W refreshes it and R applies it, too

Amumu becoming strong contender for magic damage team comps? Very interesting buff, gives him some interesting synergy with AP carries

I was going to say Amumu with item 3001 would be nasty with an ally Veigar, but Amumu and Orianna is already a tried and true wombo combo. And now Orianna will be doing 10% more damage to everyone he touches..

Or just full AP Amumu doing the nukes by himself

Well now it's OBVIOUS they're fucking with us.

RavenMagus11 votes

Well that's kind of what his passive does already. Lowered magic resist might as well be the same as dealing extra true damage. Except his R doesn't apply it.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

exactly, i'm really confused by why they would bother with this non-change.

RavenMagus5 votes

There's some benefits to it I can see. Putting it on his R as well means he actually provides it in a teamfight and not just a 1v1 duel. Making it % extra true damage instead of -MR also gives it an easier curve of expected damage (always 10% more) rather than "lots more if you're a squishy, nothing really if you're a tank".

They took this path with Abyssal already, so it's not actually too surprising they're doing it for amumu too.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

But aren't tanks supposed to be able to take damage?

RavenMagus2 votes

that's not really the point here though.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

But isn't that the effect of the change? Because it seems like removing MR shred for true damage would only make sure that tanks take more damage while squishies take less.

RavenMagus2 votes

That is one thing that would happen, yes. The damage amplification would affect squishies less than it does now, and it might affect tanks more.

Personally, I think that's fine. Squishies are already blowing up too fast, and tanks will still be able to tank damage. This isn't going to be a supreme tank shredding ability.

Keevalroy3 votes

You're right, but with Riot's recent(ish) hard-on for true damage being shoved into kits where it arguably doesn't belong, this is just adding fuel to the fire. And just because it's not an inferno yet, doesn't mean it's not a concern, and shouldn't be neglected as a minor nuisance while Riot slowly adds to it over time.

With tank update on the way, true damage would be beneficial against the tanks and the new items they're supposedly getting, but there's a such thing as "too much." With the new releases and reworks adding to the true damage, percent damage, and penetration, I'd argue we already hit that point a while ago, and need to backwards and remove or at the very least reduce these effects on certain champions.

RavenMagus1 votes

People are jumping at the very mention of "true damage."

Honestly, the concept of true damage itself is perfectly fine. Just like the concept of % health is perfectly fine. It allows a kit to have damage that can threaten tanks without blowing squishies up instantly (even more than they're all being blown up, anyways). Of course, the two probably shouldn't be combined so much.

That being said, looking at this change and saying it's stupidity for "introducing more true damage" is actually just silly. From what it looks like, it's 10% of the damage being dealt, likely post-mitigation - so if you're not taking much damage in the first place (due to being a tank or something), then that all-mighty true damage is actually just 10% of not much.

Keevalroy1 votes

What I'm saying is that isolating one kit at a time with true damage and/or defensive reduction doesn't seem that impactful from a balance perspective, but when you start adding more champions with these kit qualities to a roster with other members being updated to include them as well, and including those who had them right out of the gate, eventually it's going to be a huge game health issue, and in my opinion, Riot needs to dial the hell back on some of these updates and examine what truly needs to go into a kit rather than throwing up their arms going: "hey let's add true damage to this kit because lawl why not?"

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I guess it depends on the tuning. It could be tuned so it deals comparable damage to tanks vs live while squishies take less damage. Or it could be so that it deals the same damage to squishies while tanks get shredded. Or of course somewhere in between. Either way the same thing could have been accomplished by adjusting his base damages and the MR shred on his passive without converting it to true damage.

My point is that they didn't actually add any tuning levers that didn't already exist because the number of degrees of freedom in the equations hasn't changed.

His ult now applying the passive does change things a little bit, but that could have been done with MR shred or true damage anyway.

RavenMagus1 votes

His ult now applying the passive does change things a little bit, but that could have been done with MR shred or true damage anyway.

Yeah, that's the main change here.

The true damage itself is, from what it looks like, is just 10% of incoming damage. So if you're a tank and you're not taking much, then you get 10% more of not much. If you're a squishy, you get 10% more of a lot.

I feel like the point wasn't to add or remove levers or anything, just to follow the same paradigm that Abyssal did (magic amp instead of MR shred). I don't think this is supposed to be a huge change at all.

Dolasaur1 votes

It gives some clarity that "I'm doing this extra damage because of Amumu's passive" that wasn't there before. It also makes whether or not you have applied the passive more visible, which is a buff to lower MMR players that might not have been considering it before at all.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I'm not sure how this change does anything for clarity. "I'm doing this extra damage because of Amumu's passive" can be said if its magic damage or true damage.

Dolasaur1 votes

You're some mage like Xerath. You cast a spell. It does 485 magic damage. Did it do 485 damage before? If you don't know, then you can't say if it's Amumu's contribution. If it didn't do 485 damage before, there could still be other things- did someone with Abyssal Scepter enter/leave the area? Did Windspeaker's Blessing wear off/start applying? What if some combination of the three happens?

If you cast the spell and it does 441 magic damage and 44 true damage, it would be relatively clear that Amumu's passive helped you do 44 damage.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

That's just game knowledge, if it does 44 true damage or 44 extra magic damage post mitigation doesn't change anything but if they want to make it clearer then why not just say the spell did 441 damage while amumu did the 44 extra damage? That way your spell does the same damage regardless and the extra damage is dealt by amumu who should be credited with that extra damage anyway because it was caused by his passive.

This kind of damage attribution is important to do right if we are ever going to get a proper death reacap anyway.

Dolasaur1 votes

Most clarity is game knowledge. Saying something is "just" game knowledge isn't a strong argument either way. I mean, I'm personally happy that Morgana's shield has purple health bars in addition to having the visual cue, that the Teleport sound speeds up as it nears completion, and that tool tips exist.

why not just say the spell did 441 damage while amumu did the 44 extra damage?

General bonus damage application, from Janna shield to Vlad ult to Zeke's Herald activation, generally attribute damage to the direct attacker rather than the enhancer. There might be a few exceptions for death recap (like maybe Lulu and Leona passives?). But supplementary damage getting directly attributed to the enhancer would result in a nontrivial change in expectations for who gets credit for a kill.

Note that I'm not arguing for or against this change happening. I was simply answering your implicit question about this being a non-change.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

General bonus damage application, from Janna shield to Vlad ult to Zeke's Herald activation, generally attribute damage to the direct attacker rather than the enhancer.

My point on this btw is that the damage in all these cases should be attributed to the enchanter. That would make the damage attribution more honest and would highlight the contribution of these playstyles.

But supplementary damage getting directly attributed to the enhancer would result in a nontrivial change in expectations for who gets credit for a kill.

Not necessarily, damage dealt could be attributed to the enchanter without the kill credit going to them, the same way that kalista passive interacts where the support does the damage to the minion but kalista gets the credit for the last hit.

Keevalroy2 votes

Nah, if this was gonna be an April fools gag, it would be more obvious like the ult being global and applying a "sad" debuff, where "sad" champions can't attack him because of how sorry they feel for him. As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm pretty sure the balance team is back to doing crack during their meetings again.

But if these patch notes are jokes, (unlikely) then they made them believable enough to fall for the trick, and good on them...but uhhh...yeah...they look too real.

doodlebob6667 votes

before people get to hyped this isn't that massive a change, since he was effectively making squishies take true damage from magic damage by reducing their mr by 25, alot only have 30 mr that never grows so they were going to take true damage from any mage with sorc boots or even without if they didn't build mr. This does help him against tanks though, and does make him the fourth champ with percent max health true damage

Narsicus2 votes

Pretty much this.

It is looking like the old passive (flat 15-25 magic resist reduction) will be stronger when the opponent's MR is LOWER than about 90-150 (as it scales throughout the game) while the new flat 10% boost will be stronger when the opponent's MR is HIGHER than those values.

So it is generally going to be weaker on squishies but stronger when the opponents are stacking MR.

The W and R changes are straight buffs though, allowing Amumu to keep us his passive on multiple people when he normally would be hard pressed to do so.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

Vayne, Fiora, Garen, and now Amumu, right? Right. Had to check.

doodlebob6661 votes

forgot about garen was thinking of camille,

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

camille has %Max HP magic damage on her ult and % Her AD true damage on her Q, but i don't think she has % Max HP true damage. Did i misread the wiki or something?

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

Because of the way Camille's Q works, she can get 4% max HP true damage on her second Q by buying Bloodrazor. She doesn't get any innately, though.

doodlebob6661 votes

doesn't the percent health damage from her ult get converted?

edit: just tested apparently not

Barely. .3% per sec true dmg isn't even noticeable.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

0.3% per sec?

  1. where are you getting that number from?

  2. His passive would be converting a % of all magic damage dealt into true damage, which would give other magic damage dealing champs on his team true damage as well.

hi can u read

W- 10% of 3% is .3%

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I'm responding so clearly i can read, but nowhere did anyone bring up 3% so i have no idea to what you are referring. 10% conversion to true damage is his new passive. Is the 3% supposed to represent his %MAX HP damage on his w? Because his W scales through the game up to 3% from 1%, and it also has an extra 1% per 100AP so you're working off some assumptions on level/W rank/order of abilities maxed and AP purchased which you never stated. No need to be insulting.

"hes the fourth % max hp true damage champion"

His W is %max hp magic damage His passive amplifies magic dmg to true damage where else would amumu get % maxhp dmg???

=percent max hp true damage

And idk why you even care about amount of ap/skill level this is a discussion about his % max hp true damage. No one is mentioning how much ap he has lol... I'm not gonna go dig up some random ass build with runes and masteries and calculate an unrealistic amount of stats

the guy said %max hp true damage, and amumu does .3% per second. why go any further?

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

w is going to be maxed second anyway so i dont get your point there about ability levels and order

That's an assumption, that may or may not hold up with the changes, only time will tell. It also is discussing an amumu which is at least level 13 to have their second ability maxed which you didn't mention at all.

amumu will only get 150 ap max with liandrys and rylais if he wants to buy ap anyway so that's irrelevant

That's another 1.5% max HP damage on W which takes it from 3% to 4.5%, which is a pretty big deal. Give any ability a 1.5x damage modifier and you'd notice pretty quickly.... Giving an ability an extra 50% damage is not irrelevant by any means.

You silently assumed that amumu was maxing W second he was level 13 to have it maxed has 150 AP which you didn't include in your calculation assumed liandries in his build without stating so neglected liandries 4% MAX HP damage/ despite later saying he would have it

These aren't bad assumptions for the most part but you're pulling them from nowhere in particular, and they are contradictory in some cases.

With that setup he gets 10% ( 3%/sec + 1.5%/sec + 4%/3sec) = 0.583 % max HP true damage per second.

So you can understand why i didn't understand where 0.3% came from because it doesn't correspond to anything meaningful.

??? yeah next thing u know i'm gonna assume he has 5 deathcaps does 10% max hp per second.

  1. He said he did max hp % true damage. Amumu is a tank. He doesn't build liandrys or rylais 99% of the time. So he only has the base damage to work from.

That's like me saying sejuani does a lot of %max hp magic damage, someone replying "oh but its only 8%" Then your smart ass comes and says "but sejuani can build deathcaps and void staffs and do 20% xDDD how do u know shes building tank!!!"

If u didnt understand where the .3% came from, you either didn't know the base damage of amumu's W, or you were too ignorant to realize it was his W in the first place. I'm thinking it's the ignorance part because u said this: "2) His passive would be converting a % of all magic damage dealt into true damage, which would give other magic damage dealing champs on his team true damage as well." Which had nothing to do with max% hp true dmg.

  1. Why wouldn't you assume it was max rank? You want me to assume it's level 1? The guy I quoted said it helps him against tanks. Amumu isn't going to be fighting a tank early game anyway... Also, he maxes W second 99% of the time.

He can nearly 100-0 a squishy with the normal tank build, dude.

You forgot Sunfires too, that thing is HUGE.

Sire Hippington8 votes

You guys know that he had a passive already? The up to 30 mr shred probably are more effective at killing squishys tham 10% damage increase. The bigger deal abput that buff will be that his ult applies it and W refreshes it, so you can easily keep it up on multiple opponents in a teamfight.

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

Sure, but it absolutely destroys tanks. When it says 10% bonus true damage, it means premitigation.

Sire Hippington2 votes

I was mostly reffering to your ' Amumu can easily solo kill a squishy chain ccing him. ' statement, as he already does that with ap-ish builts, and probably better so than after the change.

And i wouldn't be so sure about it beeing premitigation, might work like abyssal instead
