What abilities do you think the new champ have?

RcGjWO640w··6 votes·10,982 views

I feel like some really good ideas from just my impression of the animation definitely means he'll be a pain in the ass to fight in the jungle.

Some possible abilities I can see him having are:

  • Getting a ping or notification whenever a jungle camp is cleared by an enemy while he's in a certain radius.
  • His lines that pertain to, "all you have to do is ask" make me think that he'll be able to receive a buff from a jungle monster from one of his abilities, just as if he'd smote it.
  • Definitely some kind of root or stun.
  • Maybe some kind of anti-jungler buff where if someone's killed a jungle monster in the last minute or so, he gets bonus damage on them.
  • More than likely will be a tank or a support, similar to Maokai. This is one I'm actually kind of skeptical about since we already have Maokai and I think if they went the tanky/support route with him, he'd just feel too similar.

What do you guys think he can do? If you already know, I'd love a link to it.

These speculation threads are always really fun to read through from a dev perspective, cool to see people put together theories (some accurate, some inaccurate) based off the information currently available, particularly when people make some really good intuitive leaps :).

In terms of potential overlap with Maokai that was something that was also on our minds when developing Ivern. We made sure to regularly check that we were delivering fairly different gameplay, visual appearance and personality despite the thematic overlap as a result. Hopefully that comes through as intended, really curious to see what you folks think once he's revealed.

quick question, how do you pronounce his name?

WarWork1 votes

I think it might be (eye)+(vern) As in Ivy + Fern

RiotMeddler3 votes

Yep, eye+vern matches the pronounciation we've been using.

quick question, how do you pronounce his name?

Ivern, Like Ivan, but "vern" instead of "van"

RcGjWO640w1 votes

That's something I'd thought about. Even with the similarities, I know you guys could see them too, probably even more keenly, so what I'm particularly excited for is seeing just how different you guys have made him.

Just one question, he could be a tank AD carry for all i care, Does he have a root?

BADxW0LF1 votes

I'm guessing he is NEXT PBE cycle?

DrCyanide1 votes

As always.

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I get the impression he's some kind of jungler who doesn't kill the campus but hard to guess how he would "clear" the jungle then

Astôlfo1 votes

Perhaps he's manaless and has a resource he'd build instead together with each jungle camp (like, friendliness/pacifism/etc)? So when the bar on the jungle creature is "full", it'd grant him the same gold/EXP as if they had died, and perhaps something unique to Ivern as well. Once said bar is full, they might visually scamper away and hide or such until the 'bar' would 'decay' (same time as a normal death timer)?

Melledoneus2 votes

Any information you're willing to relay to us? To keep the hype going? Is he going to spawn bushes?

Sharel161 votes

"we were delivering fairly different gameplay" you say.. well how about Lux & Morgana?

Q,W,E are externally similar, so similar that u could release them both at the same time, change the lore and make them twin sisters or something and get away with it

Critmaster Garen8 votes

maybe hes able to jungle without killing the monsters. he might even be able to use them as minions.

from the look of it, he might also be able to make additional bushes around the map.

RcGjWO640w1 votes

See, that's what I was thinking. Like, he gets the buffs from monsters without having to smite or kill them. I was thinking creating bushes, but I guess I didn't put that up there, but yeah, I think that's something Riot's been wanting to do more and more. They really like terrain manipulation.

Meep Man5 votes

One champ closer to a full plant team!

I think he can make a bush, then pick it up and hit you with it. Why? Because before he kills you with the bush, he's gonna say "Shush now little one, you got grass in your ass."

reaperteaser4 votes

being a friend to the forest and jgl creeps i dont think smite will work with his theme. that being said, i think he will get his own jgl item (like vik has his own item) that will change how his smite works on jgl monsters.

RcGjWO640w2 votes

That's what I meant. He could gain the buffs from jungle camps without smiting them, probably one of his abilities or something on his passive.

LXII2 votes

Shyvana still kills the dragon eventually.

I think it would be super weird if this guy just can't farm the jungle at all and would open him up to a TON of counter jungling. But we will see.

Ashen Rider9 votes

Shyvana doesn't like dragons though. They tried to kill her for being an 'abomination'

Arakadia1 votes

I think he will move/effect the camps so they cant be killed or they become his minions.

LXII1 votes

I think he will get them as his minions as well, but he can't very well have them all at once. Unless he literally just goes into the jungle, shoos the camps away then proceeds to support lanes I can't see a way out of him having to do a little clearing.

Now that I've typed that out it actually sounds alright though lol.

Beldair2 votes

I believe a snare, Bush escape mechanism, possibly AD stats for abilities, and probably a healing mechanic.

Oleandervine2 votes

What we do know from another post by a Rioter (edit: Meddler!) but Ivern will utilize some kind of map pinpoint mechanic that is visible in parts or acts differently for both teams (this was revealed when asking why Kindred's marks on camps lingered for friendlies instead of updating in status like the Red/Blue monster icons)

Solidair32 votes

Maybe he can create temporary brush that only works for his allies? that would be interesting

x R U K A x2 votes

He's definitely going to be a jungler while also being able to play as a support. I personally feel like he is going to be to much like Maokai, and I mean, do we really need another tank champion? Especially when it's already the tank meta? Shouldn't Riot be trying to break the meta to help push the gameplay forward and make it even more intense?

Anyways, when it comes to his abilities I feel like one of them will be for him to be able to grow a bush anywhere he wants that slows enemies that walk through it and stealths allies. From his video it makes him look like some sort of protector of the forest, a little to similar to Maokai, but I can't help getting the feeling that his passive is that he heals or gets some sort of extra buff when he kills monsters. Another ability of his might be that he can turn jungle monsters into temporary minions of his. For his ult, it's definitely going to be some sort of AOE because basically almost all tanks have an AOE ult, again a little to much like Maokai.

I also feel that Riot should really start rethinking about how much CC they give their tank champions. Yes, tanks should have some CC but when you give them like 3 different knock-ups or slows they're basically a support champion. Tanks should be able to disrupt enemies but their main purpose is to soak up damage for their team. I mean giving them so much CC is the reason we have people who play Sion, who has 2 knock-ups, a stun, and a slow, as support. Not to mention Maokai who has 2 slows, a knock-back, and a root.

I just hope the assassin update will finally change the meta. I'm so sick of tank Karma and tank Yasuo.

Decrit1 votes

iiii really don' t think Riot releases champions based around meta, because

  1. they don' t control major part of it, that just happens
  2. this champ has been in development for sure for a long time, so i really doubt they could change it too much on the fly
  3. champions released are meant to stand the time, so it' s even more useless release champions based on actual meta
x R U K A x2 votes

I do know they don't control the meta but they do influence what the current meta is. It's basically been the "tank meta" through, so far, all of season 6 and the last few patches of season 5. That gave them plenty of time to go through the champion and see how they could change and/or remake him without having to go to far from the original concept of the champion.

RcGjWO640w1 votes

They influence it because they're the one changing the game. They're the one adding new champions and making balance changes that affects how the overall meta develops. Riot doesn't sit down and say, "Okay, this season, I'm thinking we make tanks the new meta." No, tanks get a decent rework, some QoL changes and suddenly they're the cream of the crop since they've gotten the most recent attention.

x R U K A x2 votes

That's exactly what I meant by "influence." I thought people were smart enough to realize that.

Q- creates a shield on an ally absorbing up to 10% of Ivern max health. If cast on an enemy it gives a magic damage over time for 10% of Ivern max health.

W- create a bush anywhere. Ally's can see enemy's in the bush. If an enemy enters the bush they are slowed by 20%. Allies who enter the bush gain a 50% run speed bonus.

W- passive Ivern is a walking ward, has vision of nearby bushes, if one or more allied champions are within 500 units of him he gains an extra 10% range of vision per ally. If no allies are around within 1000 units his passive E is disabled and becomes a skill shot root.

R- temporarily gives vision of the entire map (reverse Nocturine). Upon second cast, destroys all enemy wards, if no wards are placed 30% slow to all enemy champions.

Passive- his natural affiliation for the jungle monsters makes him a protector of all living animals. If a jungle monster is slain, it leaves an orb for him to pick up. Gains 3 armor 3 MR and 3 HP permanent for each orb obtained.

(These are all at rank one ability's btw, I'm not good at scaling stuff).

Oops I forgot to give the ability names....oh well you guys make em up lol.

Handy Sandy 1 votes

If this is about the voice thing while killing monsters, wasn't it already confirmed that the splash art guy wasn't a new champion?

RcGjWO640w3 votes

Riot just released a video today. Short animation. Give it a watch.

Oh must have not seen that :P

Ivern looks like a Gremlin and a tree had a baby :P

I'm sure he can create / manipulate bushes, and just a crazy idea, maybe he can jungle without smite? Maybe one of his skills will work like smite

Wyrmblade1 votes

What I'm getting so far

He has some interaction with jungle mobs that might only be seen by a single team. He has a root He can make bushes He isn't a total pacifist, still willing to fight enemy champions. Might be a good counter jungler. Is creepy as hell and I love him.

Surr20plz1 votes

I'm thinking he's going to cuddle the camps instead of kill them.

It would be cool if he could buff the enemy jg's camps too.

SlashStriker1 votes

What abilities do you think the new champ have?

friendly

Sohleks1 votes

He goes around the jungle making friends not killing. And then he ganks the enemy laners with an army of Bambi & friends. With jetpacks come late game.

BloodyTompon1 votes

And friken lasers on their heads.

Meep Man1 votes

Might as well just say he ganks them with bunch of Arcade Hecarims

RedViper441 votes

Fuck. This better not be a maokai or a counter jungler. But I also think he might have like a mordekaiser pet thing with Jungle monsters

ticklebert1 votes

Could one of his abilities interact with tall grass? (per the animation in the teaser)

RoaminOrc1 votes

What if instead of doing damage to jungle camps he did like friendship damage or something. It would be the same idea but instead he is trying to tame them. Then maybe he gains that jungle camp as a minion for a little while. I mean hell Mordekaiser can get a pet Elder Dragon. I also saw another great idea on one of the abilities and that was when within a certain radius of a camp that was cleared by an enemy champion he would get notified. Also could he get buffs like the smite gives but instead has some sort of ability? So he isn't killing anything in the jungle he is gaining them as allies and can even still "smite" in a sense to get the buffs.

exploding magic1 votes
  1. Maybe he is a counter jungle. He specializes in invading ( by creating bush?) then jumping out on the enemy jungler when they are about to kill a camp? That would be a pretty cool champion.
TheProAndrew1 votes

he might me able to create bushes for a period of time (kind of a fog of war for your allies but is not invi)

ReZisT Lust1 votes

Hes got the ability to make rengar a bot lane adc lolz

Meep Man1 votes

Something no one has noticed so far, it seems, is that his roots grow yellow and he taps a spot on the ground in the clip that glows yellow. Therefore, I think his power revolves on yellow spots around the map that either he creates or something AI creates. Probably revolving around the Jungle. My guess is that Ivern is Riot's attempt to make a healthy Skarner. Instead of a territorial killing machine, Ivern is a territorial Support/Tank that makes combat for his enemies incredibly frustrating around his points of power, which are likely located within the Jungle.

THEREFORE, I believe that Ivern is a possibly meta warping champion in that he promotes his team to be within the Jungle at all times to stay within his points of power. You push from the Jungle, get farm from the Jungle, etc.. Would not be surprised if Ivern warps the meta incredibly if he is anything like what I think he will be.
