So what does reducing the XP needed to hit level 30 actually fix?

(For the sake of this thread, we're assuming no money is being spent on the game. This IS a free to play game, after all.)

As far as I can tell, all it does is get actual new players to a level they're probably not ready for quicker.

  • Obviously getting fewer games in towards 30 means less time to learn the game.
  • Fewer games in turn means less IP overall, which means less content is available to them.

This does nothing to solve other glaring problems, like the lack of any decent in-game instructions or tutorials (what supporting actually entails, about jungling, even about the value of runes), or the fact that getting a remotely decent variety of champions to play (which is one of this game's selling points) takes AGES of grinding.

Hextech crafting (which in theory would be a way to get some more champions) also isn't really new player friendly. A new player is very likely hard-pressed to get an S rank, on top of likely playing free rotation champions which you can't earn chests for anyway. So if they DO manage a high rank on a free champion, they'll want to buy it. If they buy it with IP, that's less IP to have for runes. Then they'll hit level 30 and wonder why many of their lane opponents seem stronger than they are early on.

Keystones are also a bit of a rough patch themselves, since as early as like level 10 (possibly earlier), there's always the chance of someone being matched against at least one opponent who's already at least level 18. A non-keystone laner against a laner with one is rather imbalanced assuming an equal skill level (Thunderlord's is basically an extra ability itself, to cite one keystone), let alone if the keystone laner is a better player.

Early level League only looks like the same game as "full" League on the surface, but it's really not. The content variety is sorely lacking, the game is played very differently when minimal smurfing is involved, and it just does little to prepare anyone for the reality.

And cutting the XP to 30 just fast-forwards it.

(I hope I didn't do too rough a job trying to articulate my points. Debate isn't something I'm particularly good at.)

I think the main thing is it lets them get full runes and masteries quicker. I don't think most newly 30 players just jump right into ranked unless they've been doing VERY well in PvP, and since thats the main other thing getting to 30 gives you, I'm pretty sure the runes, masteries, and general frustration elimination (from all the grinding) are the main goals.

Hitting level 20 just unlocks the ability to buy T3 runes. That still doesn't mean they have the IP to get them (and they played less games to get to level 20 than before the XP cut, so again, less IP earned overall), especially if they bought a champion or two they happened to like playing from the free rotation.

I did overlook that certain runes were made cheaper, though it's only the bare basic ones. In particular, your only choice of truly cheap marks being AD.

There's no easy solution to it, but the changes just seem to benefit smurfs/alt accounts far more than actual new players.

It may be because not many people enjoy playing a slow game and if you level up more quickly they will be more interested in playing. It still, I'm sure, will take a while to level up but now noobs can get more involved in the game imo. :)

I made a smurf just yesterday because it's easier to level an account now. I'd rather not spend a lot of time grinding for another account, so I'm glad they made this change. The only problem I'm having with going through the "new" player experience is no runes and no masteries. So in all honesty, I think that the system is better now because it allows players to access important parts of the game sooner. (I made my smurf to be a Nidalee one-trick in ranked and I can't jungle with her until level 20 because I need runes and masteries).
