@Riot why did you remove the ability to let us spectate high elo games?

I know this has been gone for awhile, but I still miss it. For those of you who don't know, there used to be a thing in the client where you could choose from several high elo games (usually diamond or higher) to spectate. Anyways, I'm just curious why this was removed and if there's a chance it will ever be brought back.

It cut into their profits because people would watch that instead of things riot was pushing.

from what i can see you can only spec people in masters+ in client. if it existed as far as diamond thats kinda cool

I might be mistaken about the diamond part. I just remember they were always high elo games. To be fair though master and grandmaster weren't around when this was a thing, so people in challenger often got paired with diamond players.

Back in season 5 Diamond was a big thing but these days, Diamond is considered low elo. Don't get me wrong, these players are good but they aren't that much better than Gold players. Diamond players just have a more consistent performance than Gold players. If you're looking for high elo games then Masters and up is where you want. The difference between a Diamond 4 player and a Master player is much much larger than the difference between a Diamond and a Gold player.

If you want to spectate Diamond games, you might as well just spectate the Gold players on your friend list. You're gonna see basically the same gameplay.

You can still spectate high-level play, but you have to go to your profile, then look at ranked, then choose a ranked leaderboard, scroll through the list of names until you see one with an "eye" icon, and then right-click and choose "spectate." You can't see how far along the match is, nor what champions people are playing. Riot would much rather you consume these matches as "esports," meaning watching a video stream and putting up with ads, endorsements, and so on.

You can now spectate every single game downloading the game in profiles lol

Too many people tried to friendrequest the players in those games (me included).

You're always to spec my games, but I doubt you'll learn anything, my games are a fiasco XD

A while? The last time I saw this was in season 5. 4 years is not what I'd consider a while.

Frankly, we don't need it anymore. I mean just use any site like LeagueOfGraphs or op.gg, find any high elo player you want, log in on an account on the same server as the player, look up their match history from the client and you can download the replay of any of the last 20 ranked games played on the current patch.

It was a positive feature.

the spectate faker tiltfest, as titled by thorin.

faker's stream owners, ie the people that own his streaming contract (not SKT), got upset about a youtube channel/twitch channel that used the spectate feature to watch all of fakers games. there was some language kerfuffle for the law to mull over and POV issues i.e. we don't get to see faker's inputs from the spectator, but that shit spooked riot because when it get's to court that's bad publicity or whatever, so they got rid of it and now you can only view live games of accounts in your friends list, so faker would have to opt in to the spectate faker account.

ofc this doesn't touch on replays being uploaded independently, but of course those replays are never live games. also the owner of said spectate stream was making money off it, they deny it themselves but hey youtube money was bigger back then before the adpocalypse and i wouldn't blame them lol.

Aside from that issue, pretty much everyone at high elo hated this feature. We got spammed with friend requests from people spectating our games 24/7.
