People are too obsessed with the meta

Señor Karthus··207 votes·27,424 views

I just wanted to play mid Varus AP yesterday and everyone left the Team Builder the moment they saw me and accused me of trolling. When I finally found a team, my team said I was a troll when I got killed for the first time. The enemy Kalista accused me of trolling and insulted. When I ended up 21/4 after 4 consecutively triple kills and nuked any of them with one ult + one AA, they stopped talking (Kalista still reported me at the end xD poor mad girl). People is too obsessed with the meta. The moment they see something different that is absolutely viable, they freak out. We HAVE TO do something about this if we want to see more diversity and keep having fun with this game. We need to promote diversity and show why the meta is ok but it is not the only thing that there is. Otherwise people's minds will just be closer and closer to anything different.

I got beat by a Taric + Chogath bot lane duo in a ranked game last night (plat 4).

Even after the loss I had to appreciate their innovation. Was a fun game, I love seeing crazy strats like that work.

There's a serious problem when Rioter calls non-meta picks "innovative" and "crazy" It shows that meta is so strict and enforced that even Rioters are surprised if you come up with something as basic as 2 champs on top instead of one :/

LC$ is slowly killing this game. Or at least the fun coming from it.

A Taric and Cho duo top is certainly uncommon and innovative. Stop bashing Rioters for no reason.

he actually said duo bot... Even more uncommon lol

Do you exist solely to piss in people's cornflakes? Every comment of yours ive ever seen is so negative. If the game is that bad, take a break man. Jesus.

I also played against that duo once! I wasn't in bot lane but they destroyed ours lmao.

junglerboy161 votes

Both are really strong early game and being able to sustain each other with item 3302 while effectively doubling the amount of gold that the lane gives can make them and other similar kill lanes really strong.

Wheatloaf4 votes

Vi + Yasuo bot, anyone?

junglerboy163 votes

Pantheon+Rengar is about as scary as it gets, because both have huge early burst and can chain their CC quite well for almost guaranteed kills whenever they want.

joyguy2 votes

How about Discoheat's Rengar and Thresh bot? For those who haven't seen it

Silven6 votes

That might have been me. ;^)

I once played a Garen+Darius lane against a Kog'Maw and it was rather hilarious. Darius grabs, Garen silences, both spin around a bit and if one execute didn't do the trick, the other most definitely will.

Darius Ok Demacia boy, I don't like you but you're gonna have to work with me. Garen bet u cant spin as gud az meh

Time spent in Team Builder looking for team as Urgot top: 32 minutes (seriously...)

Time spent In Team Builder looking for team as Urgot top after he was seen in LCS: 5 seconds

This is the true definition of half-wits of League, and not just because it is considered "off-meta".....

Salt and Veigar15 votes

I remember one time I queued up as Urgot Top, 2 hours later (and I'm not exaggerating there) no one accepted me and I forgot I even queued up in the first place

MrBuffington4 votes

Thing is, I'd be more likely to trust an Urgot top before it showed up in LCS rather than after. There are so many people who bandwagon on "OP new meta" champs that they have no idea how to play. I'd rather have a top lane Yorick than a top lane Lissandra, tbh.

Duke Anax23 votes

Part of the problem is, people don't even know what the meta even means anymore.

When they say "that's not Meta!" They actually mean "That's not what the Pros did last weak"

Of course not! Pro's take the meta, then practice a very specific application of it with very little variation, so they become better at that specific strategy. But that only works in fixed teams!

SoloQ has to reiterpret the meta every game.

"The Meta" itself are just some simple realisations about the game, like:

  • Midlane get's the most XP, so should have a level scaling champ.
  • Duolanes get more gold through kills and assists, so should have item scaling champs.
  • toplane has to be able to stay solo for a while.

In that regard Urgot actually is a meta pick for top, kinda sturdy and pretty save. He just is not a meta pick for botlane because with his utility and lack of good AA, he doesn't scale that well with items.

Can a rioter like sticky this post or something?

Hold up, did a team actually play this recently? If so, which team, and which week? I gotta see.

That's why this community sucks.

On the same token, as soon as anyone sees something in the LCS, it's like they've been enlightened by some higher power that shows them "Yo, it's not just the same 20 champions. Let others on the field." and then they do... until the next patch comes around and they guard the precious sanctity of their win-rate like certain champions plan to steal it like gold from a vault.

Seriously, some people put way too much stock in the LCS, whether by allowing "meta" picks, not allowing "off-meta" picks, or playing the same "meta" champions 10-20 games in a row because it's "totes OP guis." It seems like people are just continually shoving their head up the ass of the LCS players for no discernible reason. "LCS players didn't pick it therefore I shouldn't!" "LCS players picked it, so I should spam the fuck out of it!"

KaisadiIIa6 votes

I've been playing Lissandra since her release, because I love her. And I have had to stand people telling me she was useless and "reasoning" why for 2 years. Now I have to stand the same people telling me she's OP and she deserves nerves.

Also: you have a lot of people are against "weekly free champions"...

Oh no! This week [blank] champion is free! Don't let him get into our Team (in Team Builder)!!!

Seriously??? How does anyone learn a new champion if no one tries it in the first place?

Ignore them, go into ranked and play what you want. That's what I do, and what are they going to do? Report me? Nunu

LordDarkshayde4 votes

Unfortunately that's exactly what they will do, even if you carry them through the game. This is why the report function is broken cause whiny kids that get proven wrong can still spam "Verbal Abuse/Negative Attitude" reports and get you chat restricted or even ranked restricted. I try to stick to the meta to avoid arguments, but when I know something is going to work in a ranked game I do it regardless of what my team thinks. My best example of this is when the enemy team picks Zed mid and I get to mid I use Shen cause Shen shuts him down so hard.

this sounds like those women "love you body as it is and be proud of it" when there's really nothing to be proud of a body that you don't take care of and show it to the entire world.

Fatphobia is not welcomed in this thread.

an asshole for saying the truth, if you're fat (for eating disorder, not for genetics) why would you be proud of showing the world the mess you call for body..

I am a physical therapist specialized in patients that had a bariatric surgery to lose weight. You are still fat shaming and you are part of the worst health issues that obese people have, that is their social health (yes, health is not only physical but also mental and social). You are blaming people for eating disorders that are not always (rarely, actually) under their control. They might be eating badly because they CAN'T AFFORD other kind of food. They might be eating too much because they have psychological problems that they can't help unless they get some proper treatment that sometimes (especially in this medically ugly country called the USA) they can't afford. They can be eating badly because they just don't know the problems that obesity brings because their sociocultural level is low. They can be eating too much because of metabolic disorders. Because of certain medication they have. They can be eating too much because we live in a society that encourage that kind of eating behavior with oversized meals. They can be eating too much because they are surrounded by assholes who treat them bad because of their body shape and make fun of them or keep shaming them for being like that, leading them to depression (yes that's where people like you fit). Every professional in the obesity area will tell you that the self responsibility in obesity is, at the most, 50%. So please, unless you have studied for years one of the most complex and challenging health issues of our days, I think you should shut up.

That's what every bully says.

And someday, one of those bullies will indirectly cause the death of their victims.

Someone is telling you how certain actions and words harm people, and you respond by saying you don't care. You are a bully. I'm sorry, but this apathy is just sickening.

Your cup of care is a cup of bullshit. And it ain't empty.

varus isnt meta. sivir is meta. i suck so bad at sivir i should have my account banned if i pick her in ranked.

should i play varus or sivir in ranked if i have to adc?

why bring it to ranked? answer: i will play the champ i think i can win with, if it isnt meta right now it doesnt matter. you are an ass hat if you pick a meta champ just because its meta if you are better and more comfortable with another champ.

Icy Auron7 votes

This. I don't care how strong people think Zed is, I'm never picking him over Anivia in mid lane.

S H A Y C 04 votes

I wouldnt pick either, but then again i cant beat bots with zed and i have never played anivia once so it would be irresponsible of me to pick either in a ranked match.

I love off-meta stuff. Feel free to add me if you feel like running AP Varus or whatever again, and want to have an easier time finding a team.

Crystal Castles11 votes

Ugh people like that are so annoying. I love playing support, and sometimes I feel like going off-META.

For example in a Blind Pick, I saw that the ADC I was playing with was Ezreal, so I decided to go for a Malphite support since he's a relatively safe ADC that could get away. During the whole laning phase I zoned out the enemy Varus and Leona to the point where Varus was down 40+ CS and poked them out of lane multiple times.

When Zed decides to roam bot, I ping Ez to back off, but he decides to farm because that seems more important, so I decided to lock down Zed hoping Ez would realize to finally leave. Unfortunately, he ignored Leona's obvious cues that a gank was going down and got chain CC'd to death. For the rest of the game he harassed me for picking Malphite and said I should just unistall, even though I engaged on the enemy carries constantly and peeled for my team. We won the game and it wasn't even close.

My only advice is that whenever people start harassing you, just respond "k." It just really annoys them to know that you heard what they are saying, and choosing to ignore them anyways. (:

Spacesuit Spiff4 votes

Yeah, offmeta supports are fun, until anything goes wrong and then suddenly its all your fault. Doesn't matter if the Vayne tumbled into Braum level 1 and tried to melee him to death, or top laner never connected the game, it's "gg play a real support noob reported"

single eboy10 votes

That's why you play with your friends and turn off /all chat. You can do whatever you like and have fun, that's what games are meant for, right?

Rubber Jesus8 votes

My friend played Nunu mid and wrecked Katarina. She flamed him all game in chat, and called him an idiot for going against the meta. My reply? Looks like he wasn't such an idiot since he won lane hard and is carrying. She still continued to flame for going against the meta and said she would report for a troll pick since she died so much to him.

SionideCN6 votes

I don't care about meta in normals, do what the hell you want.

I've seen muramana trist in ranked though, as a serious build - so, some people are a bit jaded to 'off meta' picks.

I played a normal draft against an ADC azir that fed me six kills then afkd, we won in 20 mins. - Not everyone is like this but a lot of people who play off meta stuff are quick to jump to the defense of playing poorly or just having their off-meta pick not work.

You CAN make adc azir and AP varus work but you should be ready to take the blame for winding up completely useless if you do fall behind.

Thryale5 votes

I honestly don't really care about what you build in ranked (with a few exceptions. if our jungler doesn't have a jungle item, I know we're screwed. He's giving up way too much free gold) What I really care about is what you do. It's so frustrating to see teams meander around in our jungle when they could be placing wards and pushing towers as a group.

rescued3 votes

People focus too much on meta and counters, If you are good at a champion, play them.

junglerboy165 votes

I love me some AP Varus, strong early game poke, huge late game burst damage, and you can 100-0 3 people at once with your AoE abilities and a Runaan's.

LeeDark3 votes

People want to win games.

If you take AP Varus mid over a hundred games, with teammates and against opponents at the same skill level as you, playing champions they are comfortable playing, do you think you'd manage even close to a 50% win rate? It is highly unlikely.

Does not having a marksman on your team sometimes work? Yes. Will it win consistently? No.

In any competitive game, a meta develops for a reason. If your goal is to win games, there is a right way to play. Hell, there are several right ways. There are also wrong ways. I'm sorry, but that is just the fact of it. If you want to play something off-meta, expect extreme skepticism. Expect people to be upset because they want to win and you are decreasing the overall likelihood of that happening. Expect to have to wait longer in Teambuilder for a game. Expect to have to prove that you aren't trolling. Expect people to be upset if you don't do well.

If you can't deal with all those things, then don't go off-meta. It is really that simple. Either shut up and deal with it, or don't do it.
