underneath the ability hotkeys when you press escape. It takes a solid 7 minutes to rebind everything because you basically ruin all the defult binds. But Its worth it for me.

dapositiveviking3 votes

whats your skill keys?

Jeanne fan club4 votes

I have them on my mouse, but I still use R for ult. I also put one item as E, then fill the bottom of the keyboard with the rest of the items, my trinket is still 4 however. My control scheme looks like a complete mess, but it works for me at least.

wind guy4 votes

lol i love hearing about people's custom bindings its always so weird

Jeanne fan club3 votes

I doubt you will find one more messed up than mine lol. Whatever works for me I guess.

F is for fire (smite/ignite) D is for dash (ghost/flash) And S is for suck my dick you inferior "F is for Flash" player. Mine is clearly the more optimized and rational way of having summoners.

Faker has Flash on F.

Case closed.

F is for Flash, D is for Damage.

Ghost is for losers.

Ghost is for losers.

45% bonus movement speed over 10 seconds and no unit collision sounds bad eh?

TequilaZombie4 votes

Ghost is pretty good, but the second that I admit that I lose the F is for flash argument.

Sonspot3 votes

I love how this discussion of an actual issue in league turned into an argument over which key binding is better for flash.

Shadòw2 votes

true.

But honestly it shouldn't even be an argument because everybody knows Flash belongs on F

FINALLY!!! Someone that get's me.

This explains it all

Also, Faker uses Flash on F. [slayer-jinx-wink]

No. F stands for flash.

Either that or stop resetting spells after dodges (it doesn't reset masteries and runes, why just for spells?)

The Deckowner4 votes

exactly.

Or make jungle items buyable without smite. Obviously you can't buy a smite upgrade (and enchantment because they depend on smite upgrades) without smite, but i can't see how talisman could be abused by laners. It would still suck if you forgot your smite, but it wouldn't completely kill your early and midgame.

Battlecast Sona2 votes

this is specifically to prevent people like WW, Udyr, etc who definitely don't need smite to clear the jungle from getting an unfair advantage over other junglers. You still lose smite securing, but you can do cheesy stuff like teleport ignite jungle udyr or whatever and it's pretty lame to play against.

I also think it's probably to prevent non-junglers from building jungle items to option-select into junglers. Like if I'm getting dunked top lane it might be worth to pay 350 gold to get bonus exp in the jungle, you know?

morris15 votes

I could see the first argument working out, but the second one seems pretty useless to me. And if you give up objective control and camp smite buffs for another summoner spell it seems like a worth trade personally. And since you don't have smite you can't play WW with red smite to duel people or Udyr with blue smite to chase or escape.

Szunray4 votes

I love how Riot says they dont enforce metas, but then force junglers to take smite and buy jungle items, or else be completely useless for the entire game.

redfeenix2 votes

What if we removed Smite as a summoner, and put it on an item instead.

I hate how the role of jungler has progressed of late. It's still my main, but there used to be a time where Smite wasn't mandatory. I'm not implying that I wouldn't get it or anything, but it has gotten to the point that a jungler simply cannot sustain a realistically positive role on the team without Smite present. I forgot Smite for one game this season. It was the scariest match I've ever had, and my team's support was quite strong. I even bought a backup plan, the Hunter's Potion. That in itself was a questionably good idea, as the sustain it provides is peanuts when your clear rate is that abysmal.

It used to be that junglers could keep up in level, and therefore relevance, even if their jungle was grudgingly hard to clear without a jungle item. They, instead, had to invest in a jungle item to scale up their gold income to ensure their relevance lategame. However, with experience being the price paid for lacking a jungle item, if you fail to perform for whatever reason, you are now behind in level and gold, which leaves a compounding penalty to your clear speed and vulnerability throughout the entire game.

The entire jungling scheme needs rethought, methinks. It's one thing to make a spell tied to a role, but another completely to make a role this dependent on a spell.

Battlecast Sona3 votes

I think they should take a look at how catch-up exp works now for supports (it feels a lot better if you die as long as you're achieving something) and look into taking those values and applying them to the jungle creep exp bonuses that are already in place. I feel like this may be a holdover from the previously pretty poor differentiation of what level you were (level 2 and 2% exp to next level is the same as level 2 and 99% exp to next level).

I don't understand why people keep talking about smite not being mandatory because it hasn't been really possible to jungle without smite for quite a while (since... season 2?) very effectively. I definitely think if they're gonna tie it directly to the role like that they DO need to clean up the summoner spell interactions with DQ/NCS right away - I've had a fair number of support games where I end up with summoner spells like teleport because of the same issue, though it's not QUITE the same as not having smite on a jungler (the tp janna ganks 2 gud).

Terchio3 votes

It was not mandatory before jungle items required Smite. Once that happened, and subsequently they tied that item to experience, it was about 10x harder to jungle without Smite. Even without Smite, you could always get a jungle item before, and farm with ease; 1k damage on a 70 second cooldown wasn't that great, we only really cared about the objective secure. Now it has lower cooldowns, buff effects on monsters, the key to jungle items, and much more difficult leveling (requiring 2 camps to hit level 2 alone is very detrimental and time-consuming to anyone's clear speed).

If you hadn't noticed the changes, you probably didn't test them out very often. It's much harder now than it was back then to go Smiteless.

Meta Phyton3 votes

I like it. Maybe not a whole pop-up in our faces, but a little ping by the spell, like "hey buddy, you're looking pretty smite-less there. did you forget something?"

This would just reinforce the personal problem I have with enforced roles. IE, there's only one strategy. In a real sport, formations vary and are equally viable depending on the skills of the team. For example, if League were a real sport, it should be equally viable to have three mid and one each top and bot with no jungler, as to have the current meta. It makes a game more interesting when you see different formations from the opponent each game.

That said, as long as they're going to enforce this meta, they may as well go all the way. It'd be impossible in blind pick, but in draft, as long as your role is set to jungler, it should give you a reminder to take Smite. It shouldn't be too hard to code.

Dude. Roles are to e-sports what positions are to real sports. So are you seriously going to tell me that a football team should have like 15 quarterbacks, 1 halfback, and leave all the other positions vacant?

Dude. Roles are to e-sports what positions are to real sports. So are you seriously going to tell me that a football team should have like 15 quarterbacks, 1 halfback, and leave all the other positions vacant?

Absolutely not, that would never work. What I mean isn't so much to alter the roles entirely, but rather have variance in placement and tactics. For example, some European football teams play with all their forwards far ahead and one midfielder, while on other teams they prefer to keep three midfielders and two forwards.

Some examples of what I mean might include...

  • Top lane bruiser and a tanky support with Smite, mid lane caster, bot lane ADC and traditional support. Smite is there for objectives and can proc Targon, and it'd be hard to bully that lane out. Alternately, a less sturdy toplaner who deals more damage and a tanky support.
  • Normal top lane, a passive solo botlaner who can control space, and three mid. One caster, one ADC and one assassin who can roam into the jungle now and then for extra farm. Maybe even let the ADC roam for some farm around 5:00. This strategy would either force their jungler to camp mid or would give mid an insane push. Possibly both.
  • Two ADCs mid, one with Smite for objectives. A caster and a pokey support bot, and a normal top. Two ADCs would be able to deal enough damage without abilities that most mid lane casters would have a very difficult time outsustaining them. Meanwhile, in bot, you have the potential for a caster to turn any potential armor rune strategies on its head and burst down the enemy ADC with a tanky support to protect them.

These are just ideas for how the tactics might change, but through them, you can see what I mean. It's not so much that I think it should be an all tank or all ADC game (although I did have a game with four tanks and a Syndra and we absolutely dominated), more than there could be slight variations in how the traditional meta roles are deployed.

Before anyone counters with "BUT THAT WOULDN'T WORK BECAUSE...", it expects every player involved as the skill to run such a setup. But that's nothing different from any real sport or, for that matter, normal League play. Any strategy should play to the strengths of the players executing that strategy.

aaronautumn2 votes

Are you asking for a popup to warn them that they don't have smite or saying people should remind their team mates?

The Deckowner8 votes

The system should prompt the jungler to remind them.

Commando Yi2 votes

system should default the jungler to smite if they get jungle spot and they have to manually switch to something else if they intend to swap

Komatose1 votes

Wait doesn't /remake solve this problem..? It literally just happened in one of my ranked games. The opposing jungler forgot smite and they /remaked, no penalty for anyone.

That is only possible when someone disconnect.
