Where does work on akali fit into the schedule for next year?

I have been waiting for Akali to be looked at ever since Riot quietly removed her from competitive play by not allowing crescent slash to proc her mark. Her win rate and play rate have not been that wonderful over the last 2 years but playing against her when ahead is almost impossible because of her mobility and sticking power. On the flip side she doesn't offer anything to the team when behind. I am only in silver and people in the lower Elos are smart enough to carry a pink ward around and eliminate her shroud advantage which in the case of other invisible champs isn't as big an issue because their stealth isn't confined to a visible circle. It just seems like her kit should be tinkered with and I know she didn't qualify for the assassin rework so maybe a Red will give us their opinion.

It wont be for quite awhile. The assassin update is first. Then you have at least Warwick, Galio, and Urgot that are ahead of Akali. Maybe more, thats just off the top of my head

My understanding is that they're not touching her in the assassin update because they feel she needs a full remake.

Ever since S1, she's been a really binary champion who tends to get nerfed whenever she gets popular (because like you mentioned, she has very low counterplay). I'd be happy to see a rework on her.

Though I don't think she is unplayable right now. I think her laning phase is surprisingly not that bad right now. And she can still snowball out of control and completely take over a game off of just a few kills.
