Oh you're right. But if you don't communicate that you're muting your team, and all you ever do is ping and never respond to the inevitable barrage of text these people throw out, the second you "ignore" something one of them decided it was their right to tell you to do, you'll get reported, guaranteed. Double guaranteed if the game results in a loss. Triple guaranteed if you yourself also had a bad game.
Let's not pretend it doesn't happen like this cause it really does. I understand I sound pretty angry about it, I'm not really. It's just that what should sound like exaggeration is the stone-cold truth and the norm, and that's a HUGE problem.
As a side note I should add that I've never gone into a game and muted my entire team right off the bat, I wait for communication to break down before I ever do that (which happens at extremely predictable times by the way, like when your team gives up first blood, or when whoever on your team appointed themselves the only person who could possibly carry dies for about the 2nd time.) However I did decide that I was never going to be able to enjoy League of Legends again unless I completely stopped talking to my teammates, simply because the pattern of negative communication was so predictable and omnipresent, even when I'm not negative, even when I'm not talking at all. In fact I halfway believe that in normals (which is what I play when I play) the team that wins isn't decided by which team deserves to win based on gameplay or strategy or anything they actually do within the parameters of the game, it's determined by which team implodes on themselves first. Again huge, no MASSIVE problem here.
I like teamwork and I like problem solving, so not talking isn't my preferred method of playing the game. There exists a social aspect to gaming with other human beings, but after 4 years of playing the game the patterns of negativity have developed into their own predictable "meta" and /mute all seems to be the only real way to still enjoy the game. Talked about it with my friends who play too, and they agreed, some of them told me "I just do it by default now."
As a result, I haven't played the game in quite some time, took almost all of Season 6 off, saw that nothing changed on this front in preseason 7/early season 7, might never play again. The game and all of it's constant changes is still fun, the community is worse than ever. That's pretty shameful tbh.
