In S2 there was no safe zone like division 5 that allowed you to tank your MMR and ruin other people's games with no consequences (being a gatekeeper). And since there was no safe zone there was no need in arbitrary promo series.
In S2 there was no lowest rank possible that would cover the infinite MMR range (Bronze V). You could go below Bronze into the unranked tier and go as low as negative elo.
In S2 since your rank was equal to your Elo (MMR), there was no confusion about placement matches, because you'd get placed based on your previous rank.
In S2 you wouldn't get matched with Plat players in Silver because if someone has shit MMR, he would never stay in Plat.
