"We should be able to see our ping pre-game"

General Esdeath ··32 votes·1,715 views

Can Riot print these instructions and pin them on the main screen or on boards? I'm sick of seeing 2 or 3 of these a week.

  1. open command prompt
  2. paste ping 104.160.131.1 (add -t if you want it to test for more than 3 pings and it will keep going until you cancel it)
  3. hit enter

You can now see your ping, and any spikes, pre-game.

Why not just have a button on the client which pings the server when you click it though?

Douglas Funnie11 votes

Too many steps, too much work. Too long didn't read. Listen, there should be a ping indicator on the updated client. The client was updated to improve it's implementation of future features. This is a feature a lot of people want. So, why are you opposed to this? It doesn't hurt you at all. It actually helps you. You will be playing with players who know they're not lagging from the start.

Not everyone who plays league is tech savvy. People don't want to waste time checking ping by creating a custom match. It's a time consuming process. With a ping indicator, players will know right off the bat their ping is good and they're ready to jump into a Ranked/Normal game.

It doesn't hurt you or anybody else. It actually improves the quality of games by playing with players who are not lagging and going afk during Ranked games.

Bobbinson1 votes

if that's too difficult for you but typing out a lecture is alright then theres something wrong with you nobody is going to give a fuck about a ping indicator as 90% of players can actually afford a stable connection

Not everyone who plays league is tech savvy.

Opening command prompt and hitting ctrl+v requires being tech savvy?

https://media.tenor.com/images/8e844cd3eb98c8157f0b4451aa672d5a/tenor.gif

Problem with everyone continually pinging Riot servers is that everyone is going to lag more. But..uh...if using a basic function in cmd is too "tech savvy" for people......they aren't going to understand that.

Adding a button you can click to do an automated ping check in pre-game lobby would be nice though. But really....it isn't that hard.

Highlight 'ping 104.160.131.1' Hit ctrl+c Hit windows key, type cmd, enter Hit ctrl+v, enter

Look at average ms = xx, add about 10 or so to that, that'll be roughly your ping in game. Type exit, hit enter.

If that's too complicated for people...maybe those people shouldn't be playing League.

Also an automated ping will be misleading, because whatever a basic ping check says, is not what your ping will be in a real game. And again, adding in continual ping checks for everyone logged into client will globally increase ping.

So, do you want everyone to lag more just so everyone will know (kind of) how much they are going to lag by? Is that worth the cost?

Correct me if im wrong, but league of legends is a game which requires a constant internet connection, both in client and in game. So the ping is, regardless, being checked because you need that connection to riot.

Whats so hard with making that visible in the main client UI? Put a little counter in the upper right corner of your nameplate during champ select and put one in the lower left corner of your nameplate in lobby. Its not that hard is it? The data is already there, it just needs to be shown right?

Client server isn't game server(s). There's even times you can log in while the game servers are down. Even when Riot puts the client on Unavailable mode, you can (sometimes) still log in. Unsure on new client how that works, but on old, you could use 'thereisnourflevel' and before that, The Konami Code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, enter).

Also being connected to the client/game server and pinging the client isn't the same thing. The server has no idea how fast you receive the information it's sending, it just sends it. Pings are a special little blip of data that measures exactly how long it takes for that blip to go from your computer, to their server, and back again. It's just a little blip (very small amount of info). But if everyone is continually blipping the server without actually being in a game, it adds up to a lot more data the server has to handle, even on low-load/usage times (like 2am on a monday morning vs 8pm on a friday night).

Riot could have an algorithm to shut down automatic pinging for people 'away' from LoL, so that would minimize the amount of extra load. But it's still extra, and it's still not just as simple as displaying info that's 'already there.'

I'm not saying Riot can't, or shouldn't, add some form of out-of-game ping check, but it's never as simple as forum people claim it is. Or without cost. Even in a literal way, continuous pings from every person logged into the client would actually cost Riot a fairly considerable amount of money (in the form of electricity and bandwidth usage). I mean comparative to how much money they make, and the amount of bandwidth they use anyway, it would be a small amount. But it'd still be an amount they'd have to make up somewhere along the way.

Do we want to lower the drop rate for keys or gemstones by another 0.1% globally to make up for the cost? =p

It REALLY isn't.

Windows+R "cmd" Enter "ping 104.160.131.1"

Ok sure but why7 votes

Hey, I can check my ping just fine. It's my autofilled Idiot McGee support I'm worried about.

If you notice something like "server did not respond" multiple times it means you're lagging a metric ton.

is this a del system32 thing ;D jk, thank you! I have a friend who could make use of this before going to ranked :)

It probably goes up because LoL takes a lot of space. It's still accurate enough to tell you if you go past hundreds, where you should just not start a q.

General Esdeath 1 votes

It's gonna take more because now you're running a program and connecting to 9 other players. Compare custom games vs a bot to custom games vs 1 or 2 people.

I know exactly 0 about coding so I might be wrong but- (oh wait that's the IP for Riot's servers isn't it)

General Esdeath 1 votes

Yep

Who is Taliyah1 votes

Ok I know nothing about all of this, but when I paste ping 104.160.131.1 it shows me 132 ms when I paste ping 104.160.131.1-t it shows me 32 ms and another IP

Can you tell me what's that about? I'm from europe playing on EUW if that helps.

3TWarrior1 votes

place a space between 1 and -t

i'm not sure what address it is sending to with that code but the two user inputs are separate

General Esdeath 1 votes

This is the NA IP so that's why it's 132 and put a space between the 1 and -t

Who is Taliyah1 votes

Thanks! Do you also know the EUW IP?

General Esdeath 1 votes

No, I don't know if Riot ever released it because they never had a server move

Who is Taliyah1 votes

Actually they had. They moved the EUW server from Frankfurt in germany to amsterdam in netherland in 2014 or so.

General Esdeath 1 votes

I don't know if they released it though, rip my info

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

You should add that your ping is equal to the time value that shows up and not the bytes or TTL values.

General Esdeath 1 votes

I just left it as is because mine tends to show the exact same number next to "ms" in the LoL client, simpler for people who don't know what ping is

HAAHAAHAHAHAHA1 votes

Or.. if you have half a brain, you can check your ping with team-speak easily.

General Esdeath 1 votes

Only someone with half a brain would use team-speak :^)

Shadòw1 votes

let's be honest.. do you do that before every game?

what if you think your internet is fine and only realize the moment you get into the loading screen that it's not?

especially for that case a small ping icon in client would be good.

General Esdeath 1 votes

No but that's because I always do a custom since my PC once had an issue. I used to do it when I was getting lag in a game I would leave it on for about 5 minutes and check for any packet loss. Also your second line could be said for a ping checker in client too. What if it spikes during game?

Shadòw1 votes

in that case there is nothing you can do anyway. that would be just unlucky.

but let's ask the relevant question..

would it hurt anybody if a small ping checker would be added?

General Esdeath 1 votes

No but until it's added this is a solution for people instead of spamming the boards and complaining about their connection

BasedNerd1 votes

Or they could just add it into the client? I don't see how this is an argument, it's more of a deflection. There could just be a "ping test" button in the settings and that'd be the end of that. I don't really care because my ping is below 50 90% of the time, but for other people, I don't see why not? You think everyone wants to, let alone is going to go through all that just to test their ping? Nope. At best they'll play a norm or a bot and rough it, and at worst they'll just hop into ranked and hope for he best.

General Esdeath 1 votes

They could, but for now I'm putting a solution for people to see instead of bitching about it. Until it's added, just use this or do a custom like I do.

Aeszarck1 votes

That's only the IP for NA. For the EUW, EUNE, and OCE players, there are different IPs.

Gonna check my post history and find those IPs. Will update when I do.

Edit: Found it! https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/QbyHYO5E-i-didnt-deserve-this-leaverbuster-rito-pls?comment=00000000 There are also some helpful tips below Wuks's post about how to make a batch file so all you have to do is open the file instead of opening command prompt and typing the command.

General Esdeath 1 votes

Most of the people I see complaining are NA, good point.

50000000000000001 votes

How did you figure out the IP for the game server?

General Esdeath 1 votes

I believe Riot released it way back when they moved the server, I found it from a reddit thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/3g2lab/you_can_check_what_your_ping_will_be_when_the/

50000000000000001 votes

Ah, okay. I tried to ping pvp.net before, but that didn't work out.

Does this work for Mac/Terminal as well?

Edit: Yes but it does it automatically without -t

I just load a custom to make sure.
