With the preseason changes how does one exactly go about punishing sion?

He has great scaling mechanics and has a very forgiving lane phase where he just runs corrupting, spams E and Qs at max range and never fucking goes OOM. Comet is the frosting on top for when he lands one of his Es or Qs.

EDIT

Nevermind, I just realized its the Q bugfix which correctly reduces its cast to 2 fucking seconds when you actually outplay sion and cc him during its channel

You should probably worry when a champion goes from 50.5% win rate to 55% win rate and whose play rate goes up by 150% in one patch

Low play rate and high win rate usually means it's only people with a lot of experience playing the champion. You can get tips and tricks from the boards here, but those players have seen it all and know how to handle a bad situation when it presents itself. The only thing that is truly going to help you here is practice.

6.5% play rate isn't that low

It's not particularly high either.

High enough to warrant hm not having 55% win rate top lane, and bonus points is his 55% wr in support which is his second best role.

Well it looks like his pick rate is on the rise, so if his win rate stays the same or goes up he could use some nerfs. If his win rate drops, however, it can just mean he is good when in experienced hands.

I personally think that win rate combined with the current pick rate is perfectly acceptable, but with his pick rate going up we'll soon see the truth of the matter.

He doesn't actually scale that well; as the game goes on it gets harder and harder for him to land a q without being interrupted or an ult workout being body-blocked or dodged.

As people get more CDR for their stuns and knockups and silences and dashes, as people get boots 2 and zeal items and aether wisp items, as teams start to move as 5 and every squishy has a frontline standing in front of them, Sion has a much harder time getting any of his abilities off.

He's pretty good at peeling, but he has a hard time diving into the enemy team and locking them down. His hp can keep scaling up, but the difference between 5k hp and 10k HP is a lot smaller than you would think. And I don't care how much hp he has, past something like 15-20 minutes any damage dealer that isn't insanely behind can knock off his shield before the explosion.

Mostly he's a lane bully with decent teamfight contributions, but if your team stays even and he doesn't beat you in lane, most champions will outscale Sion.

Edit: Look at the winrate by game length http://na.op.gg/champion/sion/statistics/top Apparently it spikes back up a little if the game goes super long, but it's still well under 55%.

it's not preseason

it's riot fixing his gamebreaking bugs that made him too weak

I have been wondering too...while I have not played any Sion this season he is in my champ pool. Oddly, he has solid win rates not only using Comet (55%) but also with Grasp (55%), Glacial Augment (54%) and Aftershock (55%). His overall pick rate is around 7% and lolalytics has him as #12 pick rate for top lane. He is a good 2% win rate above the #2 slot.

Edit: Ohhh...yeah I guess there were 3 Sion bug fixes listed in the 8.3 patch notes:

  1. Fixed a bug where the minion targeted by Sion's E - Roar of the Slayer was incorrectly not made invulnerable to minion attacks
  2. Sion's Q - Decimating Smash now correctly refunds its cooldown to 2 seconds when Sion is crowd-controlled during its cast
  3. Fixed a bug where Sion levelling W - Soul Furnace while in his Passive - Glory in Death caused issues with the amount of maximum health Sion gains from killing enemy units

I wonder if #1 was the cause of a fairly major bug where his E would sometimes fizzle out and do nothing. #2 would be a pretty major fix if that was consistent. #3 seems pretty minor.
