Suggestion for a new Galio passive

Destínum··51 votes·4,230 views

Even Riot agrees that Galio doesn't really have a passive atm (his abilities should just scale with MR instead). Here's my suggestion for a new one:

Eternal Guardian

Damaging an enemy champion causes a percentage of all damage they deal to allied champions within a few seconds to be taken by Galio instead in the form of magic damage.

Reasons why I think this would be a fitting passive for Galio:

  • It improves his fantasy as a guardian.
  • It forces him to interact with his opponents in order to utilize it.
  • It rewards him for hitting several opponents with his spells.
  • It gives his basic attacks some power, which they definitely should have on an immobile melee champion.
  • It rewards him even further for stacking MR since the damage he takes is always magic damage (and he really need to be more rewarded for it in this AD-heavy game).

Thoughts?

Edit: I'm not saying a new passive is all Galio needs, but I think it would be the hardest part of his kit to figure out. The rest can probably go with just minor changes. And if it wasn't clear enough, his abilities would of course be made to scale with MR if they changed his passive.

Im assuming the lack of people commenting has to do with the low number of people (like me) who don't know what his current passive is lel.

Sounds like a reasonable change

Galio gains bonus ability power equal to 50% of his total magic resistance.

His passive is so goooooooood though!

I'm not entirely sure about this exact passive (it doesn't sound like it would be easily visible or immediately understandable), but I agree that Galio 's fantasy should be that of a magic-eater. He definitely should be soaking up damage for his team and feeling strong for it. He might need a few changes besides a new passive (his Runic Bulwark is definitely powerful, but doesn't have the same visible impact as, say, a proper health shield or straightforward healing/regen), but the effect you're suggesting is the direction in which Riot should take Galio.

KiwiTheTORT4 votes

They really should show a particle of some kind going from the shielded person to Galio so you can see he is being healed on hit. Nobody on your team who hasn't played Galio will ever know what his shield does at the moment.

LuckyReden2 votes

It could be kinda like the look of thornmail except instead of from enemies, it could be from allies

SMA Odyssey2 votes

I wouldn't change his W at all, I find it to be incredibly strong and it makes me feel amazing when I throw it on and my opponents get confused as to why they're healing me with each hit hahaha. I like the way it works, and the MR/armor buff with it is very good.

Interesting but he needs some polishing on his abilities as well and they could give them direct magic resist => dmg scaling like Malphite E has from armor.

As one of the few people that currently play galio I have to say, This would not be helpful to Galio at all Galio's current problem is that he's stuck halfway between a Mage/support and a Tank. He needs a E that presses him into tank or ult that presses him into Mage/support. Your passive wouldn't help push him either way and would also force him into a duo lane, pigeonholing him into support when he is currently able to mid, top and support; farther decreasing his viability. In short, No Please

If he keeps his MR scaling, I could see that working It'd actually give him a reason to AA ever

Personally, I love Galio's passive. I think it defines him and it's one of the biggest things which attracts me to him. I enjoy being able to counter-pick AP heavy comps.

In my opinion, Galio's only real issue is that his ult is so easy to interrupt. If it wasn't so easy to interrupt, he'd be much stronger. It just feels like it frequently gets interrupted by things that people weren't even intending to use to interrupt it. Once a battle starts, frequently so much CC gets thrown around that it is almost hard NOT to interrupt Galio's ult. I saw a post on here noting that the trend seems to be to give more CC abilities in the form of knockups and other minor CC with short durations. The effect for Galio is that there are just more and more champions who can interrupt his ult.

junglerboy163 votes

these changes wouldn't remove his current passive, just reword it and give him an additional passive.

Flemman2 votes

a good change will be to rework what interrupt his ult (reduce to rare thing like fear/blind/silence)

terkmc3 votes

Since Galio is susposed to be Sion rival, why not give him something similar. "Eternal Guardian: After Galio dies, he remain on the field as a statue for 10 second, reducing damage taken by allies in a radius around him by 20%"

So a team with Galio dead and Mao will result in 40% Damage reduction. You don't need a tank at that point, so Mao and Galio can go straight Damage.

I think magic resist may be the one thing that an (offensive) ability doesn't scale off of yet! Yes please at least get rid of his old passive and give him some uniqueness!

Eph2893 votes

Galio's biggest problem is that his ult is too fickle. Make him immune to displacement (thematically appropriate for a Gargoyle anchored to the ground) and maybe on-hit CCs like Bear Stance and he'd be a lot more viable.

I don't really like it. Not saying Galio isn't one to be a support but for some odd reason, he is a Tank/Fighter so I'm not sure this would go well with his tanky side. If I were to even change the passive, it wouldn't be to get rid of MR bonus but to change it up a bit.

For every assist, Galio gains 4/6/8 bonus AP (4/6/8 x number of assists). And we keep the original MR bonus.

That way, its either hard for (yet do-able if jungle ganks) mid lane and fun for support.

SouL1ess4 votes

One property of Tank is also disruption capability. For decreasing the opponent's damage done, you effectively lower the threat of that person to your team members, which is what a tank without hard CC on a basic ability would want to do.

I think the suggested passive is fine, and Riot can move his MR scaling to his abilities instead.

Rew7113 votes

Its actually terrible for Galio. The fact that he takes some of the damage would mean many bad things. Mainly these 2:

  1. Galio will have to build mainly Health. (The dude is a guardian but common, this passive is dumb.) The only compensation is if he keeps his W. And even that is risky and lasts only so long. And needs AP incase of critical attacks.

  2. Easier kills. Galio might just as well become the target. And if not, he still collects damage that may or may not be idiotic.

Unless this comes with a bonus in armor and magic resist for Galio, this is pretty much not thought out. Sounds good for other players but definitely not for Galio.

Galio is a "guardian" but isn't that what Tanks are? He was suppose to be the champion that can go up against Ryze, Vel'Koz, and other OP AP champions.

If anyone should have this, it should be Braum. He has plenty of armor and health to spare.

I'm not too sure the scaling will be fair - look at Kassadin's scalings for his ultimate - as no other champions scalings come out as fair.

I'm also sick and tired of you people thinking of changing champions you don't know how to work. Why not go off the meta with the champions? Galio is a fun middle laner and a nice top laner.

(Sorry if any of this sounds rude.)

SouL1ess2 votes

OP specified that any damage redirected to Galio will be the form of magic damage. So you don't need to build armor explicitly to lower damage done to yourself. Even redirecting 10% of the damage done to himself would be significant, especially against assassins.

Also, if you are afraid of taking too much damage, you can put Bulwark on yourself even if you are not focused, and the heal will still go off because you are taking damage from a redirected source, effectively healing you.

If Galio becomes the main focus then it's even better: he still has an ult to AoE taunt and take reduced damage, he still has Bulwark to increase his offensive AND defensive capabilities at the same time, and even as a mage he is quite durable. Focusing Galio also opens up the rest of your team for dealing damage to enemies.

full MR galios incoming.

Saianna4 votes

Galios always were full MR..

Chaotic Reks2 votes

where? i always see somewhat MR and almost always full AP.

Saianna2 votes

He gets Ap from building MR. So more MR you have, the bigger is your Ap number :)

Chaotic Reks1 votes

I understand that. But most of the galios i see build full AP but have a little amount of MR

Cindikle2 votes

I like the idea. But not if he's getting the scaling built into his kit.

Even just stacking BV and SV, even though their passives don't stack, would give him a ton of damage and tankiness.

Maybe if the passive got reversed a bit.

"Dealing magic damage to a champion increases Armor and MR by x% for 4 seconds. Max bonus armor/MR is capped at 6+levelx3. Which may be too much as well. But he'll probably get a case of the "lower base stats" for a passive like this.

Now he gets a tank steroid instead of a damage steroid. This doesn't necessarily become stronger or weaker if he builds damage or tanky. He always has his base damage. And if he goes damage it wont make him a super damage tank because of the cap.

Problem with Ryze is that he gets to build tanky and still deal massive damage. I like the concept. But he's been a battle of balance for Riot for a long time now. Galio gets away with it because he only really gains power vs one type. Rammus also gains a bit of this.

The passive I'd really like to see, but would probably never happen.

"Galio's bonus Armor and MR double while not moving."

This adds a lot of points into what he can do. And he's a gargoyle after all. This could also take place of the damage reduction in his ult. As this would overall be a nerf in that regard. He could keep his MR->AP scaling in his abilities.

Alëk2 votes

i like it. It would definitely make him much stronger, and more viable for all comps.

Akeito2 votes

Galio base damage is god damn high already...

Grouchy Poro2 votes

I think this passive could work well as his new w or something to give it a more meaningful, and visible impact when used on an ally. Then when he uses it on himself it can heal him like before. One of those feel good moments for me as Galio late game is just going into the jungle and punching a jungle camp with my w up to get a fat heal after a teamfight. Same thing works for teemo shrooms; find one and laugh as you're hp is restored with every poison tick.

Junkο2 votes

One problem would be that with his ultimate and a pure MR build and his W he would be single handedly win most teamfights.

Viability (passive): Galio now becomes viable

junglerboy164 votes

Galio's problem isn't that he is unviable, he is actually quite strong. His problem is that he is boring.

SMA Odyssey2 votes

No, actually, his problem is that he has no mobility and is a magic damage tank in a highly mobile AD meta. Yes, he's very strong, but he needs to gain mobility to ever be viable. No one likes having to wait every 5 minutes to be able to flash ult.

junglerboy162 votes

Fair enough, he is more of a mage counter pick champion, and I agree he isn't that good in the mobility meta, maybe if they gave his ult a little dash leading into the channel he would fare better. I still would have to say that mobility issues aside, he Is actually quite strong and his real issue is still that he is just not that interesting or fun to play. He certainly isn't amazing right now, but just because mages are less popular mid doesn't mean he is weak. He is sort of like an invisible defense for your team. His ult is AMAZING at peeling, but particularly weak for engaging. He is not an initiator like Malphite or Amumu, he is a defensive protector who takes the enemy team's damage and redirects it away from carries (Which actually fits his theme as a guardian.

Zetra131 votes

I propose a passive that makes him build AP to gain MR. So literally reverse the passives. Why? As a mage in mid lane, he becomes an anti magic mage, shrugging off AP damage while dealing high damage himself. On the other end, you also now have reason to build Health based AP items. This increases his tanky abilites while still letting him scale. There are not enough viable MR items to use for his current passive, but i think like 25% AP into MR would work. What do you all think?

Destínum4 votes

The intention with Galio is to get some offensive power for building defensively, this would do the opposite. He's a tank primarilly, not a mage.

Arch Sight1 votes

Even Riot agrees that Galio doesn't really have a passive atm (his abilities should just scale with MR instead).

What? when? how?

Galio's passive give's him bonus 50% AP off of how much magic resist he has. This Passive is awesome on Galio because it's the main reason why he get's picked against heavy ability power team comps. It's a good advantage due to League of legends Item's giving MR and another stat like more AP, or Mana regen, etc. He can build tanky first and remain a threat at the same time vs mages. How is this not a great passive to have for a tank/bruiser?

Is Riot going to nerf Galio now to make people stop playing this old champion whenever they see a magic dealing team? They're policy of nerfing champions to force player's to get new one's isn't a good idea when those player's are parting with something they enjoyed playing for so long. Look at what they did to Shen. He's too scared to come out of champion select vs Zed.

Did they destroy his passive with a inconsiderate change?

He's post to build MR and get AP at the same time to make him a bruiser or tank that counter's heavy ability power comps or go thornmail to counter heavy attack speed comps. His abilities don't even need a rework because they are great teamwork abilities that force the other teams deck towards Galio.

Bruisers are not glass cannons, Galio is made to last longer than other champions while dishing out his own form of dps/burst damage hybride style while waiting for the other team to use up their counter's before Galio does his Ult.

Destínum3 votes

The plan is to give all his abilities MR scaling and give him a new passive. Effectively, the old passive will stay while also giving him a new one.

junglerboy162 votes

All they were saying is that his passive which gives him ap for building tanky has the same effect as saying his abilities scale with 50% of his MR, a la Malphite's E. They were saying that this change would make Galio identical to how he functions now, but also make room for an even better passive.

Flemman2 votes

The only problem I see with transfering the passive to the ability is that, if they want to enforce a way to play galio by putting a "must upgrade first" ability, they gonna nerf the scale on the 3 other to the bottom (like with cassiopeia twin fang), letting you with a "only one way to be played" champ :s (and we all know nich player don't want that >-

junglerboy162 votes

No, ALL of his abilities would scale with MR, like how Ryze scales with mana. I just used Malphite as an example of a similar type of character (Utility damage tank).

Flemman2 votes

yeah, but then rito has the opportunity tho change ratio, why would they keep 50% everywhere

junglerboy162 votes

Oh, I get what you mean. Yes, they would probably change his ratios around for each ability a bit if that is what they wanted, but having an ability that is stronger to level up 1st is not a bad thing. Being able to max out any of the three first and doing ok with each is fine, but sometimes, having a clear spell to max first can be better. If they did make it like that, ideally they would make it so that it is more situational, i.e. maxing Q first is best against X type of champions, and W is best for Y etc. I agree that what they did to Cassiopeia is atrocious, but hopefully Riot won't make that mistake again (Hint: Riot, you shouldn't mess up like that again, can't say it much more clearly than that).

SuperSourCat1 votes

The problem with this passive is that Galio early game would be squishy even for a tank/support/mage, because then he is soaking up the damage received in a team fight. Therefore Galio has to build straight magic resistance the whole game in order to take place in team fights and then he has no damage output.

Tuss2 votes

His abilities would still have magic resistance scaling, as the OP explained, so he'd still be getting damage for building magic resistance.

Arch Sight1 votes

that's just the same as before...

Build magic resistance and get bonus AP from passive which his abilities build off of. Switching it around is actually going to nerf galio when he build's his items. Most items have a lower amount of magic resist than Ability Power. Items with magic resist and AP, have more AP to count to his abilities. There isn't any items that build 100 magic resist.

Bulwark adds bonus magic resist too boost his passive which riot will tell you that's part of his smite combo to do more damage.

Galio is a champion that has been balanced a long time ago with Riot's items. That synergy with each item he builds is going to be messed up if he suddenly has to build MR only for his abilities to make up for the amount of AP he's loosing from not having his abilities scale with it anymore.

Destínum2 votes

His scaling with items would be literally the same as before. I don't see the issue to be honest.
