Corki is outclassing AP Mid laners

The Deckowner··93 votes·6,404 views

Corki got poke with his r, waveclear with qer, free TLD proc on e, safety/mobility with his w, extreme good roaming with package, and he has the 500 dmg auto attack that every "assasin vs mage" argument will bring up.

The only thing he lacks is some cc, but that is all. he does mix dmg so building item 3155 will not completely counter him. he is ranged so he can cs very safely and he can build lifesteal and crit/attackspeed which no mage can! he can take down tower very quick, and isnt as mana reliant as most ap mages.

Seriously he is one of the most picked champion in LCS and he is way more often a mid laner than adc. if a team got cc from top jg and support they will simply take corki and he will perform much better than 90% of the mages. there is literally no down side of having Corki mid instead of an ap mage, and sieging/counter sieging with a corki is so good.

TL;DR: Something should be done to put corki back in the bot lane

Lux is really strong (highest winrate mid in the game, highest pick rate mid in the game) Katarina is coming back into meta Ahri is solid as ever Fizz is good Malzahar is doing fine Morg mid is actually decent Hybrid Kayle mid is disgusting (and thankfully, rare) Zilean is doing fine mid Anivia is doing fine mid Lissandra is okay mid, and stomps the hell out of loads of meta picks atm TF is alright Annie is good Diana is a solid counterpick to champs like Zed and Talon Lulu is a good mid. LeBlanc is solid but not amazing, low win rate due to popularity + skill required to execute her properly Orianna is good but takes tonnes of skill which is why she has such a low winrate

You see the thing is, yes AP mids lose to AD mids a lot, but AP mids can come back much more easily than AD mids, that's why almost every very high elo / pro player, play AP mids more than AD mids, it's because they scale fairly well in comparison to their AD counterparts. AP midlaners aren't weak, bad etc, it's just there is actually some VARIETY in mid and COMPETITION to them now, and I think it's better that way. Hold on tight anyway I am sure when the immobile mage rework happens, or the mid season update happens, AP itemisation will get buffed and be good once again, once more making AP mid choke out its contenders.

PBnJelly6 votes

Lux is very strong (getting nerfed ty riot) Lol Ahri is safe and pretty alright Fizz is only good if your enemy doesn't know how to autoattack Malz is ok into assassins and smurfs but otherwise irrelevant Morg is pretty much only good into LB Kayle needs like 3 items to do anything Zilean is good at making enemies tilt I've seen literally 0 Anivias since she got nerfed Liss is really strong, mostly as a counterpick TF is good IF you aren't vs an assassin Annie is pretty good but gimmicky Diana is hella strong idk why she's not picked more Lulu is only good in organized play (premades, pro) LB is dumb as hell but she sucks nuts at teamfighting which is the only thing soloq players do after 15 mins Orianna is safe and pretty alright

I don't even think AP mids are irrelevant I just disagree with the stuff you said.

EcchiOtakuTM3 votes

Malz isn't irrelevant though, he's amazing at pick plays and team shredding in teamfights.

The nerf didn't affect anivia.

And the lack of galio is displeasing, hate how everyone assumes he's only an anti-mage and useless vs AD but meh guess I'll be the only one to spam stormraiders on galio

WadeWilson13374 votes

ADC spends 1300g.

Malzahar becomes irrelevant out of laning phase, unless he wants to ult that MasterYi whos about to kill him in .5 seconds with 3k hp and 150 mr.

EcchiOtakuTM4 votes

Sigh, adc buys QSS malz proceeds to still spam E on enemy team and if QSS is used he can pick play ulti on them for team to take a squishy out. You and the rest of the playerbase underestimate malz as he HAS to use ulti immediately when he can hold onto it and not even need to use it in a teamfight. He's highly relevant outside of lane phase with his 3 second silence Q, Heavy shredding W and his insane harass on E not to mention his winion helps take out people and can even block projectile shots if you played malz enough.

Oh and let's not forget since he has heavy tank shredding power yi isn't even an issue.

But then again this is NA where people still underestimate malz as only a low elo stomper.

WadeWilson13375 votes

Malzahar has to root himself in place when he uses his ult. He has no mobility, and he autopushes waves in and has no escapes or self peel. Malzahar is very similar to a Yasuo lane to me as a jungler; hes just going to autoextend. I dont think highly of Malzahar because quite frankly, i havent lost to one in...as far as i can remember? I can literally just sit on that lane and he will just keep pushing and just be a squishy mage who doesnt do much other than be decent against tanks and sit still saying "Hey please dont hurt me as i attempt to murder your carries."

Its also quite difficult to take someone with Ecchi and Otaku in their name..

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

If a malz overexts in lane, he already messed up as malz.

WadeWilson13374 votes

His E will automatically overextend the wave at level 1 simply by using it, which every malz does, because thats the idea. You push them in and poke them down. And then you get camped like hell and realize "Oh, this is why that guy on the forums said Malz is garbage."

EcchiOtakuTM4 votes

Again if a malz has to overext he doesn't know how to use E and his passive at all.

Malz never has to overext period. If a malz wants to put himself in danger for no reason he can't malz at all.

PBnJelly4 votes

Except he's right. If someone brings up a legitimate flaw to a champion and your argument against it is "lol that person just doesn't know how to use the champion" then you aren't providing a valid argument. The fact is that Malz DOES autopush the wave which means you are either going to have to overextend or sit back and hope your e last hits all the minions. Also QSS destroys Malzahar. An ADC WILL outdps Malz with just his basic abilities, and they can just hold their QSS until he ults. It's not like his E is gonna kill them, it's not that high in damage or long ranged spam. If you walk close enough to the enemy ADC to E them while their team is around you will get punished. Malz is just a champion that depends on your enemy being stupid. You have to hope they'll stand next to minions with E on them. You have to hope they don't buy QSS because it DOES counter him. You have to hope the enemies without QSS will try to 1v1 you. You have to hope if you ult in the middle of the teamfight the enemy team is too stupid to just cc and pop you because you just suppressed yourself.

crippler382 votes

don't his minions last hit and give him gold?

PBnJelly2 votes

If your Voidling is last hitting then you must be getting really lucky, it doesn't wait to last hit, it just blindly autoattacks whatever it's supposed to be targeting at the time.

Not to mention they last for a max of 21 seconds and the enemy laner can just kill it. Just another example of you having to hope the enemy isn't smart enough to deal with your champion

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Sigh, since you obviously don't know malz I'll say how he plays

Lane phase, if you face anyone you focus on mostly keeping your passive up and using E to push while your minion kills things and you're never in any sort of trouble allowing you to roam which he does quite amazingly, and if your enemy wants to trade with you, you save your next passive proc just to make sure you win the trade without overext. Not to mention once you're 6 your roaming power grows immensely.

Now for moments when that adc grabs qss and some mid lane assassins, you harass with Q+E and with rylia that gives you heavy utility to keep enemies where you want for your team oh look that one adc wants you to ulti him so he can use QSS guess what, malz doesn't HAVE to use ulti period because of how effective Q+E are in themselves you don't use ulti unless you know your team can follow up on that person.

OH so you think malz can't harass with Q, that's laughable.

Let's see in siege malz can place W and keep pushing winions with E as well.

I mean unless you suck at positioning I don't see any issues here but seeing as how you think malz is bad I guess that is your fault.

But lol keep thinking malz is useless guess you'll never understand him. Probably going to be someone who also thinks galio is useless since it's not a mage meta.

Also fun fact malz has heavy team fight power if you didn't realize, any malz who tries to 1on1 constantly at this point can't play malz anymore. However I guess that fact will escape you since you think malz is just for 1v1 lol.

PBnJelly2 votes

If you don't have trouble while pushing your lane then you've never faced a competent jungler.

If the enemy ADC is consistently getting hit by your Q+E then they have very poor positioning and you aren't facing a competent ADC.

I didn't say he can't harass with Q, but it's a pretty easy skillshot to dodge and isn't as spammable as other champs poke abilities so it isn't reliable.

Yeah he has good waveclear but so does basically every other mage.

I never actually said Malz is bad, I just said he isn't relevant outside of certain situations.

Neither Malz nor Galio is useless, but they aren't optimal picks either. I actually think every champ is pretty viable and even strong in certain situations but some champs are clearly better than others.

But I guess you're a special snowflake player who thinks their favorite champs are soo amazing and totally not bad in any way unlike what everyone is saying. That or someone who plays bot games so everything is OP.

Kayle needs like 3 items to do anything

item 3101 + item 1026 would like a word.

PBnJelly5 votes

I refuse to believe you're doing anything with just those two pieces of items unless you're laning against a potato. Kayle not only needs multiple items to be strong but she also has more than 6 'core' items so you have to sacrifice items that would usually benefit you hugely. 'Standard' mages need: item 3165 OR item 3027 Kayle needs: item 3115 item 3124 item 3085 'Standard' mages build: item 3020 item 3165 item 3089 item 3135 item 3157 item 3001 (in whatever order) Kayle Builds: item 3115 item 3124 item 3085 item 3116 item 3089 item 3135 item 3146 item 3091 item 3157 plus one of like 3 good boot choices.

SithesisLord2 votes

I am, actually. Rune pages do wonders.

Kayle only needs Nashor's and Zerker's, honestly. Runaan's is largely optional.

Kayle only builds Rabadon's/Mid if she's mid. Wit's End, Void Staff and Rylai's are also largely optional. Gunblade isn´t even built.

item 3115 item 3006 item 3124 item 3100 item 3001 item 3085 Is what i build. Runaan's is only there because i like to exaggerate on wave clear.

Kayle only has 2 core items. Nashor's and Guinsoo's. She can go anywhere from there on out.

WadeWilson13371 votes

Kayle doesnt need item 3085 . Shes a two item wonder like all other attack speed champs. item 3115 item 3124 is an ungodly amount of damage by itself, and they are fairly cheap items.

Puppet33r2 votes

Lulu is only good in organized play (premades, pro)

You have no idea how wrong you are. Lulu can bully around any solo lane early game(including top-notch assholes like Lux, Zed and Malphite), saves her teammates when they do stupid dives or got caught(i mean you just click R, you don't need any input from them) and she is pretty safe with her gigantic speed boost and on-demand shield. Her only problem is that late game she won't be much of a carry, but even that you can somewhat compensate with item 3285 or item 3100.

You may disagree, but very few mid-laners outclass Galio . I have had successful games against pretty much every mage, zed, yas, and talon. I have yet to play against corki though,

Everything outclasses AP midlaners.

Gee I wonder why :

  • All AP items got cost increase
  • Removal of mana potion (Thus favoring manaless champions or those who mostly rely on AA for damage)
  • item 3155/item 3053 are just too good (on almost anyone) and prevent AP mid laners from bursting
  • Assassins items got buffed
  • Poor mastery choice for mages outside of thunderlord (especially since DFT got guted)
  • Lack of wards make immobile mages even harder to play (unless your name is Lux)
  • Following all of the above points, mobile assassins/ADC are even more appealing in mid

Let's hope mid year mage update will fix something...

ltmetal10 votes

Mid lane Corki is not the problem, he's a symptom. He's one of the very few champs to do primarily magic damage while building AD items, so his itemization is better than every mid laner who doesn't build item 3027. If Corki is nerfed due to outclassing mid laners, he will only be underpowered once the problem gets fixed by improving AP itemization or nerfing magic resist.

Evewynn9 votes

There's really no reason to use a traditional Mage anymore. I hope the mid year update tunes the items a bit to bring them back into relevance.

Kaokentake7 votes

my ONLY problem with corki is the slow on his package

remove it

a massive 90% slow to your whole team is not fricken balanced

dudes rocking unreal cc with that thing

the package range is so high. champ is stupid dumb. just remove the slow and itll be fine tho

SpongebobIsLife2 votes

when people say stupid dumb, I laugh.

Sohleks6 votes

Corki mid has always done these things. Difference now tho is he was given a big package to make plays with and was given a late game on par with other ADCs due to magic damage conversion.

Actually before W range nerf and Q nerf and when we had 6 potion flask start last season he was even better early game for my purposes. 6 potion ranged AD basically was no counterplay to 2 potion start mana users. At least now Corki has to play somewhat respectfully.

LadyRenly5 votes

thank god someone else is saying it, because I've always hated Corki mid but I feel like I'm the only one. Corki is to mid lane what Quinn is to top lane, trying to play any kind of melee champ mid is just sheer hell

YuGiHo5 votes

corki, the mid lane marksman Varus wishes he was. now poor varus doesn't get picked at all any more

PiVoRx3 votes

Imo thers was always something wrong with that champ, he builds full ad and still deal shitload of ap damage, and if its not enough he still has package..

Spaceman5pff3 votes

Why does it matter if corki is mid or bot?

I am really confused here WTF

The Deckowner2 votes

Corki >Mage my point ^

Spaceman5pff2 votes

So, just because Corki lanes better than mages, and outputs more damage (which by the way he sacrifices almost any cc to do) than mages, he is broken?

Maybe he fills a different role than the mages he matches against and as such has much different power expectations.

The point is that he completely outclasses almost all mages in the role they're supposed to be good in, because AD itemization is disgustingly good right now and almost every relevant AP item got nerfed.

I can beat Corki just fine as Malzahar Fizz Velkoz - why you say that he can beat AP mages and assassins?

Masala Chai5 votes

Vel'Koz is pretty much long range poke mage.

Fizz has a horrible winrate vs Corki, maybe you haven't played a ton of matches vs good ones?

Corki beats Diana, LB, Ekko and Akali in lane matchups. Corki might have to rush Hexdrinker vs LB, which puts off his TriForce but it's still a good matchup.

Malzahar is exceptionally binary

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Corky doesn't lack "some cc." He lacks ANY cc.

Also let people put Corki mid. Put your mage bot if you don't want to git gud and beat him mid.

Big Lincoln17 votes

he has cc though

package gives him a displacement and a heavy slow in the aoe

DarkRitual3 votes

He doesn't have on-demand CC. He has one ability once every few minutes. It's there, but not always available.

WadeWilson13373 votes

Its also one of the best engages in the entire game..

doombotMECHA3 votes

it's another ult. why-o-why did riot give corki another ult

Only Play Darius1 votes

I never really understood the purpose of the package. It sends him to the middle or behind the enemy team, as an ADC shouldn't that be the last place he wants to be?

macromite4 votes

the thing is, you can be very creative with it.

Tobias Brackner2 votes

Yeah but it's extremely limited and he has a 1 minute window. Respect it when Corki yells out that he has Package.
