"We gave Gnar 400 auto range that scales so he isn't too oppresive in lane"
The live game proves otherwise vs melee champs without gap closers: Olaf, Darius, Udyr, Garen, etc.

Riot doesn't give two shits about melee champs without gap closers. That should be obvious by now.

If you know what morde does, then you should never be smart enough to let him get close. EVER.

Don't play a melee champ without a gap closer if you're laning against Braum? Not every champion is supposed to have ways to counter everyone else. It's why Darius is so easy to kite and why Veigar doesn't have any mobility options. There are ways to not simply lose your lane entirely, like letting him push to turret and farming there where it isn't safe for him to Mega Gnar you for instance. Wait for your jungler to come up and gank during a period where he just dropped his Mega form and won't be able to go back for the half a minute it takes the cooldown to wear off and his fury to build back up.
And then lose the trade due to him having ridiculous amounts of stats given

The point is that you aren't supposed to sit there and let him do it.
Wukong can E Q W to walk away without taking retaliation.
Jax can hop to him, dodge all his autos, and then stun him for some extra damage before just strolling back.
Darius' pull range is longer than Gnar's early attack range. He can yank Gnar in and force him to use his hop to get away while he just tears into him.
Wukong can be stunned during the animation of his q by gnar and then hit by the boulder, Jax can be stunned after he jumps, gnar can back up a little then throw a boulder, while dodging jax stun. Darius pull has a longer CD than Gnar jump.

Why the hell would you be going in on a Mega Gnar? If you can't automatically tell that I'm referring to going in on the Mini Gnar then that's half your problem. You don't fight Mega Gnar head on. You smack his mini form.
Darius' pull has a longer cooldown but yanking Gnar in means that you can do a lot more damage to him in that split second before he hops away than he can do to you. And if he tries to do damage before hopping away you can make it even harder on him.
Sounds like the issue here is that you don't know how to harass a Gnar.
Either way, the amount of free poke gnar can get by simply zoning you away and spamming his skills is much greater than the amount of damage you can do in the split second before gnar jumps away.
Darius can do well against him with a well timed hook, gnars auto range is shorter than darius Q range.
Darius should be fine, to be frank...
Not sure about Udyr, pretty sure Darius would murder him with a well timed pull just like he does everyone else. Olaf I think would go okay in lane if competent enough. Garen I'm pretty sure would hit lvl 2 and go ham on Gnar and force him out of lane. But never tried it so we'd have to see.

Please, udyr is just one giant gapcloser thanks to his passive.
The problem isn't Gnar, the problem is that without turn rate like in Dota, melee isn't viable unless overloaded to hell.
Udyr is more of a jungler than toplaner. Darius has a pull and is up for a rework anyway. Olaf basically performs bad against ANY toplaner. And Garen has never been a viable pick above silver after he got gutted in S1 (or was it S2?)
Your examples aren't exactly representitive...
