Why nobody wants to play support?

YumaS2Astral··3 votes·13,155 views

After reading all those threads with people complaining about getting support almost every time no matter if they put Support as a primary or secondary role on the new Champion Select...

I've realized that most people don't even want to play support. And this maybe is the reason why the above situation is happening. I would like to know other player's opinions on why most people don't want to go support.

I personally dislike playing support because it is the role that you rely the most on your team to carry. Sure, you are there protecting your ADC and allowing him to scale into late game, but you are rarely making an impact by yourself. In addition, playing support is boring for me, since you are forced to sit there and not farm at all. Lastly, sometimes there are toxic ADCs who blame you for everything that is happening and start to flame. That's why I like to solo lane more, I prefer to do all things by myself (farming, etc).

Alot of people don't like supporting because they often feel they have no carry potential, and they feel less useful if the game starts going bad. Often they are just looked at as the primary warder that is suppose to keep the adc alive and that sounds pretty boring to a lot of people.

What people don't understand is the impact a good support can have on a game. A good support won't just keep the adc alive and help them get kills. They will apply constant pressure on the opposing adc forcing them to miss cs and slowly fall behind. They help maintain vision across the map and a high degree of awareness alerting all players to potential dangers. The amount of vision that a support can provide can allow the team to avoid ganks and set up plays that literally win the game.

Another thing is that the support is not just the adc's babysitter, good supports will choose the correct times to roam and assist other lanes. Often times a good support will help a jungle invade in jungle to set up vision, gank, or steal buffs. In team fights there are a lot of supports that have the abilities to initiate and and disrupt teams. And at the end of it all I am sure all of us can remember the times where we were saved last min by a lantern, shield, or heal. We have all had that support who burned a flash just to block that caitlyn headshot that would have given her shutdown gold, or shielded you rather then trying to protect themselves from karthus' reckoning.

In my opinion Support is a role that might not be as glamorous but is just as important as any other role on the team. The sign of a good support is one that has few kills, no deaths, high kill participation, most wards placed and destroyed, and an adc that is fed beyond belief. Personally winning the game is what I care about, I don't need a spotlight of being a carry, and I get just as much enjoyment out of helping my teammates win the game.

Why hello fellow support main.

I've been starting out at bronze/silver level, and focusing on support. The worst part is how, almost like a reflex, support gets blamed for everything.

True story, I needed to back, we had just pushed the wave beyond river, everything was warded, and I say in chat, "I'm backing [Ashe], be careful" Within 10 seconds of backing, Ashe is dead and has the audacity to say, "where was my support there?" The answer was: I was backing like I just told you 17 seconds ago.

It is easy and lame to blame your support when you lose, but everyone does it.

The only support in League that feels like more than just a ward/healbot is Thresh. Shit like Annie and Zyra don't count because they're midlaners that are just taken bot instead.

Your bad a support is the backbone of the team if you think you do nothing then you are sorely mistaken

I don't think that I do nothing. I just said that as a support I don't feel that I am making an impact as much as if I were to go on a solo lane. Especially because even if I do something that was impressive or game changing, someone else is praised instead of me.

People will recognize a good support when they see one. Often times people are focusing on their lane and only see who is getting the kills. I find that it is actually pretty rare that people don't compliment a good play when they see one.

The midlaner and jungler is the backbone of the team. Supports can be useless and you can still win. You can't win with a useless midlaner/jungler. People hate supporting because you play like a babysitter. You're there to help others, and not urself. Which is what most people hate.

Supports are one of the biggest contributors to a team. They can set up their team for some great kills or steals and they actually do have an impact on the game.

For instance, I was Bard support and my team were a bit busy pushing their lane. I had a feeling that the enemy team was going for drag so i ulted drag and them. I then W'd in, killed drag, and died shortly after. But by that time, my team was already near the drag pit and was able to pick off 3 of their team.

I support primary (top secondary). Not only do I enjoy playing support (usually), but I'd rather have someone who knows and wants to play support fill that role than someone who kinda just got stuck with it.

I like playing support, occasionally.

I think the problem with support-haters is that support is the only role in which you get flamed for getting kills :'D Playing support isn't a showcase as #lcsbigplays but crucially important for your team. Like being a bassist in a band (that is my situation #jazzbassistsunite)

Every single time I'm making huge plays with Lulu, some Fiora top yells: 'gj Graves, keep roflstomping the lane' while I am single-handedly responsible of the double kill.. sigh

I personally don't blame the support for getting the kills. After all, what matters is that the enemy died. It doesn't matter who killed him, because with a dead enemy we can get pushing and even objective advantage.

I've had a few instances in which a kill got away because I let off so someone else could get it. I don't let that happen any more. If I can position myself to secure it if my adc can't, I do so and just stay in range of the target. If not, I'm beating on it til it's dead and hoping the ADC gets last hit.

There was one time that I got the first two kills in a game. I had gone back to buy and my adc tried to engage just before I got back, they killed her under the tower but I managed to stun one under tower and then chased down the other. After that I didn't take get anymore kills but it did get me ahead so I could bully the lane.

supports can make big plays.

not just Thresh

Sevixys1 votes

I never said so. My point was, even if I make huge plays as a support, I don't usually get any respect for it. I didn't even mention thresh lol?

cllesh2 votes

well, i dont have any numbers but then neither does anyone else it seems, i want to play support.... i know people who main support.... we cant seem to get support role....

1st Movement2 votes

Then put secondary as another role no reason why people would put secondary as support if they have no intention in playing it. Lol

Once you hit lv 30 u might know how to play support by then

CDMarco2 votes

The thing with support is that even if you're great you generally get no recognition, no one cares that you're 2/5/30 they see the first two numbers. The next problem is that if you're not playing a kill lane support, (Annie Brand Karma Lux Morgana Velkoz ) if your ADC falls flat then there's nothing you can do besides get someone else on the team fed, normal supports just can't carry a game.

I used to hate playing support. Then I met Blitzcrank. Then I tried him top and continued to hate support.

I love playing support. Recently, I've been playing Bard, Janna, and Taric. Both Taric and Bard can snow ball and bully the lane pretty well. Janna admittedly kinda boring but if we have tons of hard engage is just peel for the carries.

The trick is if your adc is bad, roam and get other people fed. And I tend to always be near my fed teammates.

  1. Good ADCs duo. Playing support as solo means the ADC will suck.
  2. Matchmaking disregards position. High mmr as support means low mmr carries.
  3. Bad players having bad games make bad chat. #1 + #2 = #3.

All of the above are good reasons not to support in solo queue ever.

Going support in SoloQ is like being a street sweeper, it's a dirty work but somebody has to do it.

It's simple. Support is an easy role to do alright in, but requires a lot of team communication. It seems like unless you're an above average support wins and losses are just coincidental. You feel like you do less, especially if your ADc isn't on the same page as you. People don't like being the backliner and want to make plays, get kills, carry.

Support is by far the easiest role to perform adequately in. Ward, go in when your ADc feels like it, don't go in when it's a bad idea ... etc. You have no real threat of being shut down as you're only there for utility. That being said, it feels boring to not have any carry potential, it feels even worse when you do that same routine 8/10 games because nobody else wants to be a utility bot.

I love playing support. I main it. But it's most often a thankless job. You go in knowing that. On my good days I keep my team alive during laning and team fights. I can and have made significant impacts on my games as a support. Honestly a lot of it is attitude.

You're not a second mid. You're not there to get a ton of kills. You are there to support the team (whether through heals, peels, or being a walking meatshield), and give as much vision and denial of enemy vision as you can.

I have fun as support and take every game as a learning experience. It takes a certain type of person to enjoy being support. Everyone else is usually just complaining that they're "stuck" as that role.

As a final note, i've more often than not been blessed in solo to have adcs thank me and congratulate me in lane when we do well, such as getting kills. I of course say the same back. It's all about positive attitude.

I play support. Just Bard and Zilean, no one else. Bard is really only countered by spell shields and is good in any team comp. Zilean with 45% cdr is a team wide stun every 4 seconds, plus a 40s revive. Support is god awful boring if you play anyone else.

I always put support as my first choice and sometimes don't get it. Even at my MMR where most players are still stuck in the "IMMA CARRY!"/"We've got more kills, why is the enemy team winning?!?" stage of their development. The main reason I started playing support a lot is because a lot of the champions that I felt the most drawn to are supports, but it also seems to be the role where I really shine compared to the overly passive, helpless supports I've often seen when someone else gets it or the "TROLOLOL I'm going to play Darius support and stomp these noobs!" crowd (those are the worst...)

Quepha1 votes

I don't mind support every once in a while, but choosing support or fill as your secondary basically means your primary role choice gets thrown completely out the window.

Nekusen1 votes

Because supports don't have a "stellar" participation (no pentakills), and the better the support, the less you will notice he is there.

I've realized that most people don't even want to play support.

How long have you been playing League? If it's been longer than a couple months, I'm ashamed at you. [zombie-nunu-tears] This is probably one of the first things people tend to pick up on playing the game; nearly no one wants to be support. It takes a very specific personality to enjoy supporting. The vast majority of players want to be the carries and/or death dealers, they usually don't want to be the guy helping someone else be those things. It's not fun for them. That's not to say you can't carry or mass murder as a support, but the other four roles make the possibility much easier.

That's why you sometimes see people play Katarina Leblanc MasterYi support; they're going bot lane and they may even buy a sightstone, but they're going to try and get fed and carry instead of helping the marksman get fed most of the time.

atomicwit1 votes

Janna is the highest winrate in the game. People don't understand that there's more than one way to carry.

Asmosis1 votes

Support is literally my life, I don't know where I would be playing if I didn't pick up Support. All I know how to do is PEEL PEEL PEEL, I can engage and peel. Have you ever felt that feeling of landing a hook on the enemies carries after 30mins and single handily won the game for your team? One of my favorable feelings is predicting an enemy, you feel like a fucking GOD. Another fun feeling is when the you get your ADC 2+ kills and they get all the credit for it, you know secretly that you did all the work. An ADC is only as good as his/hers support. Don't get me wrong, don't play this role if you tilt easily, don't play this role if you don't know how to sit back and let the teammates kill. It's the best role in my opinion and it's the easiest to carry. I'm Silver 2/3 and I've been in matches with Plat people from high MMR.

Personally I don't like support not because it is borring...heck it Thresh, Zyra, Nami, Bard, they simply cant be borring. I don't play support because I don't want my whinny ADC to get all credita for my setups.
