i can see why he has range in his Q so it offsets some weaknesses.

He is good in alot of matchups, but he still has his counters. Most painful one is Rammus. Rammus

This guy basically forbids you to use your W the entire laning phase (and most likely still forbids it in the teamfights later on), because his W will just punish the hell out of you if you try.

I like to go Tahm first in top. I can't really think of any top laners who can push him out of lane.

If they go Vayne just keep Q at rank 1 and start doran's ring. You can just sit back and farm with your Q and wait for your jungler to come for an easy 2v1.

I'd say: DrMundo Galio Maokai Urgot

I don't think I've ever picked one of these champions and felt really hard countered. The best champions to safely first pick are usually decently durable ones that can either soak up damage without much negatives or farm from a moderate distance. Mundo, Galio, and Maokai can soak up a good bit of damage, and Mundo and Urgot can nicely farm from a distance.

i lean toward FF akali when I'm forced to pick top first--even if you get paired against someone who's difficult to trade with, you can still farm under turret pretty well & scale into midgame, or even gank mid if conditions are favorable.

akali is also really hard to pin-down when their jg shows up to gank--her W and E alone cover a pretty impressive distance, and flash & R really push her mobility over the top.
