Ranged top laners absolutely ruin her. Since they can safely clear the tentacles without ever being in her danger zone.

As an Illaoi player myself. I would recommend Kennen, its the one match up I flat out can't stand as Illaoi.

Kennen can safely poke her to death with Q and auto attacks while I strugle to even get in idol slam range. He also deletes the tentacles without any risk. And Illaoi can't safely engage at 6 either since Kennen has a free escape with lightning rush, or he can counter engage with his ult.

Kennen?

Bruh have you even laned against a top malzahar?

That shit makes kennen look bearable.

Not with Malz's rework. This is coming from several months ago when I actually gave a damn about playing.

As a Juggernaut, Illaoi is prone to kiting. Poke and kite her to succeed against her in lane. If Illaoi uses her ultimate, immediately disengage from her no matter how low she is on health unless you have an execution ultimate. Buy boots early to help dodge her skillshots. Armor items, especially Frozen Heart, dramatically reduce her damage output. Rushing Executioner's Calling or Morellonomicon will end her chances to stay in lane.

There are three different kinds of counterpicks for Illaoi. Here they are in order from least recommended to most recommended: 3. Champions who can kite and keep her at a distance Karma Cassiopeia Ryze Teemo Quinn 2. Champions with the ability to quickly become invulnerable or untargetable, enabling them to disengage or reengage regardless of her tentacle location Tryndamere Vladimir Lissandra Kayle

  1. Execution ultimates (or sometimes basic abilities) that prevent Illaoi from getting her damage down after ulting Garen Volibear Riven Chogath Pantheon Ekko

Also count darius into the mix. Healing, dmg, slows, pulls and more dmg throught lvl's 1-5. Even at lv 6 you can dunk more than her,if you of course dodge her Q's and Tentacles.

Illaoi is only strong if you fight her around her tentacles. Just clear them up if they pop up. DO NOT fight her when she ults, just walk away from her. Once her ult expires she sucks again. Her only real sources from damage are her Q, which has a mildly lengthy windup animation, and her auto reset W which is more of a gap closer. Yesterday My team picked Draven for one-for-all and the enemy team got Illaoi. We won. They hit decently hard with like one or two damage items, but I build a randuins omen and it really cut their damage down by a good chunk. Most of the time They wont build any sustain/lifesteal item because they'll be depending on their tentacles to heal them so it's actually very possible to out-sustain them with lifesteal or death's dance on most champs. I think Wukong would be great at harassing the hell out of Illaoi since he can dodge her test of spirit with his clone and disengage her too, as well as re-engage when her ult expires, harass her during lane with his targeted auto, and burst her down if shes low on hp with his ult. Crowd control is also pretty effective on her since she has no disengage at all.

When i clear a tentacle another one re spawns at that moment then illaoi proceeds to w onto me then that tentacle slams down so clearing the tentacle legit just got me hit with another tentacle and all the while this is happening shes building tank items doing broken ass damage And god help you if she pulls your soul and then ults thats a good 45 - 60% of your health then you have to recall and then repeat the lane process of dodging tentacles and eating her poke with q and soul grabs.

her passive has around a 12-15 second cd

think of illaoi like zyra

fight her before she gets a zone setup

Illaoi also has a really bad level 1 inherently when you make that comparison so if you have someone like say garen, renekton etc, you'll probably win trades if you can get close enough

she also will run oom faster than you might think if she uses her q/w to clear waves

She's also very weak to people who can poke her out of her range, or ranged champs in general

Biggest illaoi counter :item 1001 (I'm serious)

Darth StepVader3 votes

The only absolute counter to her that requires the MINIMUM brain usage is this: Nasus . It's so stupidly easy for him to annihilate her. She can never catch you to kill you during your early weak levels, you lifesteal by stacking her tentacles, you welcome her E curse because it means more stacks for you, she ALWAYS pushes the waves due to her silly passive so freelo. After a few minutes of endless free stacking and building armor, you straight up walk to her and blow her up OR you simply let her try to harass you in vain while she goes oom and then pummel her down. It's really easy.

Other counters include ranged champions. She utterly pathetic against them. And above all else, never forget that, if kited and poked in teamfights, she becomes almost useless.

You forgot Garen,Malphite and Pantheon

If illaoi rushes iceborn/sunfire instead of cleaver she eliminates Garen and Panth easily. Malph is indeed a good champ to face her with since he can always fight her and get out and is more effective in tf's. But, he will get pushed under tower a lot during laning phase and he wont be able to farm effectively. So, by picking him you run the risk of falling behind in cs and towers.

Nasus, if played correctly, can easily outfarm illaoi and keep his tower up long enough, in order to reach that point that he can easily take objectives really fast. I consider him to be the undisputed counter to her among melee champs.

Move very slightly to the side on any Champion.

Nasus can stack on her tentacles and make her harass negligible with his sustain.

You really want to try and out-range her, poke her down and clear her tentacles (as others have suggested).

She is pretty strong when it comes to health sustain. Grievous Wounds is really nice to have against her. summoner 14 item 3033 item 3165 ...

Use a champions with auto attack resets to take out her tentacles quickly.

Look for her to attempt to grab you when she is near a tentacle. Stay behind minions.

when that woman ults your more concerned about getting the fuck out of dodge than trying to out duel and kill her in it and the way she heals with all those tentacles in a teamfight its just beter to save your ignite for a squishy

I'm pretty sure that this is more directed at dealing with her during laning phase, so there aren't likely going to be any other squishies around to save ignite for. I would say use it to put her down early so you can keep her behind. It is the only early game form of Grievous Wounds available to everyone. I strongly recommend ultimately getting one of the items however.

As far as her ultimate goes, .. yeah, it's an ultimate, of course you want to respect it. However, it is most effective in team fights or when she is ganged up on. She will most likely save it to counter a gank or use it out of desperation. In a 1v1, at best she will only have 2 ult summoned tentacles (you and your clone), which is formidable, but considerably weaker than when your team is stacked against her. I am definitely not saying that you should try and duel her at this point, but it is certainly possible. And again, I can't stress this enough, if you have Grievous Wounds applied to her, she will not regain as much health from her ultimate, which is a big part of what makes it so strong. Yes, it hurts, but if you already had the advantage, you can still put her down.

Cassiopeia (no dunks for you), (a skilled) Darius, (a skilled) Olaf, Teemo, Nasus (in terms of being even with her, she doesn't get fed, nor do you), Rumble (blaze that Spirit away), Yasuo (too mobile), Karma (kite for the win), Ryze (contain and destroy), Quinn (poke for days; BUT you need to have global presence), Tryndamere, Kayle, AZIR (a good Azir Top destroys her), Pantheon.

Edit: Gnar. Use your mobility to evade her E / Get out of E range before she can damage the spirit. Poke with your Q/W combo for days. When she's low and/or has missed her E engage with Mega Gnar.

I play Illaoi top a fair amount and I can think of a few champs that consistently screw me.

Vlad is hell. He can outpoke and outsustain. I can usually survive him for the first few levels, but after that, nah.

Renekton is just annoyingly bursty. He hurts more than I do and that stun is really nasty to play against.

And though I've not yet played against either one myself yet, it is also my understanding that Nasus and Kennen are pretty hard counters too.

Hope it helps!

Nasus isn't a counter in the sense that he can duel her. He's a counter in that he can farm hilariously well against illaoi and outscale her.

champions that specifically counter her. is nasus. she makes stacking a whole lot easier. go ahead. I want her to throw Es at me as much as possible. 2/3 easy stacks every time

You can't counter her. She is OP freelo. The only counter is having low ping.

If your ping < 100 ms, she can't touch you. If your ping > 100 ms, you can't touch her.

As a level 5 Illaoi player, literally anything ranged will beat her. Graves, Quinn, and those jerks who take Kindred top have all made me regret picking Illaoi blind. She excells at destroying melee champions, which the only one she actually loses to that i can think of often is Darius, because ya'know, its Darius. Jayce is probably the only ranged(ish) champion that doesn't work too well.

Quepha1 votes

Anything with ranged auto attacks will have a much easier time keeping her tentacles under control. Swain, Vlad, Teemo, Quinn, Kennen.

In general just hide behind minions and be ready to dodge her Q's. If she manages to pull you but she isn't in range of one of her passive tentacles then you might be able to actually fight her or just let her beat on your spirit with her auto attacks since then she shouldn't deal enough damage to curse you. If she does pull your spirit within tentacle range then you want to back off and take the curse early to minimize the damage she'll deal to you with slams.

When cursed you need to watch for the tentacle spawns and be ready to dodge. Don't bother killing tentacles while cursed anymore, it doesn't shorten the curse and it actually will cause you to need to dodge more tentacle slams since the spawn cooldown is lower than the slam cooldown and tentacles always slam on spawn. You're best off just standing under a tentacle that just slammed to prevent more spawns (unless Illaoi is close enough to hop on you and trigger another slam).

In general your goal is simply to not feed her and get as much cs as possible while doing it. That sounds OP but pretty much all juggernauts depend on getting fed a lead so they can get hypertanky for team fights, otherwise it's just way too easy to kite them.

Anyone with high mobility or range can shut Illaoi down. Illaoi functions similar to Darius in that the landing phase is what she lives for and is her strongest point. Beating her there makes her useless later, just like a Darius.

High mobility: Yasuo, Riven, Irelia, Fiora Ranged: Kennen, Graves, Quinn, Swain, Vladimir, Gnar

Darius can also give her a run for her money if you play it well.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Well Darius rework made him much better outside lane now that he can viably build tank and mop up teamfights off a single kill. If you're talking about old Darius I 100% agree that's what Illaoi is now.

l Helios l1 votes

I'll agree it's made it better for him, but it's still highly dependent on a reset that his team has to be willing to give.

Just kite her for enternity with your W, poke with Q, use your E and "outplay" her and then just combo her when mega.

I main Gnar, and this is actually how powerful he is; I'm trash talking my main

Not all I said. I said a general lack of mobility and extreme squishiness (a point which you have yet to address). Graves isn't squishy so he's an aberration of the ADC top lane.

So for someone to go top they can't be squishy???

If that is your reasoning there is a major flaw.....Kennen.

It is a problem because vayne's tumble and condemn are nowhere near enough to save her from a gank from most junglers. There's a reason why tanky ass champions go top lane to brawl it out. They're the only ones that can generally survive a top lane gank. Not to mention the fact that you're robbing your team of a tank in teamfights.

and ADCs hardcounter those champions, it seems you are just reading something someone said and are repeating it, but regardless, those ADCs do have mobility and pose a real problem for melee tops, try going something like Vayne against something like Singed.

Tychusfindlay9191 votes

Darius Can move while activating his Qs.

His heal is a lot more reliable since he can dodge illaoi's Q while getting his own Q off which heals more, applies a bleed stack, and deals great damage.

He has a pull to get her out of her comfort zone (near a lot of tentacles)

His ult can execute her before she wants to use her ult.

Early game, he can essentially ignore a soul pull since he can simply go in and fight her at that point.

He's one of the few champions who Illaoi can't stat check since he also has incredibly high base stats.

Vladimir is very good against Illaoi, he can harass her, destroy her tentacles from a distance, outsustain her, use his pool to avoid being hit by her E, and use his pool to avoid damage from Illaoi's ult.

The most common is braindead no skill champs like Malphite who just stacks armor and Illaoi does literally 0 damage. Protip:hide behind minions to not get hit by her E,and when she ults, just gtfo
