Should Frozen Mallet actually exist?
Often the item gets compared to
, but I think that it is incorrect, as the slow is still ability dependant, and therefore ressource and cooldown dependant and often dodgable (with Cassio being the exeption, but I have given up hope on her anyways and wait for her next rework as of now).
Frozen Mallet on the other hand is problematic, as it was often seen with the surge of tank Yasuos: once he got you, you were not getting away. By the time you broke through the flow shield and actually damaged him he had is Q3, Ult and you were pretty much dead.
The purpose of the item is to provide sticking power, yet most of the melee champions are designed to either already HAVE that sticking power, or they are specifically designed to not have it as it is an intended weakness.
And ofc ranged champions can abose that as well. I remember the dark times of then toplane Vayne with a Frozen Mallet was a thing. She pretty much had her W proceed three or four times when you could finally reach her.
That is why the item is also so darn expensive. Mostly because if it was a good pick literally every marksman would get it (apart from Ashe maybe). Sure, a bit less damage on every shot, but now your targets can never flee and them getting on to you is harder too! And if it was melee only and it was a good item it would show some serious counterplay issues. As I see it Mallet is one of the old relicts, effects and structures that live on since league's origins as a Warcraft 3 mod. I am not sure if it is a good or worthwhile item to have in a modern MOBA. I'd personally vote for making it an active item, restricted to melees only. Kinda like a tank variant of
to slow a small aoe or something like that.
