If you support, please buy sightstone

its very essential and crucial for you to ward. Im not saying other people shouldn't ward, but we need a sightstone on the team.

If your support doesn't buy a sightstone, simple solution; BUY A YELLOW UPGRADE It's not that hard. Some supports do better without a sightstone since it has another item slot that they could use. If 2/3 teammates grab a yellow upgrade, one grabs a pink upgrade and the support (and a second person) gets a red trinket and upgrades, you'll actually be fine.

I never see people upgrade their trinkets in any of my games, unless I mention to do so. It helps a ton to upgrade them.

Constantly available pink ward? Yes, please. Two recharging wards? GIMME.

For the low, low price of 250G, you too can have a slight advantage if the enemy doesn't upgrade! Buy your upgrades today!

so yeah, tell me how anyone would think to ward in a game?

NoMonku3 votes

This is a possible solution, but imo it isn't a good one for early game. You can't get an upgraded yellow trinket until 9 and also I feel certain champions/roles(ADC/squishy mids) are poor choices to have yellow trinkets on later in the game. Having your damage venture forth to grant vision is a poor use of their power when the tanks should be leading the charge into the FOG imo.

Even if you are buying additional wards early game as a support, you are still saving a lot of money (and slots) over getting SS.

Not to mention you lose the power of vision denial--if a support buys upgraded yellow trinket, they don't have that red trinket to deny vision to the other team, which is often just as important as providing vision for your own team.

But a pink ward can destroy normal wards, and therefore still deny Vision? It's slower but actually more effective since you probably have a low attack speed and if no one helps you have enough time to clean up any wards that are in the area (IE the multiple ward trick used on Barons)

NoMonku2 votes

Upgraded sweeper can clear WAY more then a pink ward can. The only time pink wards are better then sweepers is if they have stealth champions or if you can control that area.

AbiwonKenabi2 votes

As NoMonku said, a sweeper can clear far more than a pink ward can. You can only have one pink ward for a total of 5(that's assuming everyone on the team buys one which is really rare) and they are much more expensive. I can admit that pink wards are extremely useful, especially when denying vision to dragon/baron while you do it, but they still pale in comparison to the coverage you can get with a red trinket, particularly when it's upgraded and you have mobility boots.

Apollocliptic1 votes

Fair enough, I like to carry an upgraded yellow for the free Pink, but usually because no one else on my team has upgraded their trinkets and I am just trying to cover as much ground as possible as the support, but it's worth noting those key differences

Apollocliptic2 votes

SO you're saying that because you're a mid laner you should not ward!?!? Because Mid is the easiest to gank you should be warding second most or third (after jungle). You don't have to be at the front to ward, place a ward over a wall, or behind you when pushing. Only time not to upgrade a yellow to double, is when upgrading to pink, like against LB or if there's another steal champ on the enemy team

NoMonku4 votes

I don't remember saying that. For me on my mid's I prefer to get a sweeper later. Plus I actually BUY wards, so I don't need the trinket. As for ADC I prefer to get Scrying Orb because it allows me to get vision of objectives if my team isn't/can't ward. Yellow Trinket isn't bad, I just say it is a poor trinket to have on your damage champions because in the scenarios where your team is losing, which is when it is hardest to ward, you just want to go out as far as you are willing and place the ward. A tanky champion or non damage dealer is better suited to this role instead of your primary damage(ADC/Mid) because even IF they tank dies, you still at least have a chance to fight.

Apollocliptic1 votes

OK, fair enough, your phrasing sounded like damage dealers shouldn't ward, but rereading it, you specifically are only talking about yellow trinkets. I still think it's useful for everyone to have wards, I agree, damage dealers shouldn't "venture out" to ward, but like I said, you can ward lanes, over walls, or in brush as you pass them to protect your rear, while key areas or more dangerous areas are warded by jungle and support (as sightstone wards last longer anyway, it is ideal to use proper wards not trinket wards on objectives and junctions) But overall I see your point, ultimately it's situational, but I think a lot of these posts aim to addresses the fact that many still don't upgrade either trinket, and even flame that there's not enough wards (even when the support has placed 3 or 4 with pink) but they themselves are not contributing. I do mention having vision against stealth enemies, but I withdraw my original criticism

Marthian1 votes

Seriously this. There just isn't a reason not to upgrade yellow trinket if you are sticking with it.

RedCyclone4 votes

but there are supports in the game who couldn't care less about getting more health, Soraka gets screwed for buying it, Sona gets her AP behind when buying it, same with Karma Some support's do not just want this thing stinking up their inventory slot, yeah the wards are helpful, but at times it seems like a better idea to get the yellow trinket upgrade when you can remind your teammates too that it exists

we really need sightstones with other stats

LegitBacon661 votes

It would be cool if only supports can put sighstone in their trinket slot or something idk

AbiwonKenabi3 votes

Sightstone's benefits out weigh any negative you could come up with. If you are support and you build AD or whatever, I couldn't care less as long as you have Sightstone and red trinket(And use them ofc). The support's primary role on the team (other than the obvious "babysit the ADC") is to provide any utility a given team may need. Teams ALWAYS need vision and vision denial.

Not to say other teammates can't ward as well--they SHOULD--but Support does a good chunk of the warding along with Jungle.

Scarlet Firefly3 votes

It's not only the support's job to ward you know. They can't roam the entire Rift and ward it and at the same time be there for their ADC. It doesn't hurt to buy a Stealth Ward once in a while, even if you are ADC. It's only 75 Gold and also you can upgrade your trinket. It's fast, effective and saves lives.

Narsicus2 votes

Sightstone is a good item, I get it on many of the supports I play including Thresh, Braum, and Leona.

That being said it is most certainly NOT required, and when I play more caster-y supports like Sona I rarely get it.

You can easily maintain vision by simply purchasing wards and effectively using (and upgrading!) your trinket and with vision wards you can still have vision control of important intersections as well as objectives as long as you carry them on you.

Honestly by simply upgrading your ward trinket you can maintain a 3 ward uptime, It hurts me to see my teammates at levels 10+ running around with the base trinket when spending 250g could massively improve the vision our team has available to them.

Sorry if that was a little ranty but the number of times people have complained at me for not buying a sightstone when I have out the maximum number of wards and am basically the only person warding is truly astounding.

Save a life, upgrade your trinket today.

Apollocliptic1 votes

I agree about trinkets, but don't you save money by buying sightstone regardless, even if you end up selling it once you have full build (supports tend not to FB until quite late) the number of wards you should be buying + trinket (which only lasts a minute and makes warding harder cause u need to roam more) seems like a sightstone that you sell (for like 300 gold) is worth more still

That said, I play lulu and still buy sightstone and sometime vision ward trinket, everyone should be warding but you can never have too many to be honest, and I'm pretty sure that, except some rare scenarios, having more wards on the support, even if they're a caster is more important than having the extra dmg or support item (most, not always) Like yeah, supports without sightstone can trade better, but that's assuming you're controlling the fights and not roaming around, if your team always moves as 5 as I've seen in some games, you can afford to rely more on just trinket warding I guess

i like the yellow trinket better unless im playing a tank support. as a tank or bard ill get sightstone (on bard you are already leaving lane to get those chimes, so why not ward a bit too). but if im like nami or janna. nope.

I wish people warded more, rather than just relied on your trinket. Buy some wards, spend at least 75 gold every back. It's not fair to force a support to sink 800 gold early game when they're the lowest gold income on the team, especially if you're not willing to spend at least 500 in the first twenty minutes (including the trinket upgrade) on vision.

I'm really tempted to go on strike as a support, but the vision is necessary, but in reality everyone should be warding. And yes, that includes the adc.

LegitBacon661 votes

I think this is where riot should add different options of the sightstone like they did with jungler items.

Yes it is. Supports generally don't scale well with gold. And even if they do, your laners scale harder because they get items like item 3046 item 3089 to get more value out of AP items. Also the support is generally the lowest level champ in the team so the 200hp from sightstone actually helps you out a lot.

Aside from that, it's the support that has time to go on warding missions where they use both sightstone and upgraded sweeper. For the carries positioning for farming/combat is more important because if they're not at a teamfight you lose automatically.

OF COURSE laners and junglers should ward more. But that's no excuse to drag yourself down to their level and not get the SS + upgraded sweeper as soon as possible.

IcyPepper1 votes

Life isn't fair, and sightstone is a very necessary item.

I'm frustrated, I just want laners to ward more. That's all. So tired of games where I'm jungling and most of the map is blind. When supporting, I do my best to remedy it, but a sightstone can only do so much.

Nameless Voice1 votes

I like to build AP on my mage supports, but sightstone us just too good to give up. I usually don't buy it as my first item (preferring to rush a small mana item), since huge amounts of early vision isn't as important with the S5 jungle, but it's well with getting early on.

Sightstone lets you place lots of wards in quick session, to immediately replace destroyed wards, and to have a powerful red trinket or pink ward trinket. The trinket part is especially important, since not buying sightstone forces you to keep the yellow trinket for the entire game, and means less reds, blues or pinks on your team.

When I see the pros stop picking up a SS, in favor of the trinkets, then I will believe that the trinket is better. The pro's get payed to figure out the most efficient way of doing things, and supports are all about gold efficiency. Everyone on those teams upgrades their trinket and the supports still get SS.

DoFr1 votes

i cannot stress how important it is to take SS

i don't even complete my support item, nor do i buy boots, first buy is always, ALWAYS SS, and the switch to oracles

it saves your lane from roaming mids, and ganks, and let you know what is warded and what is not (so you can oracle it to set up a gank, or just get free gold)

EyesOfTheFox1 votes

I like to play Janna support and I actually prefer the item 2045, however I get blasted all the time because it's not the first item I buy. I always rush my item 3069 first. I also get blasted if I don't ward the river even if our lane is getting pushed super hard, sorry, I'm not gonna go get myself killed out in the open like that where their ADC can just pick me off. Also last I checked there's a creature in the jungle that is extremely easy to kill early game that gives sight to the WHOLE river. I'm not against warding but understand the circumstances of the lane before blasting support with ward demands.

ALL supports NEED to get a sightstone. they dont need it as their first item, but if your support hasn't purchased a sight stone by 20 min then they need to LTP
