Possible solution to Drain/Sustain tanks

I dont think its a secret that Riot has had quite a bit of trouble trying to balance drain/sustain tanks. I thiink we've all seen the ups and downs of champs like Vladimir Swain Volibear etc. There's one thing that always struck me as an obvious road block to getting these champs balanced. Which leads me to my suggestion:

Remove Grievous Wounds

NOW WAIT. Let me explain.

You now have to re-balance them around the fact that grievous wounds is gone. Which means drain/sustain tanks are going to have to take a hit to their self healing.

It seems to me that these champs always have to be balanced around the fact that grievous wounds exists. This leads to a problem. If you balance them under the assumption that they have grievous wounds applied to them, they are oppressive when it isn't. On the flip side, if you balance them under the assumption that grievous wounds is not applied, they seem weak when it is. Even if you balance them somewhere in the middle, they're still going to be tilted toward one side or the other with and without GW applied.

Another point I would like to make is that GW should be removed for clarity issues. GW as it is is a very 'unseen' power. One second Vlad is popping 1k+ heals and the next he's manageable. Removing GW will make these champions much more stable and adds much more clarity for playing against them. There's no longer an unseen GW variable to factor in.

The presence of these champs alone also forces people to pick up certain items to deal with them. Let's be honest, item 3165 is not optimal for a lot of mid laners. Although I do like the idea of adjusting your build for the situation you are in, I don't feel having one option for AP and one for AD fits that concept. Thats more like being locked into an item instead of having to consider your best option.

tl;dr Grevious Wounds should be removed for clarity issues, BUT drain/sustain tanks have to be re-balanced around the fact that its gone

You'd think that but back when GW were removed, it didn't solve a thing. All it did was make it to where they went unchecked. Because you can't balance sustain around not having something to counter it, because by its very nature, the ideal scenario for a sustainer is obviously to just keep healing and not dying, and by extension, there is no way to really make sustain dynamic for both parties outside of giving the opponent a tool to deal with it and having the sustainer be mindful of it and play around it.

So instead of complaining about sustain champs, suck it up and buy aitem 3123 for once in your damn life instead of being greedy and getting item 3034 or a second crit item.

But alas, it is the LoL curse, where certain aspects remain balanced or imbalanced moreso due to the player bases unwillingness or reluctance to use the tools at their disposal, as opposed to them actually being balanced/unbalanced.

In hindsight, wards were broken back in S3 lol.

This is the basic source of all bitchiness from ADC's. They will never build an item that is perceived as inefficient, even if it's necessary to counterbuild the enemy sustain. But some times, the argument is more legitimate, If your ADC builds the Anti Tank item, or anti sustain item. And the enemy ADC can get away with a greedy choice. Your ADC will get out dueled by the enemy. This may not be a problem when everyones grouped up. But I can't afford to build anti tank while I'm still laning. (cause you know, I'm not fighting the tank when laning)

and the other problem is that the ADC is inevitably the only one who really can counter the sustain tank. Forcing your team to play "protect the carry." (Might not be what you had in mind if your a split pushing jax)

Really that would make balance more difficult. Regen is kind of a unique form of tankyness. If it doesn't have a unique counter, it will simply run away snowball if the sustain tank gets ahead.

As for morrello's, it's kinda weird, yes it's not optimal on a number of Champs, But I don't think it should be. If the goal is to promote Morrelo's as a counter to sustain, it should have a significant opportunity cost. And yet it's still the optimal choice on many other mages. Then again, Morrello's only procs on 35% HP or less, so it many not actually be a clear counter to sustain tanks.

Also, would that include removing it from Ignite? if it did, it would make ignite the single most useless summoner in the game. Or if it's the only source of GW, then your only opportunity to counter the sustain tank is in champ select. (Which would be a problem in a blind pick or blind draft)

Lastly. Sustain tanks arn't the only class of champs counter balanced by GW. It was also adjusted to try and counter sustain supports. (Cause raka is bananas) Their would be way more re balancing needed than just the sustain tanks.

Uh... I'm pretty sure that since the Mage Update, it's one of the best mage items. Not even taking Grievous Wounds into account. It's still got a whopping 100 AP, 400 Mana, 20% Cooldown Reduction, and will restore 20% of your Max mana when you get a kill or assist.
