Anyone ever realize that Jayce has no real counters?

RcGjWO640w··16 votes·3,902 views

There's not a single champion in the game who does anything meaningful against Jayce. Xerath's range. Riven's melee. A knock back. Huge base damage means an amazing early game. Massive damage scalings which guarantees an amazing late game. A move speed buff. Man, people bitch about Yasuo being overloaded and uncounterable, but Jayce really hammers (literally) home the "Jayce walks into a bar, there is no counter" thing.

did someone say Jayce ? WHERE? When did you see him?

Ralanr6 votes

He is one of the rarest Pokemon.

In2TheRainYires9 votes

He may seem so at first...until you realise that he's the very definition of a 'Jack of all trades-master of none'. He has long cooldowns on his e which prevents gate spam, he has mana issues which pretty much means he's forced to build tear for his damage build. He also doesn't have a shield in his kit iirc. Don't get me wrong, he can be a great champion in the right hands but everything he can bring to the table, other champs can do it better.

xBushx6 votes

To say he doesn't have a counter is a stretch.

If I had to pick a couple champs I would play INTO Jayce without question. I would play Irelia or Kennen Top. Ahri or Ori Mid. I promise you I would poop on the Jayce.

No one even plays Jayce (besides me) and a good Irelia Gnar Quinn can fuck me six ways to sunday

RcGjWO640w1 votes

Quinn just does nothing against Jayce. Maybe if you're terribly mispositioned and you let her open up with her Q on you and combo, but other than that, Jayce both out ranges and out damages her. The best a Quinn can hope for is to just farm into the mid game, get some ganks and focus on being the split pushing monstertruck she is rather than trying to win lane.

Wînter Fox1 votes
  1. Quinn at 525 range out-ranges Jayce's 500 mercury cannon.
  2. Quinn's whole kit makes his melee form null and void. Which is half his damage and his mana regen.
  3. Even if it becomes an even farm lane - Quinn is better split pusher, faster at getting into team fights, and scarier late game.
Im The Jayce God1 votes

True, but you can easily Q+E combo her with hammer and canon, and she'll die instantly. Probably my favorite matchup as a jayce.

Slamurai Jack4 votes

Jayce is countered by picking a champ with a strong ultimate and not feeding him before lvl 6. Pretty simple really.

jayce has a shield?

I feel like he's almost sleeper Op. At least tank Jayce is.

Probably because Yasuo is seen even more often than Jayce has ever been, and thus is even more of an annoyance to all them salty Yasuo haters.

Yeah, one of the educational League Youtubers, forgot who, made a list on the top ten over-loaded champions, Yasuo was somewhere around number 8 and Jayce was 1 I think lol.

good damage does not guarantee a good lategame

Jayce is somewhat overpowered but completely outshined by truly broken champions like Zed and Yasuo.

Tank Jayce OP

RcGjWO640w4 votes

With his scalings and base damage. He could build a Triforce and maybe 1 AD item and full tank from there and be completely unstoppable. I believe it.

Lovelle2 votes

I've tried it. He's just a worse Irelia when you build him that way. Late game, you will get CC'd and shredded just trying to reach the ADC. He's not really rewarded for investing into his melee form. Hypercharge ends up becoming the strongest skill in his kit and his late game is mediocre at best if you don't build around it.

The tank build "can" catch people by surprise though, especially if he had a bad start. It can help him stay relevant until he can pick up some real damage.

RcGjWO640w2 votes

I have noticed recently that from getting reviews of high tier Jayce play, he's very hard to keep relevant in the game. His kit basically revolves around good poke and having the capacity to all-in people. It's just the fact that he only has soft counters makes it more difficult to shut down, so he gets ahead and becomes a monster. In higher tier play, though, when people just generally feed much less, it makes it harder for a Jayce to stay scaled up with a lot of the meta, which means either his damage or tankiness falls off quickly, unless he's able to maintain a lead. Plat and Diamond players, I've noticed, are just good at not letting a Jayce get retarded in the first place, and it cuts out a lot of his power. It's like a good mid laner preventing a Katarina from getting kills in lane or roaming and she's effectively useless for the rest of the game without that early lead.

Lovelle1 votes

His late game damage is really high, but due to his poke/all-in nature, he's tricky to play when the game reaches that point. He has to constantly switch between ranged/melee to fully utilize his kit, but he doesn't get a shield or multiple dashes like most melee dps champions do these days. You get the most out of his kit by building him full damage, preferably with some crit. However, you'll see most high-elo players don't bother with crit because it's a difficult stat to itemize for AD casters right now. Both the Ghostblade and Trinity Force changes have almost killed that build. This is also one of the primary reasons you see nearly every caster-based ADC running armor pen builds and completely skipping IE.

ZephyrDrake2 votes

well if Jayce was actually decent then he would be a problem but he really has no optimal build, his play style is all over the place and requires him doing stupidly well early to be of any real use as the game advances

RcGjWO640w4 votes

He does have an optimal build. Full AD. There's literally no point in building AP since the main bulk of his damage scales so hard (1.2 and 1.0 AD scalings from his Q and E respectively) that building full AD provides the maximum amount of burst and sustained damage possible on him.

wow... "build full AD" that kinda defeats the purpose of him building tanky... also what type of build? armor pen build? just whatever item gives him the most AD? some items that give AD with some survavility? glass cannon?

Saying that the optimal build is "building full AD" is like saying that the optimal build of a mage is going "full AP" with no regard of WHAT they should be building. item 3147 should i build that on Jayce? it gives AD! item 3031 how about this? should i build it on Jayce? once again it gives AD! item 3022 how about this also?

People play Jayce?

I've seen some very terrible jayces.

But what you described also goes for Nidalee

Hyperiön1 votes

Nidalee has a few good counters. I play Kha, and I never has issues with counter jungling her. My Q does too much dmg, that she has to run, flash, or else I get a kill.

RcGjWO640w1 votes

I main Vi jg myself. Never have a problem with her either.

CeexSett2 votes

He has everything, but those everythings are just good.

Good poke, but there is better. Good all in, but there is better. Good early game, but there is better. Good scalings, but there is better.

There is no reason to pick him unless you really like playing him. He is barely going to do anything for your team because he CAN do anything but ends up doing SOME of that anything. And it doesn't matter how DECENTLY he can poke, if you want poke you have better options, same for eveything else he does.

RcGjWO640w1 votes

Jacks of all trades have always been superior to one tricks in the game. Period. Yeah, there are people who do everything he does "better", but he does everything well enough also mixed with the fact that he can do everything. He can hard counter almost any top laner in the game simply by changing up the way his kit works. He has so many options to use to beat out so many opponents.

You're acting like just because there are champions who poke better or who all in better means that he's not somehow extremely strong. If he did all of those things like crap, then I could understand their argument, but good is good. When you stop to reflect on any negative in his kit, he almost always has an answer to them through one of his 6 abilities or can build for it someway.

Yasuo's an example of a champion who does a lot, while so many champs do individual things better. It's the fact that champions like Yasuo and Jayce bring so many cards to the table that it lets them be monsters whenever they please. They're extremely safe picks because both of them lack fundamental hard counters. They have hard matchups, sure, but at the end of the day the design of both of those champions is to make "hard" matchups simply skill matchups at best. It's not like playing a Veiger into an Ahri where no matter how skilled you are, you're likely going to get shit on. Yasuo and Jayce can outplay hard counters with little consequence.

CeexSett1 votes

But I didn't mean to say Jayce was bad. It's just that there is no reason to pick him, unless you are first pick and want to be safe or are a OTP. In every other situation, the team's needs are better filled by a specific champion, like a long range poker, a engage/all in champion, a lane bully or a late game carry.

That's why he sees little play, no one has ever thaught: "Wow our team really needs a Jayce here". But I never meant to say he was bad or trash or not worth picking.

On a side note, I was wondering how a team full of Jacks of all trades would do.

Top: Jayce Jungle: IDK help me here Mid: Ahri Marksman: Lucian (maybe) Support: Thresh

RcGjWO640w1 votes

Drop Vi into there as the Jungler and I'd wager you have yourself a very strong comp, actually. Good poke. Great initiation. Awesome CC. Tons of damage. All of them spike pretty hard in the mid game. Which makes them very difficult to deal with once laning phase actually ends.

CeexSett1 votes

Yeah you're right, it is a great team comp. Strong laners, great mid game power spikes, stil relevant late game, got CC, poke, engage, disengage and lots of damage.

I just created a great comp.

Malphite works well against him. Nunu isn't too bad since you can poke and out sustain him. Mundo still works well against him. There are others but I just named a few.

fiora

RcGjWO640w1 votes

I'd laugh at any Jayce who gets beat by a Fiora. His huge base damages on his poke means that Fiora won't ever be healthy enough in lane to try all-inning him. He can kite her into oblivion and can knock her back if she ever actually gets into melee range. Except for the greatest timed riposte in the universe, nothing's going to save that Fiora.

This^ The only reason Jayces would lose to Fiora is if theyre diving her with Hammer Q+E combo, youre suppose to poke her from range nonstop, and if she lunges at you, hammer her into your tower and destroy her.

fiora

fiora takes actual risk to play mid to lategame in teamfights.

jayce can literally be effective by standing back and spamming empowered q's at the enemy backline.

i honestly think his knockback is the main issue. if it were more conditional and not direct targeted and unavoidable every time its up, then he would be more vulnerable to get caught out in general.

its pretty much what allows him to play passive and poke in cannon stance throughout the lane phase. whenever he gets caught, he just slams you away and runs away with his stance swap movement speed bonus to resume poking.

Lovelle1 votes

If you're going to complain about Jayce's disengage, you might as well complain about pretty much every ranged top laner while you're at it. Most of them are far more annoying when it comes to kiting/disengaging. At least Jayce has mana costs.

they are not more anoying. maybe because jayce numbers are slightly undertuned so you dont really feel how much of a pain in the ass he is.

but hes at least on the same level of anoying as any other ranged top laner.

Lovelle1 votes

I play him, so there may be some bias there, but I feel like his itemization is more of an issue right now than his numbers. It's hard to build every stat he wants without sacrificing something, and he's a very momentum-based champ, which poses quite a problem in today's snowball heavy League. If you don't build him an exact certain way, based on the part of the game, he'll just be a liability to his team. He's not like GP, who's going to come back and kill your team, even when he started 1/3. He has no shields and all he has is a single knockback to disengage. Pretty much every new champion, since his release, has zero issues closing the gap after he E's them.

As long as they don't buff his Q or W, Jayce shouldn't be that much of a problem unless you run into a main.

Y'know, there's a saying:

#Easier said than done

Explains a lot why Jayce is only getting 1.63% playrate.

RcGjWO640w1 votes

That's the weird thing I never understood. I understand he's a champ that takes a little practice. But 10 games in on Jayce and you should have a fairly solid grasp on his kit and combos. I'm really thinking about picking him up myself. Not only being an easy ticket to some sweet freelo right now, he just looks fun as hell to play. I need a really mechanical and fun champion ever since Azir's been nerfed into the ground. :(

Lovelle1 votes

10 games are not enough and I say this as someone that plays him fairly often. Also, yes Fiora beats Jayce in nearly every scenario, but especially once the laning phase ends. Have you ever tried escaping from her as Jayce? It's impossible and he straight up loses to her in a duel (just like most champions do). You can't even let her in melee range as Jayce or you will lose.

Sèx Craved Eve1 votes

Riven's pretty good against him once she gets items. Just flashes and insta kills him

Im The Jayce God1 votes

Technically Riven is good early game, then once jayce and riven get items, jayce wins hard. Jayce can poke Riven for days, and then hammer Q combo her and get her to no health fast

He falls into the category with Gnar Yasuo Orianna Ekko Elise etc

They have no hard counters in the game due to their kits having so much in them to deal with different threats. Almost all matchups are in their favor or skill matchups.

RcGjWO640w2 votes

Which this meta has been favoring heavily, unfortunately. With the item changes mixed with heavy nerfs to the classic one tricks, it makes hyperversatile champions way more powerful than they've been in previous seasons. They're extremely simple champions with a lot of options. They're some of the main champs boosters use since they're always good no matter what team comp they're in.

And inb4 Ekko main flame. Yes. All of these champions are braindead to play if you have 10 games of experience with them. Ekko included.

Elkington1 votes

Jayce's base damage isn't very high at all or you would see him build things like item 3078 more often, to take advantage of his low cooldowns, especially since it's a very strong item right now. Most ADCs even have more damage early than Jayce, which is probably why they want to buff him. His laning is literally the only thing that gives him any kind of advantage right now. For literally anything else, another champion can do it better. They seem to want to give him more late game scaling, because that's where he seems to struggle the most.
