Open Mid - the do's and don'ts.

Open mid has surged in popularity in NA. Some people use it as an excuse when they're doing poorly, some people have a never give up, never surrender attitude. And frankly, most, if not all open mids are clown fiestas since nobody knows how (or why) they work.

Explaining that is my job.

History - open mid started in Korea. Why? Because arguably the most common form of gaming is internet cafes. For about a dollar an hour, you can go play your games on pretty high end PCs with a bunch of friends in an area that serves food and drinks. That's the culture there. When you're losing a game by a deficit of X kills, Y towers, and Z dragons, you have a very small chance of making a comeback. Maybe your jungler is just garbage and you can't win because he's not useful. So instead of praying for a miracle, they open mid at 15 minutes and try go to another match instead of trying to inch your way out of a 45 minute game with a high chance of losing. If 7-8 of the players are at gaming cafes (we're accounting for the one guy with a good PC and a streamer like Cowsep who probably wouldn't want to go outside in that outfit), then it makes perfect sense because it saves money.

Translating that to NA - that's almost nonexistent. Yeah there are games you can't come back from, but the social culture isn't there. The cost isn't nearly as problematic (you don't spend nearly as much money on internet in your house as they do in their internet cafes). On top of that NA has insane amounts of diversity, which leads to very different mindsets. Over in Korea it's just get to the highest rank you can as quickly as possible so you can get all the free food, admiration, and bitches. So while they have the same variety of mindsets, as a percentage there are a lot more people just focused on the climb. There are a lot more toxic, over-competitive players because iirc toxicity is NOT punished over there.

So when should you open? Hardly ever. You need to properly gauge when a game is winnable (without a miracle happening) and when the win is so unlikely you're just pissing away time. A score of 0-5 doesn't make the game instantly over. Having 3 of those kills on a Kha'Zix jungle who also took first tower... okay maybe it is. Disconnects of ~7-8 minutes, having unbelievable amounts of gold on a snowball champion playing flawlessly, one of your crucial teammates showing a serious lack of game sense, and having a huge objective disparity before 15 minutes are okay times to open mid. Any other time? Probably not.

And lastly, try get your team to vote unanimously. Anything else and you're asking for an AFK report.

Okay I lied this is the last thing if you do get a successful, unanimous open mid for the love of all things good and holy just sit in the fountain and stop trying to pad your stats.

I think the best time to open mid is when your mid turrets and nexus turrets are broken at 15 minutes.

15 mins?... I could argue that if theyve done all those things at 15 mins and still havnt ended then they're probably garb.

Some people quit too early sure.. But others need to swallow their pride and just admit you can't win them all.. Just quit wasting time and re-go a new one.

I finally had a game today where every1 agreed to open mid by 8 mins.. it was the best feeling in the world not wasting another 12 minutes for a chance that some asshole presses no.

This game was 4v5 and all lanes had lost so God bless those who open'd with me. I love you <3

There are definitely times (like a 4v5 where the people who ARE there are all losing).

There are a lot of times people want to give up that are really winnable games. Heck - games where you're LEADING. Their attitude throws the entire game though - if they've stopped trying then sure you may as well surrender because it's effectively a 4v5.

I've made come backs from just about every non-4v5 position in the game outside of the enemy team having already killed us and ready to end the game on that push. I've had won games where the enemy team has killed 12 (yes, TWELVE) inhibitors and 4 Barons and 8 Dragons (back when 5th drag gave the boost). If the enemy team can't coordinate a push to down your Nexus towers (or your waveclear is just that good) you will eventually scale to everyone 6 items and one teamfight will decide the match. (That game was about 1h20min btw).

It's not even unlikely. If you're below Diamond, the enemy team WILL throw. It's not even an "if". They will. It's just that most of the time you fail to capitalize on the throw - you don't even realize they just threw necessarily (or you threw harder first so they didn't get the opportunity to throw). Now, if you're going to start accounting for that your teammates are garbage and that's why you're in the situation then sure. If the enemy jungler just crapped on every lane though but otherwise people are playing somewhat intelligently, making the come back is very possible.

There's one thing I don't get. I don't mind an open mid when the whole team agrees to it. Why can't I just go farm a side wave and not attack their turret while they end the game.

Like, I get it, if I start attacking your turret you think I'm secretly trying to get us back in the game. For some reason you think it's a secret strategy that if I only give up mid tier 1, 2, 3, and inhib but I get top tier 1 in return I'm going to somehow carry against you - so better send 4 to kill me. So I won't touch your turret - but I'm going to sit here for 5min while you get a free win, why can't I practice my last hitting?

Seems to be a severe lack of logic in the team that's being given the open mid - even if opponents are playing elsewhere they're clearly making awful trades. A 15min inhib is going to win you the game even if 2 of us are in each side lane and we take 4 turrets there (I mean, maybe that's a bit much because of gold disparity, but still the early inhibitor is a huge advantage towards the rest of the objectives since it's so hard to clear supers with early stats).
