What is Irelia's weakness?

Señor Karthus··6 votes·4,779 views

I might be a noob but I ask honestly. I can't find a way to out trade her. She is damagy, kinda tanky, hard to cc, tons of lifesteal, physical, magic and true damage, mobility. Riot always says that every champion has strong and weak points. But I certainly can't find her weakness. She has everything. Tips?

The problem with Irelia. You rofl stomp her before 9 with a counter pick or she rofl stomps your team.

The second she hits 9 and gets trinity you are done. The only person that can even stand a chance at that point is Darius or maybe even a really good Gnar. Riven can win if you burst her hard by getting 3 first.

As much as Riot says HP is the counter to True Damage it really isn't. No one can get enough HP to make up for True Damage and a Botrk built. Until she gets True Damage taken out of her kit, she is near unbalanced. The same goes for Yi.

True Damage was never meant to be spammable, idk why it was ever put into Yi and Irelia's kits because it should not be on AA champs on their AAs. Defeats the purpose of being able to counter build.

In all honesty there is no counter play to Irelia. It's the standard "death is the ultimate CC".

I suspect with the hints on Twitter about changes to knock-ups and tenacity that she is going to be seeing the nerf bat soon.

Yi and Irelia just deal SOOO much true damage. Because Vayne's W isn't broken as fuck dealing 8% of the target's MAX HEALTH in TRUE DAMAGE.

Kitten of Evil2 votes

At least Vayne's requires 3 auto-attack hits, rather than happening on every single hit... Against most non-tanks, Vayne's true damage per second is going to be less than Irelia's or Master Yi's, since Vayne's is 60 + 8% max HP every three hits... Squishies at level 18 have about 2000 HP, so Vayne gets 220 true damage per 3 hits. Master Yi gets 90+60% AD (reaches 220 at 217 AD) Irelia gets 225.

On yi kits it is fine because yi actually needs to buy damage to do decent amounts of true damage. Irelia W scales with lvls only, so she basically gets triforce and shits on everyone.

i tend to agree with this, while yi is snowbally, that only occurs when you have ppl who lack a brain against him. his WR is painfully low in high elo for a reason

Exactly.

Yi also loses some AD for his true damage

Irelia fights almost 100% with auto attacks. Frozen Heart and Randuins really weaken her power. She has no reliable escape so you can flip her over-aggression. She has some sustained power, but a lot is front-loaded, so you can out DPS. She has no form of poke.

Jax, Nasus(hard counter), Pantheon all have part of their kit that is strong vs her auto attacks. Sion does very well vs her because she has no escape and is a higher win rate. Darius and Kayle do well for the same reason, no escape. Poppy, Aatrox and Tryndamere can do well vs her because they get very strong at low health, while she loses part of her kit when the enemy is lower health than her.

She's not without weaknesses or counterplay even though there isn't a whole lot of them.

For the love of god don't lane poppy vs her it is hell. She counters your passive so hard.

So basically there is nothing you can do in lane unless you are Darius? And her weakness would be her late game? How is it allowed a champion with no counterplay during X phase or phases of the game? Oh wait...

To be honest most every matchup has some skill factor to it for irelia and her lane opponent unlike some things like playing garen against Lissandra or akali vs Lee sin. Yes some are better for Irelia and some are worse but at lest it feels like there is realistic potential for mistakes to be made and for either person to win.

Irelia is just in a bit of a strong place now after the nerf cycle has gone through and hit a lot of champs that use to be better counters against her.

Top lane is just terribly balanced in general right now. Low counterplay facerolling and low interaction farming abound.

Señor Karthus2 votes

Also, do you think Nunu could counter her since his Ice Blast slows MS and AS?

Captain Aishi1 votes

nunu is the unseen king of top lane honestly, spam autoattacks on minions so you can spam ice blast on the champion, consume whenever health is needed, win lane without your opponent being allowed to do anything about it

You need to beat her out early in the game and or finish before she can get her items otherwise she will just waltz in and win.

Juggernaut6281 votes

Play AP Fizz top. I win every time except when they max their stun first.

Irelia Bot1 votes

Enemies that she can not kill or force out of lane early game but push laneenough that she can't freely roam.

The fact that her peak power is level 11 with triforce and she is downhill from that point on unless fed and still building damage which if building more damage you messed up somewhere.

Janna.

Ok, here ya go...

she powerspikes at lvl 4, lvl 9, Sheen purchase and triforce purchase.

She is exceptionally weak pre lvl 4 and does fall off lategame.

Why does this matter? It's less noticeable in the LCS because of how teams play, and that's why she is so strong there, however in soloQ you just need to punish her weak early levels. That, or pick someone who scales better/similarly. (Examples being a jax or lissandra.... Jax scaling in a similar fashion and Lissandra being a stronger teamfight presence)

Also, if you want to counter Irelia's damage just build armor-oriented items such as Randuin's. People overestimate her true damage. Yes, it's nice, but it isn't what makes her so strong. The strongest part of her kit is that with her ult she can proc Sheen/Triforce 7-10 times within a short timespan. (each shot of her ult procs it), and most of her damage is physical (so is the triforce sheen proc[physical damage]).

That sounds nice and all but you can't always counter pick if they pick after you. I main Rumble top and I can't build a Randuin's first? I build item 3191 first but then I get magic damage and true damage and even with Rumble's strong harass I can never outtrade her or she just out sustain me. Pretty much the same when I try other kind of tops. As I said maybe it is that i am not good enough, but i just can't find the way to have a favorable lane phase against her.

Yandere Carry1 votes

an immobile champ that isn't too great at dueling? that's not the champ, that's you maining someone that isn't very good vs irelia. You can still beat her, the seekers early is really gold efficient and provides good earlygame stats.

Captain Aishi2 votes

on rumble i'd recommend getting haunting guise before armguard simply because of how much magic/true damage irelia does, the health will offer a more general survivability than the armor will, and the magic pen will allow you to be very threatening in early teamfights (which is what rumble wants to have happen most of the time)

Dyonas1 votes

Everyone else has offered better advice than I could have on dealing with Irelia but there is one thing I would add regardless of lane opponent. You don't always have to win your lane. By that I mean you might be shoved right up to your turret, farming under it and lose it. That's not ideal but it is ok. You farm up and get ready for team fighting. When I stopped getting so frustrated against lanes I couldn't win and accepted that fact I got a lot better and more useful for my teams.

CaptnJakSparrow1 votes

If you're in a truly fucked situation. You're better off leaving your lane to rot and roaming before you become a cheeseburger.

SoloQ is used to the losing top to continue losing, and laughing at the 0/6/0 top champion that is now 4 levels down and 60 cs down trying to defend a turret he can be dived over and over at.

However, nobody expects the random as top ganking mid with the jungle, securing dragon, and 5 man ganking bot lane and getting both mid and bot and dragon + getting enough assists/kills to swing back around, and possibly two to three levels out of it all.

sometimes the best way to avoid snowballing a champion is to simply not be around that champion.

you see this the higher you go up from the likes of top laners with very strong gank potentials like Riven. Riven is usually death for most mid laners if she catches them off guard, because she can double cc + burst + ult them if they try to dash or flash away. So, when she IS MID, or ganks mid, the mid is 90% guaranteed to die.

Also, if you wish to see an example. One of the Xin Zhao matches of mine on LoLking had a Riven vs Garen.

She died 3 times to him and finally said fuck it and roamed like I told her to. We proceeded to 3 man gank Yasuo, along with catching the jungler off guard forcing Garen to tele into the fight and die, and just proceeded to rapidly snow ball Riven and Velkox. Just by doing that, Velkoz and Riven both went from losing to snow balling. From there we systematically eliminated bot and mid and secured every dragon and ended the game before they could retaliate.

You mean ban selection?

LankPants1 votes

I'd say it mostly comes down to early game tactics.

Irelia's a lot better at fighting 1v1 than most champs but she really starts to struggle when her lane has multiple people in it. She has no way to farm without putting herself in danger and no poke at all to hit ranged champs who can poke her out of lane, this means her only option is to all in them, which she can't do if she's out numbered in lane. She's also a lot weaker than most top laners when heavily shut down.

So with this in mind there are two solid ways to deny Irelia

Lane swap into her Maybe not them most common strat in solo que and you won't be able to convince ever team you play with to do this but if you can talk your team into playing this strat and you know how to farm in a 2v1 lane it's the single best way to shut Irelia down.

Have your Mid lane and Jungle roam to camp her While not as effective as swapping lanes on her teams in solo que are generally a bit more happy to pull a lane camp than a lane swap. Irelia is quite bad at escaping ganks (although against certain characters like Ryze and Elise she becomes a lot harder to gank) as she lacks any true escapes.

Of course there's also the option of counter-picking her, and contrary to popular belief she has quite a few decent counters in the top lane. The basic idea of how you counter pick Irelia is that you don't pick a ranged champion or a weak laner. She struggles against tanky tops not named Gnar as they can play safe and force a farm lane against her simply disengaging her every time she tries anything and they become more useful than her in late game fights. She also struggles against early game powerhouses like Riven and Darius since her levels 1&2 are super weak and 3-5 aren't that much better.

The basic point that I'm trying to get across about countering Irelia is that it has nothing to do with your mechanics. You can't outplay her and any attempts to do so will just get you killed unless you're super far ahead. Instead Irelia forces you to think about the game. You have to actually use your brain and think of ways to shut her down rather than just spamming every key available to you and typing 'outplayed' in all chat.

mundo with sunfire, not kidding once you get sunfire she actually cant do anything to you. You kill her under tower repeatedly keep pushing the lane, they will have to send 2+ people to even attempt to kill you which allows your team to take other objectives

Honestly, just play Mundo
