"We removed Akali's MR and Armor from her shroud because it was invisible power"

Meanwhile Graves gets over double what she got just by dashing around while at the same time being ranged. Doesn't even include the damage reduction he gets from PD or the burst reduction he gets from Death's Dance. lul

Except that is not why they removed the bonus resistances:

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/patch/patch-418-notes

Akali's one of those champions who, when she gets ahead, completely circumvents her meaningful weaknesses by having extra resistances from Twilight Shroud. A fed Akali ultimately turns into a bruiser-assassin Akali who hops into a fight, tanks out damage in Twilight Shroud, and then continues to obliterate the squishies. Rather than removing her defensive mechanics completely, we wanted to focus Akali's skills on more ninja-y things, hence the heavier focus on sneaking and agility. This also allows us to reinforce the proper counterplay to Akali (reveal her in stealth and beat her up), give her better themed mechanics, all while reiterating her focus on opportunistic assassinations. Up front: this is meant to be an overall nerf, but we hope Akali players will be more focused on the cool plays they can make with this new mechanic.

I'm not saying Grave's bonus E resistances shouldn't be nerfed btw. But the reasoning isn't (and shouldn't be) "invisible power." The reasoning is that it is making him way too tanky for the damage he can dish out.

Akali is SO HOT6 votes

Invisible power is something champions get that is not apparent to the other team. Her free resists she got from her shroud were definitely not apparent to the other team and it was quite frustrating having her turn into a bruiser out of nowhere because she was in her shroud. They don't have to explicitly state it was invisible power for it to actually be invisible power.

13743427 votes

But that is not why they got rid of it. They got rid of it because it was making her too tanky, which is an issue when she is an assassin whose primary counterplay is she is suppose to be squishy. She was becoming "brusier" like without actually really building like a bruiser.

Also I believe that she only had the resitances in the shroud, as soon as she left it she immediately lost them (e.g., there was no decay over time like with her current ms buff).

And is exactly what we see on Graves being a bruiser without building like one, because he has free resists with no visibility and it's up 100% of the time, rather than having windows of up time.

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. The invisible power was her turning into a bruiser because of her free resists which is the exact problem with Graves only he gets over 2 times as much as she did while being high damage and ranged. He can go full glass cannon and still be a stupidly good bruiser because of his resists from E.

More seriously, the top comment already debunks your OP, but when you "quote" Riot, try to actually quote them and not invent your own ideas... And when your lie is exposed, don't try to explain you were right all along about invisible power. Because 1) you're not right and 2) even if it was invisible power, that's still not the reason it was removed.

Meritas2 votes

Having a cloaking ability boost your raw defences is kinda bs anyway.

Spaceman5pff2 votes

To be fair, it makes sense as a design choice. If you have a limited space to be stealthed in, some extra resists should help you avoide needing to leave to get out of AOE.

Basically it was a tool to help her not get cheesed out of her shroud by AOE spells. Great in theory, terrible in practice.

JustMyBassCannon3 votes

I didn't know Graves became invisible with E--Oh, wait, no. All it does otherwise is a dash and a single shell reload. It doesn't protect him from being targeted.

Fondling Gems5 votes

It grants resistances. Invisible power is power that it isn't obvious a champ has, stats that clearly some people aren't aware exist are invisible power.

JustMyBassCannon5 votes

But there's a marker on the champion for how many stacks of True Grit he has active. It's not "invisible" if the game fucking tells you.

What, do you want a Rammus W ball on him?

Fondling Gems5 votes

You don't get how invisible power works do you? Akali W used to have invisible power because it granted resistances. Sure you would know she had those resistances if she was in it but it was invisible power because it wasn't clear that the ability was specifically doing that.

Graves E has invisible power in the same way because you can hit him with a skillshot and see it do X amount of damage. later on in a fight you could jump on him and hit him for only a fraction of that damage because he has stacks of true grit that he didn't have before. It isn't obvious power because it is just a stat that isn't being obviously shown and the amount of resistances it is granting isn't obviously shown. Rammus W on the other hand is clearly a defensive ability that is obviously apparent, especially since the majority of what it does is grant a massive stat boost for a short duration, people know exactly what it does. In comparison when you tried to describe everything Graves E does you never mentioned it's resistances because it isn't something you think about. That is invisible power.

JustMyBassCannon6 votes

Does that make Jax's passive and Jinx's Q passive invisible power as well, then?

They both build up stacks of a stat that only becomes obvious when you see them in a fight, and they can build up to full power without you seeing them first.

But, oh, that doesn't count because it's not defensive stat buildup, right?

Nagoh Shan3 votes

No, that's invisible power too.

They just tend to accept some versions better than others, or use the phrase too liberally when removing features.

Teridax683 votes

I'd say attack speed is probably one of the most visible instances of a stat steroid you can have, since you can immediately see exactly how fast a champion is attacking. Movement speed and health are visible power in that respect as well. By contrast, resists are difficult to appreciate even when you're attacking someone, since you can't really calculate how much damage is being reduced on the fly. That doesn't mean we can't have damage reduction effects, but we do need them to be displayed more clearly.

JustMyBassCannon3 votes

That is a perfectly fair assessment. Although AS is still only visible once combat has begun, it is seen a few fractions of a second before stats like AD, AP, Armor or MR.

And I would have no problem with making those steroids have more visible indicators.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

You can see changes in resistances INSTANTLY when that champion takes damage. Try to think about this: Rammus W - Defensive Ball Curl: Is an EXTREMELY powerful defensive tool, as such, it is EXTREMELY visible to correctly communicate the power of the steroid. Malphite Passive: Is a moderately powerful / slightly weak defensive tool depending on the situation. However, the visuals tied to it are VERY noticeable, to the point of over-communicating the power of the effect.

This needs to be kept in mind when talking about changes to True Grit. If True Grit is made to be TOO visibly apparent, it can become a daunting visual, dissuading players from taking fights they can actually win. While this does mostly affect newer players, the same can be said for most clarity issues.

Teridax681 votes

My complaint was that there is no consistent way of communicating resistances: sure, Rammus has this special graphic that shows that he's currently benefiting from Defensive Ball Curl, but you can't just give every champion their own bonus resist graphic, and that doesn't even begin to cover bonus resists through items. By contrasts, shields and bonus health are very visible because you can see exactly how much a champion has of either on their health bar. Even if you took away Malphite's rock on/rock off skins, you'd still get to see exactly when his passive is up and how strong it is.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that we need a way of displaying resistances that is a) universal (so you'd be able to see any champion's resists based on the same kind of information), b) scalable (you'd get to see any champion's resists, but that wouldn't crowd out other kinds of information), c) visible (you'd get to immediately see a champion's bonus resists) and d) intuitive (you'd get a good idea of how much of either resistance type/damage reduction a champion has at a glance). In the case of True Grit, the solution doesn't need to be a fancy graphic, it just needs to pump up whichever information is on display to convey Graves's physical and magic damage reduction. I completely agree with you that champion-specific graphics are not the way to go, and that we need a way to make resists visible without overloading players with dozens of different information types on the fly.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

What we need, is a way to see EXACTLY how much damage all other champions will do, to any given target, under any given circumstances, in real time.

I should be able to know if I am going to win a fight even when I am playing a champion I am completely unfamiliar with, because me having to learn how the game works is too much and I want to be spoonfed.

Like seriously, I get you want clarity, but you don't need to go this far. What else do you want, the creeps to light up when they are low enough to last-hit, and numbers to appear above them indicating the order in which they will die? BECAUSE I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO USE MY BRAIN TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MANAGE A CREEP WAVE

Teridax681 votes

{quoted}

This is based on the assumption that the outcome of any fight in League is predetermined on the sole basis of both participants' DPS and effective health, without factoring any kind of interaction or mastery of either champion, which is ridiculous. By that rationale, we wouldn't need to display health or resource bars either, because that would be "spoonfeeding" players by supplying them with information.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for more clarity when it comes to displaying resistances, since currently the only way you can measure them is by clicking a champion and reading their portrait, which is definitely not the kind of thing you'd be doing in the middle of heated combat. Health alone isn't sufficient to indicate how durable a champion is, and resistances are just as important in indicating a champion's true tankiness. To reiterate the original point, currently any form of resistances comes off as invisible power, since it's not immediately appreciable, and damage reduction needs to be displayed better in order for that to no longer be the case.

{quoted}

I think that might actually be a brilliant idea for easing new players into the game. Last-hitting is integral to the laning phase, and the game gives no real indication as to what creep wave management is, why it's important ,or how to do it, which is one of the reasons why so many players still don't have the best grasp of it. If the game's tutorial resources had a guide and visual aides on how/why/when to control creep waves, it would be of immense help to a lot of people trying to make sense of the game's complex ruleset.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Oh gosh, it appears I forgot my /s and now you are triggered.

Teridax681 votes

Well no, it was clear you were trying to be sarcastic, it just so happens that one of your sarcastic solutions happened to be interesting and potentially worth adding to the game as a learning device. Your other point was that we shouldn't display resistances because it would be "spoonfeeding" players, which as I pointed out above, isn't really a good argument.

Generally, I'm not really a fan of difficulty for difficulty's sake, especially when that difficulty has nothing to do with proper core gameplay. League's best difficulty comes from making choices that depend on your allies and opponents, i.e. human components, as that creates potentially near-unlimited depth and allows players to constantly improve just by making a good decision in the next game. On the other hand, mechanics like last-hitting while alone in the lane, or clicking on an enemy's portrait to read their stats, aren't dependent on player interaction, and thus have a pretty shallow mastery curve (last-hitting when laning against an opponent is a different matter, though figuring out when a creep's ready to die doesn't completely factor into that).

If League were to somehow become a solved game, or a shallower game, if you were to "spoonfeed" players on every possible occasion, then it would have to seriously reevaluate its core gameplay, but thankfully that's not the case, because its core gameplay loop hinges on player-to-player interaction. One of its big problems, though, is that its new player experience is notoriously bad at giving people the tools they need to play the game, and generally the learning process is unnecessarily poorly communicated. With this in mind, I think there's genuine merit in "spoonfeeding" players, or at least new players, if it means they can start succeeding sooner and internalizing the game's core mechanics faster.

Akali is SO HOT6 votes

And then you realize Akali's shroud is one of the most easily countered abilities in the game. Don't forget how powerful a dash is for a ranged champion that does massive damage especially when it's on such a low cooldown. It doesn't matter that he can still be targeted when you have 120 armor and mr while dealing a ton of damage while being ranged. That doesn't even include PD and Death's Dance

JustMyBassCannon8 votes

I'll agree that the 120 Armor/MR is bullshit, even though it takes him, what, 10-15 seconds to build it up after level 13.

Graves is about as "ranged" as mini-Gnar, except with less mobility to make up for his damage output. He works best when fighting like he's melee, so that doesn't exactly make the "he's ranged" argument look good.

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

How about you actually fucking read what Akali is saying here?

Akali is saying that Akali (the champion)'s old W gave her free resists and that it was not APPARENT TO THE ENEMY TEAM. THERE WAS NO CLARITY. THERE WAS NO INDICATOR.

If you didn't intimately know about Akali's kit, then you would suddenly be surprised as to why she could drain tank you completely in her shroud. Because she gained a massive amount of free resists.

Akali is literally stating that they got rid of Akali (the champion)'s because it gave her free resists without being immediately apparent and that it was hidden power. It's literally the definition of hidden power.

The same thing is applicable with Graves. His E does not give any indicator to the player what so ever that dashing gives him stacking resistances. IT. IS. HIDDEN. POWER.

And before you go >She was becoming "brusier" like without actually really building like a bruiser.

Graves is an adc-burst tank while building like a bruiser.

IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM.
