Sightstone [Upgrade Tier Ideas]

Stacona··4 votes·2,133 views

I will list my ideas for some cool tiers, and they will be branching for more diversity, but the first thing I want to state is that Sightstone is unchanged of what it currently is and still has 4 charges, costs 800 gold, and grants 150 health. Now without further to do, let's get started!

Sadly, my Beta thread had died...

WAAAAAY TOO MANY STATS.

These items are for supports, not carries. Adding another upgrade past that makes it even worse.

Stacona1 votes

They are not too many stats - sightstone already gives health - and you are build either mana sustain, ap, or health and you receive those stats - 3400g to get an aura is a support stat and says that auras are very valuable to have- i think they make sightstone into a good late game item for roles that commit themselves to building a sightstone - its not too many stats because i made sure they are not stronger than selfish items like deathcap, liandrys, warmogs, blue sightstone has the most mana sustain but it doesnt give any other stat other than that besides some cdr

SerBlaise1 votes

I think the main point @FantasySniper is making is....Why not buy this on a carry? Why not buy it on EVERY champion? How is this a Niche item if it gives 100 AP or 1000 Mana or etc, etc? That is why these items, while flashy, are not good. It would become an item everyone would buy as opposed to just supports and maybe junglers. Those guys are supposed to TRADE stats for vision. These new items ruin that balance.

(edit for clarity)

Stacona1 votes

They already bought the sightstone - the upgrades is adding on to the sightstone- the item is very gold inefficient if you do not include the sightstone portion-- also, you are trying to predict a result of people before testing it in games with people- everyone also said lucian was super nerfed, kayle was super nerfed, and new ancient golem is extremely overpowered --- as the LIVE results claim the opposite, lucian ended being really overpowered, kayle is still extremely overpowered (just wait to people discover her again then she will get perma banned once more) - and all those ancient golem junglers getting played queue crickets - besides for Nunu, but Nunu was always sitting at being viable--

SerBlaise1 votes

You still didn't answer my main question: Why wouldn't every player purchase one of these items, regardless of their class/role in game?

Stacona1 votes

Because there are better items to get for them - unless you really want the vision of the sightstone you will buy deathcap, you will buy warmogs, you will buy grail, archangel, manamune because those items are better for their roles - as a support item or an item where someone wants to help their team the ultimate sightstones are super strong- but comparing to the selfish power items they are very weak and very gold inefficient- if you maximize the auras (3-5 people) and use the sightstone ward active then they are stronger which is why they are more expensive than the selfish items

SerBlaise1 votes

Sure...but why not both selfish items and vision? I mean, you usually buy some wards anyways, right? (or at least you SHOULD be buying wards, regardless of role). Why not ward AND get decent stats? 100 AP is a pretty high end value for an AP item. I still think that if this was in the game, then everyone would buy them. I agree they are 'better' for supports in the sense that they fit the purpose of supports and junglers better, but I would definitely pick one of them up regardless of role. Vision is just soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo OP.

Stacona1 votes

Honestly, i am not against other other roles from buying the ultimate sightstone, unless you are the support or jungler you should get the sightstone as like a 6th item focusing on your core items of like grail/archangel/morellos, death/dfg, voidstaff, liandrys/rylais/lichbane/hourglass, etc as well as your boots then maybe ultimate red sightstone after that-

i doubt any other role besides support would go the blue sightstone route, and only melee supports and junglers would get yellow sightstone- top lane tanks need to get strong tank items so they wouldnt go yellow at all-- if the mage wants to get red sightstone since mid does need to buy a lot of wards every game then this is fine, i am just against rushing the ultimate sightstones on other roles outside of support or jungler

also, i can see ryze, singed, anivia getting blue sightstone- but i think it would only be good on anivia if she did decide to get this item because it is so sustain heavy for her ultimate even though it does sacrifice all the ap you would get on archangel and shield on embrace

SerBlaise1 votes

I agree: I wouldn't be against it.....my issue is that these items would become like the jungling items: MUST HAVE items for each class if they want to compete in the vision game. As of now you have to balance vision and power. But if I can have 100 AP AND infinite wards instead of having to use extra slots for wards and spend money on them while I'm building my deathcap.....I think I'm going to go with your trinket.

Its not statistically OP when compared with other items of similar offensive or defensive power....its just that will HAVE to be bought for players to realistically compete.

Stacona1 votes

i do not think it is as much of a must as what sightstones are now- since supports and junglers, especially supports, rush sightstone now - i still think they will finish at least one or two other items before continuing past tier 1 sightstone-

BUT i just realized red sightstone may open up more junglers in the mix like fiddle, diana, karthus, etc. so if this is the case then the ultimate sightstones have just accomplished a really good thing for the game of opening up more junglers instead of seeing like 3-7 junglers, and 7 on a really good patch- but considering ap jungler right now is elise, more ap junglers will be nice to see in the game-- as far as supports are concerned i dont think they ultimate sightstones offer any thing new besides a late game options and customization for your sightstone yellow sightstone tier 2 is a recoloured, renamed ruby sightstone- red sightstone will look the same as a ruby sightstone- but anyways

800 gold detour is a pretty big detour since you could get your grail deathhat and voidstaff 800 gold earlier- but it is not like i am against mid mages taking red sightstong - i dont top and definitely not marksmen will be buying sightstones- so having three sightstones in a game, assuming support and jungler buy one, may not be bad- mid lane buys a lot of wards already to justify a sightstone purchase- but i can only see a maximum of 3 sightstones {of course i went AP for the offensive choice because supports are typically AP}

Dude, every smart player ever would make this a core part of their kit, the only reason item 2049's stats suck now is because Vision is all-powerful and desired by everyone. I would buy any one of these as my defensive item for a glass cannon build, and probably even buy several on supports because of those godly auras.

Stacona1 votes

3400 + 3400 + 3400 = 10 200 g ... that is a lot of gold ... think about how long it takes just to get one 3k gold item on a damage role - and you are telling my you will value red sightstone over deathcap, liandrys, dfg, hourglass, rylais, etc on a role that is meant to do damage- for yellow sightstone there is one comparable item which is warmogs, so you are going to pay more gold for less stats, the items will not be fully upgrade until very late game and maybe mid game if you rush it- it is different buying the items if you are a jungler or support- but marksman, mid or top will not be buying these

"defensive item for a glass cannon build" <- Read that again, usually they have at least one defensive item that comes pretty late. Either answer to "it's a lot of gold" presents problems with your sense of balance, either I would because they're just that powerful (Which I'm leaning towards), or I wouldn't and it completely makes the suggestion moot. Come back once you've learned the power of vision.

Stacona1 votes

Rylais has the same AP, more health, and the slow passive, and is cheaper --- Liandry's does more damage has more health, less AP, but more damage with the liandry's burn and even more damage with the flat magic pen--- Rylais must be extremely overpowered to you because of it granting offense, defense, and utility on one item- and then liandry's slightly less op than rylais with defense and a lot of offense...

Sightstone is 800 gold - you already have your wards, yes each tier buffs the sightstone passive with more charges to hold and extra ward range on your sightstone- but the vision is there from the tier 1 --- all you are buying is other stats and tier 3 granting a powerful aura (Tier 4 for blue trinket)--- yes vision is powerful- i don't mind mid lane buying an ultimate red sightstone - they are still not going to rush it though - they will buy 3-4 of their cores items and the 5th items being boots - so an ultimate red sightstone will be a 6th item they will pick up - that is extremely late in the game - and then not sure what else you are complaining about because sightstone is meant for a supportive role for the team so supports and junglers being catered to the sightstone and these upgrades is fine Red sightstone may even open up more AP jungle options and maybe more tank options in the jungle to expand the jungler champion pool by allowing junglers that normally do not buy sightstone to buy a sightstone because besides elise and nunu all the junglers are AD

Tsunday2 votes

I like the idea of more upgrades, but these are way too strong. Do you know how strong Warmog's is on Braum? His Q scales off max hp, giving him that much HP on his sightstone would me 1 shot Qs for days.

Stacona1 votes

What is warmogs, 2800 or 2600 gold and also grants are sht ton of health regen- warmogs is selfishly stronger than yellow sightstone, and you already bought the health - anyways, if you are buying both yellow sightstone and warmogs that is spending 6200 gold for 2000 health all the sightstone upgrades are not very strong for one person alone- but as a supportive team aspect and in teamfights they are extremely powerful- legendary blue sightstone is the only aura that has power on one individual, but it has a few more things you need to do with it

anyways, it's hard to argue support focused items that cost 3400g being op- they should be the strongest items for supports because they are the most expensive items for supports, and legendary blue sightstone has rush restrictions because of the need to max your tear passive out

but overall, health ratio abilities will not be that strong with just 1000 bonus health - 1500 with face of the mountain - but to obtain strictly a large health item you want warmogs because it is cheaper and grants a large amount of health regen as well- and the auras are strong in teamfights, but not that great individual, but still good

Daishø1 votes

This sounds like an awesome idea, but because this is mainly for supports, maybe each tier builds into different things, and when you put them together they create a legendary sight stone. the Legendary blue sightstone gives you ability power, mana, and some health. While the red sightstone gives you attack damage, armor, and health. And each tier could give you a separate thing. Like tier 1 blue sightstone gives you mana, tier 2 gives you health, and tier 3 gives you AP and so on and so on with all the sightstones.

so you build into a item 2049 and then you build the item 2049 with a item 1063 to get the second tier.

Then you build that with a item 3010 and a item 1056 to get the 3rd tier sightstone. That would be pretty awesome. Doran items could finally be built into something, and supports wouldn't have to always farm a lot or stay near their carry to get a decent item.

Stacona1 votes

I divided into basically how runes work with the colours, red is offense which is why your team deals more damage when you are near them and get a bunch of ability power--- yellow is defense granting a small amount of damage reduction and health regen when by your team--- and blue is utility which is why you get sht ton of mana sustain and movement speed with a fully stacked tear- i wanted to give mana regen based on max mana so the item becomes a better variation of blue buff, but i wanted to add a mana cost for the movement speed you get on Legendary Blue Sightstone which is why your costs double- the 2% Mana consume on spell casts is to try to make Ryze not buy this item, because i want Ryze to buy archangel's unless he has a really good reason to buy the support tear version--- long story short i want the sightstone upgrades to be primarily for supports, and maybe other roles can get them in some cases (like lee sin and nunu can get yellow sight stone and elise gets red sightstone since they usually buy sightstones now anyways.. but junglers are a second support role anyways)

Doran items were created and intended to be strictly powerful early game items that DO NOT build into anything

tl;dr : red = offense, yellow = defense, blue = utility (magic resist cause of chalice) --- i want the upgrades to be simple like this

p.s. the ultimate sightstones (and legendary for blue sightstone) have their ward cast range from the standard 600 units increased to 1000 units

p.s. mana hungry, the good side to it, acts like a mana regen so it restores 1-2% mana based on missing mana because of the chalice passive you have

Daishø2 votes

That makes sense, but i wish there were items supports could have that gave them a little bit more power, but wasn't too OP of a starter item that everyone would get them. I usually play support, and usually i have to go with the full support build, which gives me absolutely no damage. Like, you could get 2 doran items and then build a regular build. But you're useless except for setting up kills with your stuns and slows and such. I just wish supports could have some more power without straying to far from a usually build.

Stacona1 votes

Doran items are meant to be early game and Riot won't change that - spellthief edge is actually the highest damage dealing item for starting items---

Anyways, support items should be focused around teamplay- but i made the final upgrades 3400g so they better be powerful and grant some selfish power- but most of the power should be in the team play to avoid the gold getting roles wanting to get the items over the items they should be getting (like tank/bruisers, mages, marksmen getting their selfish high tier items) each aura each ultimate sightstone gives is really strong and the huge ward range the ultimate sightstones are massive improvements for safer warding for the support and support-like roles

p.s. legendary blue sightstone proc'ing Pulse of Energy on spell usage is so that a summoner spell like Exhaust will proc movement speed for your team as well as your abilities

Daishø1 votes

yeah, but there are the meta breaking supps, like Lulu and Annie . Neither have any sustain for their adc, and rely on either using theirs cc's to set up a kill, or like lulu, using her ult to give an advantage. But those supps are kinda punished because they don't have any sustain. This is why i would like better early/mid game items that are a little cheaper. But it is obvious that Riot will keep dorans as starting items.

Stacona1 votes

Lulu was never a support and will never be a support- nor do i want her as a support--- Annie has high kill potential and she can build the Ultimate Red Sightstone to give her more damage and her team more damage since they get the extra bonus % max health and they are stunned from giatn ribber flying down from the sky

It Is I Emoto1 votes

god, annie with a ultimate red sighstone would be.. OP i mean even mid laners could build those sighstones because of those high ratios there is a reason why support's have not that great ratios on their items

Stacona1 votes

I made sure other items are more powerful- Ultimate Red Sightstone is very strong if you include the sightstone and increased sightstone ward placement range- but i made sure Liandry's, Deathcap, Rylais, DFG, Hourglass, etc. are all stronger offensively 3400gold is one a very expensive item to begin with, and two the most expensive AP item What you mean by high ratios? When you deal damage if you own the item or by someone with the item your damage you deal has a bonus 1% of the target's max health to it.

i highly doubt mages will buy red sightstone, but if some mages buy it some games that is not necessary a bad thing, the only thing to watch is if it becomes overally dominant and everyone buys it every game (outside of the support mage/AP-supports)

at 3400 gold i made sure all the auras are very strong and the strength of the items are in the supportive end and not the selfish end-- the thing i be most worried about is support Anivia using legendary blue sightstone because her ultimate expels mana per second so she can proc the movement speed pulse every second while her ultimate is up, but it will use 80/100/120(+2%max mana) mana a second so the very high mana cost hopefully balances it out- other champs like maokai, swain, can do this as well on their ults- but these champions have no reason to get the item- and swain's ult will also last no where near as long because of the item's inflated mana costs it grants

It Is I Emoto1 votes

Yeah, but on katarina it would be a great offensive as defensive item :/ she would have free 5 flashes and does even more damage than before. It would be better if the auras would give additional stats instead of an incredible strong buff. ..tho considering using the red sighstone on harrass supports like sona would be nice, mostly tanks and etc. Dunno, I feel like that 1 % of targets maximum health is extreme strong

Stacona1 votes

all three auras are very strong- not sure if kat will be rushing a 3400 gold item where most of the power is in supportive strength

It Is I Emoto1 votes

Dunno, but how about one sightstone with more sustain? one with armor and magic resist would be really great

Stacona1 votes

That is old aegis/runic - health armour and mr - that is granting everything, plus your wards- i feel like just health and and a little bit of damage reduction is better balance wise

Tsunday1 votes

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. Annie was never a support and will never be a support, Lulu on the other hand is. She has ally buffs (Pix AA buff and speed up), ally sustain (shield + her ult is technically a heal), and enemy debuffs (bush vision, slow, poly, knock up). Annie only has enemy debuffs which you can find on champions in any role, including adcs. Annie is about as supportive as Varus or Renekton.

Tsunday1 votes

Shields count as ally sustain and lulu has a shield. Not only that but her ult is technically a heal. She has just as much sustain as Janna who only has a shield and an ult that heals for sustain.

Daishø1 votes

Thats what i'm saying. Lulu doesn't have any healing sustain, but she has a knock up, a shield, a movement buff, and a steroid kind of in her ult, which she can use on allies. Annie was never supposed to be a support, she was a off meta pick that actually works decently, but has absolutely no sustain, but can be a high damage stun supp. But it would be awesome if they did make sightstones upgradable, and give the supps some power.

Tsunday1 votes

Shield sustain is actually stronger than healing sustain if used right though. It's not as much that Lulu isn't safe it's that your ally has more effective HP if you know how to time it. She's actually pretty safe as a support though because more than setting up kills she has a hole lot of peel. If her shield isn't tanking enough to keep you in lane then when someone jumps on her carry she has the polymorph. Lulu is actually a support I like to play with Kog or Vayne, both of which are ADCs that need a lot of protection and help sustaining in lane.

As for Annie, I don't want to see her get anymore strengths in botlane. I honestly don't think she belongs there. Stuns fit on so many non-support champions, you can have hard CC like that in every lane. Having high damage (what most midlaners have) and CC (what a whole lot of champions in every lane have) shouldn't be enough justification to put her in botlane. If Riot wants to see her put in the botlane, I want to see her shield be castable on allies (and without gaining passive stacks, preferably).

There are a couple of high AP support items though, it's just that nobody builds them. Banner and Spooky Ghosts are both really good on supports like Karma who want the extra damage.

But I wouldn't complain if I could have some non-tank stats on my Sightstone though.

Ghiefelstein1 votes

I really enjoyed reading your ideas. I especially love how each color amplifies a strength. Buying items to specialize worked for gold generation items, so it has potential on sightstone too. It makes supports more unique and adaptable to different situations. You also made sure that these items are most attractive for supports and don't get abused by others.

I still have a few questions. When do you want people to buy these? Rush it early or wait for late game? Upgrading to a color locks you into a path towards some ultimate version. Is that fair to ask at that point in the game? Creating vision from long range is usually temporary and on a long cooldown (twin shadows, blue trinket, clairvoyance). Is warding with huge range not too safe?

Your ideas are awesome and have a lot of potential, I am curious to see how they evolve. And one last tip: don't focus too much on numbers. The hard part is getting the mechanics and directions right. Once those are in place, you can worry about the exact stats. Thank you for sharing this!

Stacona1 votes

I kind of like the idea of long ward range from Feral Flare- because this is very powerful i force the item to be built mid late game with the high gold cost of 3400 - plus 1000 units matches aura ranges- feral flare i'm pretty sure is at least 1200 units so the ultimate sightstone ranges are not quite as long, but they are still very strong- basically the increased ward range is for late game warding

ultimate sightstones are meant to be late game items- blue sightstone is interesting because i wanted to give it the same kind of transformation item as the other tear items so ultimate blue sightstone (outside of ward range) is the weakest of the items because it is just a combination of ruby sightstone, chalice, tear, forbidden idol-- but it gets super strong when you fully stack the tear and transform it into Legendary Blue Sightstone gaining stat gains, a double edged sword mana sustain passive (which the increased mana costs is mainly for the movement speed active-passive), and a nice movement speed buff from spells and mana expenditure

as far as what you fully upgrade first- that is up to the user and the game- but the tier 2 sightstone is necessary to reduce large gold costs and also to have the user decide what path he is going down- then tier 3/4 is expanding on your choice and emphasizing on the power of that colour even further- red - more AP and offensive aura yellow - even more health and defensive aura blue - the highest mana sustain item in the game and a powerful movement speed burst on ability, spell, mana proc

Ghiefelstein1 votes

red - more AP and offensive aura yellow - even more health and defensive aura blue - the highest mana sustain item in the game and a powerful movement speed burst on ability, spell, mana proc

This is a pretty good summary and makes me understand your first post better :)

I wonder which supports would buy the blue stone. Talisman and Mikael's provide mana sustain in combination with powerful supportive actives. I don't know if a movement speed burst can compete with that. Also stacking up a tear is a lot harder for a support than for a mage with access to blue buff.

The red and yellow version look like attractive options. They have simple stats and a single aura to help their team. Red fits for example Zyra or Annie, who generally want AP and are offensively oriented. And I think Braum would be excited about the health and defense on yellow stone.

Stacona1 votes

the item has chalice and tear- you really should not have troubles stacking tear- anivia support may come into play with legendary blue sightstone- sona can spam her auras- nami and legendary blue sightstone will have amazing synergy--- basically the more ranged utility focuses supports will go for blue- the more range damage supports will go for red- the more melee tanky supports will go for yellow (including thresh and gnar)-

the only thing i don't want is the sightstone upgrades being abused and over bought on OTHER roles like how spirit stone items were when they initially were released- but if the other roles have a situational reason to wanting a sightstone then it is different junglers are a second support role so it is fine if that role wants to get the upgrades every game, you can see elise with red sightstone and lee sin nunu with yellow sightstone
