Orianna Just a Little Too Strong

AShortJoke··2 votes·2,527 views

Every champion in League has clear weaknesses that can be exploited so as to limit that champion's effectiveness in game. Orianna's main weakness seems to be that she is immobile. However, with flash, ghost, a shield, her ultimate, and her slow/move speed steroid, not to mention her relatively long range, her kit on its own provides her with enough mobility that its just a little too easy for her to escape. Now, because she is immobile, Riot has seen fit to bless her kit with decent damage in the early/mid game, and absurd damage and team fight potential late game. Yes, she is a skill-shot oriented champion, but her fairly long range mixed with a large enough hitbox on her q and aoe on her w and ultimate make landing her abilities somewhat too easy. There are obviously other mage champions with easier to land abilities that arguably provide more consistent damage for the team. However, these champions tend to have weaknesses more exploitable than Orianna. To sum things up, no one thing about Orianna's kit is overpowered, but when you add everything up, it becomes a champion who is consistently top tier in professional play, very strong in casual play, and who is seemingly immune to the nerfbat. Champions are supposed to have trade-offs built into them that prevent them from being to good at everything, but in my opinion Orianna is the exception to this rule. She is just a little too good at everything.

I have been hearing a lot more about this as of late. I think the next thing they will do to her is a nerf. This might take a month or 6 months

She is a consistent ban but is a late game champ. By shutting her down early game you will make her useless

lol she's not a late game champion, she's a lane bully. She's the renekton of midlane. Ok maybe that's an exaggeration, but it's pretty close to the truth. Late game you want, Azir, Veigar, Vladimir, Karthus, cassiopeia. Her Ult keeps her relevant lategame, but her winrate decreases as the game length continues. The fact is, a shockwave (unless you happen to hit two carries just right) at the 25 min mark is a lot more impactful than one at the 60 min mark when everyone has itemized correctly, or unless your team comp has "wombo combo" synergy, like an MF or yasuo to follow up. Shutting her down early doesn't really make her useless at all, cause if you set up a good ult, as long as it can be followed up on even if you didn't do that much damage, it has a big impact. Shielding allies, speeding them up slowing enemies down, none of that really depending on whether your 0/18 or 18/0 still impactful even if you shut her down. Utility is utility, cc is cc.

You beat her by being better than her. She's mostly skillshots and has a delay on ult, she's a fair champion so all you have to do is dodge and avoid her ult and you win. Which is why she's rarely banned in soloQ games. She's not one of those champions where, if your teamcomp doesn't have CC, or splitpusher, or hard enage, or some other component it's gg. She has a little bit of everything but master of nothing you just need to play better and you'll win. She's not like Yi or yasuo or tryndamere or hypercarries that if fed lategame, and they appear in front of you, without cc you're likely dead in 0.85 seconds with 2300 damage dealt.

calling her the 'renekton' of midlane is definitely inaccurate. Orianna is a SAFE laner who can waveclear and hold her own in most matchups, and can be a lane bully versus CERTAIN matchups, but she's far from a true bully laner. She's not naturally strong early in the game the way yasuo and renekton are - you need to be ahead enough and have enough vision control to be able to play further up and zone them off the wave with your ball. Renekton also doesn't scale well in to the late game, whereas orianna at least scales pretty well. Whoever said she's a jack of all trades said it best: she's safe, scales, has teamfight synergy, utility, lane control potential, and excellent waveclear.

shockwave is a blisteringly punishing ability to land late in the game, when fights can end very quickly and one mistake can cost the game. Landing a good ulti makes her seem very good lategame, and if you can't land one, someone's probably going to blow you up.

Did you continue reading? I said it was an exaggeration. It was a hyperbolic joke to get my point across. She's not one of those late game scaling mages that you can easily abuse early game like Viktor before his first hexcore upgrade. If anything most of her match ups if played well she's capable of either abusing or playing safe and usually in the cases where she has to play safe she outscales. And while, yes she does scale with items - her ratios aren't terrible- they certainly aren't the best. If you are playing specifically for late game there are several mages you'd want other than Orianna because she falls of in RELATIVE damage to other late game mages. What keeps her relevant late game is the ultimate. Which is why i made the Renekton comparison. Early game a bully but relevant lategame from high base damage and tankiness (with the right itemization), providing something for the team even though his moment has passed. She's not as binary as renekton of course which is why I called her a jack of all trades, she has some utility, some burst, some sustained damage using autos and an amazing ultimate. But people keep thinking she's a late game champion, she really isn't. That was my point. She's early - mid game and she falls off after.

you said it was MAYBE a BIT of an exaggeration and then qualified that by saying "but it's pretty close to the truth" that's a lot like saying it wasn't much of an exaggeration at all

but it is an exaggeration - a huge one

i'm the one who upvoted your post by the way so it's not like i didn't read the fucking thing i just think the renekton comparison is inappropriate

consistent ban? since when

The main issue I notice when playing Ori is that, especially in low ranking and unranked queues, many people don't know how to play against her because she is not a very popular champion in these games. I laned against a mastery 7 Yas a few games ago as Ori and he kept walking right near my ball and i w'd him constantly, and he didn't understand how he was losing health. Her mechs can be intimidating for first time players as well, so she does take a certain amount of skill and practice to master. I have seen more Orianna's feed the **** out of the enemy team than i have seen do well/carry. When fed early and with the right build, Ori can carry a team on her back and she is very useful in team fights because of her r and w combo. Cooldowns early game are Ori's weakness, so exploit these as much as possible when laning against her. You can feed on her when her mana is low early game and it is very easy to jump her as jg if her ball is away from her because it takes a second for it to travel to her, so you can destroy her with a well placed stun. Ori is difficult because, like you said, she can become very powerful in a short amount of time due to her ability combos, but if you shut her down early game then she will be a consistent source of gold and kills for your entire team when playing against her.

I think that is it. She is actually sub 50 in all ranks except bronze. Orianna is a lane bully vs other low elo pub stompers so people will complain.

i can't believe this thread is actually happening

the thing is though that ori is extremely easy to deal with if your team coordinates correctly

I also have been having issues with Orianna lately. It has to do with ball placement. Either the radius of her ball is too much or she can simply move it too often. Regardless I find anytime I get hit by it it instantly detonates via her Q and I have an auto attack hitting me for her thunderlord to go off. It's just really, really offensive zoning and I think it could be toned down.
