So, about those Marksmen subclasses.

I, like most people, feel like marksmen definitely shouldn't just be clumped together as one subclass. Here are my suggestion for potential subclasses:

Rangers

Rangers are often spell focused marksmen who sacrifise range for burst and situational but powerful defensive tools, such as mobility. They are less team reliant than other marksmen, but often require riskier positioning to do their maximum damage output.

  • Corki
  • Draven
  • Ezreal
  • Kalista
  • Kindred
  • Lucian
  • Sivir
  • Vayne
  • Xayah

Artillery: Marksman Edition (Shitty name, but people kept getting hung up on the name "Hypercarry" and missing the point)

Artilleries are long range marksmen, specialising in high sustained damage from the backline. They are often the most threatening damage dealer on their team, but are among the most team reliant characters in the game due to their frailty and limited (or complete lack of) defensive tools.

  • Jinx
  • Kog'Maw
  • Tristana
  • Twitch

Snipers

Snipers preffer staying in the outskirts of fights, dealing damage in long range bursts while supporting their allies with more utility based abilities in between. What they lack in raw DPS and mobility in comparison to other marksmen, they make up for with crowd controll and long range pick potential.

  • Ashe
  • Caitlyn
  • Jhin
  • Varus

Unique Marksmen

  • Graves
  • Miss Fortune
  • Quinn
  • Teemo
  • Urgot

Vayne isn't that spell focused.

The problem is a lot of them work into different catagorys too.

Ashe, Varus, Jhin and Sivir all have utility.

Xayah has a AS steroid that could make her a hyper carry but also uses Spells. Corki and EZ also function similar to a AD Mage. I'd catogorize Vayne as a Hyper Carry.

Twitch, Vayne, and Teemo also function similar to assassins.

Xayah, Sivir, Vayne, Teemo are hyper marksmen as well. The thing is you want games to be LESS complicated and remove the fat as much as possible, you don't make things more complicated for players. We reached a point in gaming that the question is "what can I remove" not "what can I add"

I like your suggestion of subclasses but not sure about tristana fitting in Artillery, aah ok endgame maybe because of her AA long range, but Corky would fit artillery aswell. ok it's based on his ability that I understand but playstyle of all other rangers share pretty much the same except for Corky who play more like twitch and tristana. MF would fit in artillery aswell.

Grave and Urgot would fit more as ranger, no? ... all short range and rely on mobility/positionning and abilities.

maybe instead of Sniper might call it Trapper or Hunter, that would less restrict to range but more about the ability to deal damage while staying out harm from target, coming out of nowhere to deal damage. they allow a more tigh control of their territory, with trap and map awarness tools, aswell as long range damage tools. Teemo would fit in it then... even if not long range, he rely on trap like caitlyn and Jhin, and his stealth, W and Q allow to get Out of fight. and prolly Quinn would fit into hit too, still not sure about her.

I feel the Ranger might be split into 2 differents subclasses... one with ezreal, lucian, vayne, draven, kalista, kindred, (being more single target nuke ranger): "Sharpshooter"

and the other with grave, sivir, urgot, xayah (being more AoE rangers that spray all over the enemies.): "Spray Shooter"

think about the distinction about kalista and xayah, in a sense they are pretty alike, but kalista is more about mobility while xayah is more about AoE like sivir.

NB subclasses are category names used to define the basic, kit concept gameplay that share champions of the same classes; of course some champions can be build or play sometime like another classes of subclasses. but the prime goal of those categorisation is to translate as many information that are commun about that champion to players that don't know that champion, after we can argue that tristana can be an assassin or urgot an artillerist, that's just because category are plaint of a broad pictures and champions sometime are somehow in a field close to another subclass or class. it doesn't change the fact that the line between classes and subclasses and the stats/kit of a champion can clearly be define in main category that would allow a more easy understanding.

I agree with the OP that Range for a Marksman IS foundamental in this, aswell as mobility, abilities CD dependent orientated, AoE potential is also.

If mobility and range is so is the map awarness/control is something that categorize champs kit aswell.
