An advice: Avoid playing ranked when Tahm Kench is released

YumaS2Astral··93 votes·8,445 views

As long as Riot doesn't address this problem, we will always have to wait one or two weeks before it is safe to play ranked.

This is because of those clueless players who buy a champion that was recently released (one day, two day since its release) and they test it on ranked.

This is a serious problem, because most of those players do not have knowledge of the champion's kit and what to build, and as such, they not only feed the enemy, but become useless during teamfights because they do not know what to do with the champion. Another reason is because it's not only the players themselves, their enemies do not know how to beat that champion, which champion counters it, etc. This is a problem especially if the champion is OP on release, that's what happened with Ekko and Zyra.

Finally, sometimes a champion is released with a lot of bugs, especially game-breaking ones. Azir was one of them, his release was delayed due to bugs, but even when he was released, he still had a lot of bugs.

You may say "this player may have an account on PBE and he has tested the champion" but the majority of players do not have an account on PBE, and even then, what has been released may be slighty different from what was on PBE during the testing time.

You may say "just ban the champion" but we are already as starved for bans as we are, since Riot doesn't increase the number of bans. The point is that, for example, the ban that I am wasting on Tahm Kench, I could have used for another champion that is more overpowered, such as Katarina, or Ekko, or Kalista. Worse yet, what happens if I want to play Twisted Fate, then I must ban Fizz because he is a hard counter to TF, but I can't because there is only one ban left and I must use it on Tahm Kench due to the risk of someone picking him and feeding? Also; I am not always the first pick, I can't always have the chance to ban Tahm Kench, and I am never sure if the first pick of my team or from the enemy team will ban him.

_I know that Riot disables free week champions on ranked for that exact reason. However, I wonder why Riot doesn't disable recently released champions for that exact reason. It doesn't need to be forever, a week or two; even three days would be sufficient. It is always the same thing, we always have to deal with those players who do not care for what the other people think, test champions on ranked, feed, and make us lose. _

Listen up, normally I'm just a lurker but this ticked me off.

The mere suggestion of this is ridiculous. While you do raise valid points, it does not make the proposed idea more credible. The main and foremost problem with this is that it accounts to all champions, not just newly released ones. As this might confuse you, I'll give you an example to clarify. Recently in my ranked team during championselect the last pick was forced to go support. They picked Morgana, a strong pick albeit slightly unreliable. In game however, the player playing Morgana admitted to not actually having played Morgana ever before.

We lost lane and lost game, but that's not really my point. My point is that there will ALWAYS be players that try out a champion that's new (to them) in ranked. So, banning a recently released champion from ranked play because players can't possibly have enough experience with said released champion is an invalid reason. Completely invalid in fact.

On the other hand, I agree that a player should have some 'forehand experience with a champion before playing it in ranked. Which is why I approve of the champion mastery so much, and I think that part of that champion mastery should be integrated into ranked play (where, for example, a player has to be at least level 1 or level 2 with 16 champions, instead of simply owning them).

Moving on to your other points, this time dissecting buggerinos. Yes, newly released champions may have gamebreaking bugs, but, in fact, Riot actually bans those champions once the bug has been discovered to avoid exploitation! So, banning the newly released champion by default will in fact have an OPPOSING effect, because the newly released champion will see less gameplay and thus the bug might take more time to be discovered, which in turn will cause it to be banned a few more days/weeks later on after its release simply because only then the bug had been found out. Another point you made is, when you keep this in mind, invalid.

I wasn't planning on writing this huge a paragraph, but while I'm on it let me just continue. Another point you made is that enemies do not know how to play against newly released champion (we'll name him Bob). Bob is so strong that he'll easily 1 v 5 the enemy team, score pentakill after pentakill and pushes turrets down solo. Bob has a winrate of 100% and even if afk carries the game with it's passive or whatever makes the champion so strong. Because of this, Bob should be banned from ranked play. Well, in fact Bob should, but not by Riot. Bob is a champion the enemy team can't play against, or doesn't know how to play against. What do you do with champions you do not know how to play against? Exactly: you ban them during championselect. That is precisely what those bans are for. Not to ban just any "OP" champion. There are currently way too many champions that are strong, solid picks (as defined as OP by you(as said by you)) and there is just no way to ban them all. So what champions DO you ban? Why, the champions you absolutely do not want to play against. And not just every new release might bring a champion you absolutely do not want to play against, champion reworks, nerfs and buffs actually do this too.

So is it a ban wasted on a newly released champion? No. Maybe the patch in which Bob is released will bring a far superior threat to your or enemy team as well, and Bob wouldn't be the priority to ban, despite the fact that nobody knows how to play Bob or how to play against Bob.

Enough with the analogy. You raised a seemingly valid point concerning the amount of bans. As I said earlier, there's a huge pool of champions both viable and strong that would be nice not to play against, especially if they counter you or if you don't know how to counter them. So, 3 bans per team might have seemed reasonable when there were 40 champs, but now that there's triple that amount you might say that that isn't reasonable any more. While there does seem to be some logic in that, there's actually an underlying reason as to why it isn't that bad to still be stuck with 3 bans per team. The sole reason is that both teams actually have the same amount of bans (yes really!) during championselect. This makes it so that both teams have a chance to actually pick one of those so called "overpowered" champions, and thus it becomes balanced again.

But Vaatzes I want to play xxx champion that's completely out of the meta and irrelevant and in a position that xxx shouldn't be played! I'm sorry pal, but there's a whole bookwork somewhere out there as to why you CAN play xxx, but why it might be a bad idea. I'm not going to expand more on this other than saying: yes, there IS a meta and yes this makes some champions more viable or less viable.

You also made some points about having to ban specific champions and not being able to ban champions yourself all the time. Those points are plainly ridiculous and if asked I'll elaborate as to why they are. For now, let's just say that A: You can always counterplay every champion if you're skilled enough (unless you're playing at challenger level), so there's nobody forcing you to ban a specific champion, and B: there'll always be a person banning champions, ask them or hope they'll ban wisely. The enemy faces the same problem: they might not always ban the "right" champions, so it's still balanced.

Lastly, the paragraph written in italic is rather absurd. Riot removed free to play champions from ranked because of what exactly? That nobody knows how to play against them? That they might be bugged? That they will "have to be banned"? That players might not know how to play said champions?

Assuming it's the latter, it still makes little sense because of what I've said above. It might be the reason, but it's of little relevance. I could just buy a 450 IP champion and play it in ranked. There isn't really a difference. If you actually answered yes to one of those other questions: congrats, you're talking gibberish.

Thanks for reading all that, or if you didn't, look below. I'd be VERY pleased to hear any reply every one of you has to this, and what you think about the points I made. So long folks!

TL;DR: ALMOST ALL POINTS MADE BY OP ARE FAKENGAI (bear little relevance, have little logic or are complete nonsense). NEWLY RELEASED CHAMPIONS SHOULD NOT BE BANNED.

Pretty much all that, except the "they might be bugged" part. When you have free to play champions avaliable for ranked, the risk of someone picking something that they have never played before is a lot higher. I've read an thread made by a Rioter explaining that they made a research which resulted into the conclusion that matches with free week champions are a lot more likely to result into a loss.

Also, yes, any champion that anyone has never played before can be picked into ranked. However, when a champion has recently been released, it is pretty obvious that nobody knows how to play that champion, save for those small amount of players that played him on PBE. So, banning a recently released champion from ranked plays is very obvious solution, and while it may not solve the entire problem of people picking champs that they never played before into ranked, it solves part of this problem.

Vaatzes3 votes

Free to play champions have been around a long time, so people (should) know how to play against them. They won't "have to be banned" because, reasonably speaking, you should be prepared to ban 3 out of all 100 - something champions. The last part actually does make sense, but that doesn't mean that they're BANNED. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Mandang03 votes

I think the point is that if free week champions are LESS of an unknown than the new champ, but Riot keeps free week champs out of ranked, then they should also be keeping new champs out of ranked. Whichever reason Riot chooses for keeping free week champs out applies even moreso for new champs.

CIit Yeastwood1 votes

Free to play champs are technically "owned" by everyone for the week. This would mean a new player would constantly have about HALF of the requirements to play ranked.... No bueno.

I think you can start to see why free rotations are banned, and new champions are not. I mean, frankly, just get over it. People are going to have to learn to play with and against Tahm or ANY new champion anyways. Who really cares if it was in a ranked game or not.

Mandang02 votes

Actually, no, I can't see that at all. Care to explain beyond just saying so?

The relevant point is whether a player has experience playing their champ in ranked. While Riot prevents us from playing free week champs because we might not have played them before that week, it's a guarantee these players haven't played the new champ before that week. "But what if they bought the new champ and have been practicing them?" Well, they could just as easily have been practicing the free week champ - there's no difference between the cases & I can't see why one is banned while the other isn't.

Why is ranked so special? Well, you tell me. Why shouldn't players be able to use free week champions in ranked if ranked is no different than any other queue? After all, "people are just going to have to learn to play with and against" those champions (even if played by someone who has no clue what they're doing)...right?

CIit Yeastwood1 votes

I see you are still up in a hissy fit "just because new". Quite adorable.

Allowing free rotation champions into ranked allows players with smaller champion pools to get into ranked. Smaller champion pools have the potential to get banned out. Smaller champion pools are generally people that haven't been playing too long, excluding the smurfs. This would mean allowing lesser skilled people into ranked games potentially throwing a giant wrench in the system (I've had people playing their first ranked games ever in my climb through Gold 1, so yes, it happens.)

Two reasons right there to not let free to play champions into ranked.

I'm still waiting for any logic to leave your fingertips, and I guess I'll be waiting all night since all you seem to care about, again, is "because it's new." Anything that you continue to copy/paste with new words has already been torn to shreds by multiple people in this thread. Just give it up already.

Mandang01 votes

There's no emotion here, I'm just struggling to see how you can view the two situations differently. In fact, given the tone of your posts, I'd have to say you're the one who's upset.

You want to keep players out of ranked based on the likelihood that they won't know how to play their champ - I get that! What I'm saying is that there's ALSO a really high likelihood that they don't know how to play the champ that they couldn't have played up until that week (the new champ). I don't think any of this is unreasonable to state, so can you explain why you disagree with it? Are you just mad that someone would take away your fun of being able to play the champ in ranked the first week it's out? You can just say so instead of lashing out, you know...

DrCyanide6 votes

If I recall right, the LCS rules ban newly released or reworked champions from competitive play for 1 week. Why not at least extend that restriction to ranked?

Ariel the Cruel3 votes

I thought LCS updates were delayed.

They are delayed one week, and then they delay using the champions for an additional week (or is it two? I can't remember).

your main argument is, if its the same for both teams then it is fair. Your argument is valid and I get your point. But change does not happen with your mindset. More bans for both teams, and a week waiting period on any reworked or newly released champion on ranked does not seem too unreasonable, I do not understand why this post made you so angry.

Tobos1 votes

VAATEZ,

I'm usually a lurker but found the need to correct you. Your rebuttal is not logical. There are **many reasons **why people choose to ban, and they each have their merits. The OP says one of his reasons for banning is because he wants people to play champions they're experienced with in ranked. Valid, and you don't dispute that reasoning.

Instead, you dispute his methodology. Your rebuttal is that** inexperience can apply to any champion**, therefore his reasoning is invalid.

This is illogical. You are assuming that because we lack 100% certainty, newly released champions are just as likely to net an inexperienced player as all others. To put it simply, you assume that since we cannot eliminate the chances of someone playing a champ the first time, all attempts will yield either identical or unknown improvements in likelihood.

Common sense tells us this is not true. The OP points out that a relatively few players are on the PBE. Therefore, if my priority was to make it most probable that everyone plays a champion they're experienced with, the obvious ban is the champion released this week, simply because, all other variables unknown, that champ has the highest probability by far of netting an inexperienced player, even for modest criterions (say, 20 games played). As the OP mentioned, we should wait 1-2 weeks.

TLDR: You may point out that there are other reasons to ban, and those may have their merits, too. But if your first imperative is to make sure people play only champs they're experienced with, **the most statistically logical ban **is the champion that's been out for less than a week. That is certainly not invalid.

Its not a problem Riot should be addressing. Its no different from people playing a champ they dont know in ranked, which happens often with people who have no mains and arent really good with anyone.

Riot shouldnt be changing the game JUST because people make poor desicions.

I'd rather they force people to ward somehow, prevent people from overextending, any number of other dumb things I'd rather see changed (not really but you get my point.

Sure avoid ranked if you want to, but preventing a new champ from being in ranked is silly.

i have two different views on this. On one hand, yes, its nice to not have someone brand new at a champion play it in ranked. It can either be devastating since you dont know the champions abilities, or the person can suck with them.

On the other hand, my performance with every new champion is pretty much the same for the first 50 games. All i really do is read the abilities and see what skill order is the best, and i can play any champ to a point where id have to spam dozens of games to get any real improvement. Case in Point - my yasuo/zed/ekko are just as bad after a dozen games as the first time i played them. Even after a dozen games, I miss the same skillshots that i missed the first time i played them. Braum/Velkoz - those were easy for me to pick up and i feel that i can play them in ranked fine, even though ive only played each a couple times.

going to the free week champions, theres a difference in situations. If you only have 16 champions including the free week, you can be forced to play a champion you never played before. (it also gives a weird situation where depending on the number of free week champs you own, you can meet the requirements of playing ranked on one week but not the next). On the other hand, you choose to play a new champ. I mean, nobodys guaranteeing that the Jinx on your team has played Jinx before, but they chose to try out the champ in a ranked game. Youre not being backed into a corner to play a champion you dont know how to play - you willingly accept the risk that you might suck with the champ.

The point is that, for example, the ban that I am wasting on Tahm Kench, I could have used for another champion that is more overpowered, such as Katarina, or Ekko, or Kalista.

Katarina = 50% ish win rate Kalista = 50% ish win rate Ekko = 42% ish win rate

Kalista is being nerfed. Ekko was nerfed to trash tier.

Tahm is coming out at the same time as the AP item rework, devourer rework, and runeglaive buff. You need to question the validity of all your bans.

Anyway, if you don't feel comfortable facing or playing with a new champ, ban them. At least that ban would make more sense than your current list.

Now that the mastery system is in place, Riot actually has an easy solution in their hands not just from new champions but across the board. Put a minimum mastery level requirement for players to be able to pick champions in ranked. It is really not fair to a team if someone is trying out or learning a champion for the first time in ranked. There is no reason or excuse for a player to not play a handful of normal/blind/builder matches on a champion first. Such system would actually encourage players to practice more and get the basic down of a wider range of champions. It wouldn't have to be high, just like level 3 mastery or something.

I always thought that it would be nice if people couldnt' play champs in ranked unless they have uhmmm at least 10 games played with it (that is okay even for recently-30 lvl players because most of them play at least 10 games using at least 10 champs till that lvl). So they couldn't just go and buy champ to immediately pick it in rankeds "cuz OMG IT'S SO OP I SAW IT ON YOUTUBE LETT ME CARRY U" So it isn't the Tahm Kench issue, it's overall system that allows you to play champ in ranked if you just bought it.

Last game, some guy picked Tahm Kench into Yasuo. Needless to say, he fed, and died a whole ton. This was not the case with ekko, where if someone picked ekko they could be either good or bad. Every single game i played on any of my accounts, the games where we had a tahm kench, we lost.

This is just punishing people who can learn for those who cant learn or other teammates who see a new champions and they cant learn effectively and leave the guy with the new champion out to die. because they need 15 games to know a champions mechanics when most champions have mechanics that other champions have just with slight tweaks people look at them as completely new skills. you cant personally gauge what a person knows about a champion by how much games they have played with it or how long the champion has been out. Only by playing with them and honestly saying that you didnt leave a guy because you saw him as trolling because he picked a new champion and disregard all other plays and habits he has
