Confession why I play mage support by a dirty Zyra main

SSShutTheDuckUp··8 votes·1,624 views

So, this is gonna be straight-forward and you are free to downvote as much as you want. These are my reasons why I play mage supports and not "support-y" supports:

  1. They are fun to play. No need to explain here. Everyone finds fun in the game as he wants and for me mage supports are fun.
  2. When supporting a bad team I feel truly helpless with the "real" supports. Their job is to multiply team's strength and you cannot depend on it in solo queue, at least in my elo.
  3. I want to win games. Believe it or not, even when i am "just a support" I still bet my LP on these game. So i want to win them. I love to feel that I have impact over the outcome of the game and playing a mage botlane gives me that.
  4. I love deep warding. I love to know where the enemy team is. Playing mage support, with a lead, I can actually go in the enemy jungle and fight back if I find an enemy.
  5. My team benefit from me taking you out of the lane. That's a fair way to win - gives me control over drake, first turret blood, roam to snowball midlane, invade enemy jungle and take away resources from them. You may not like it, but I do. I am here and I am squishy. Like it or not I have counter-play.

tl.dr: even if most of ADC mains do not like it - me, as a support player, still have the audacity to want to have fun, win and actually do stuff to win. And yes, my LP are on the line as well, so I like that I can carry and be the deciding factor that pushes my team to the victory .

Lux artillery support you say?

Well, I play mostly Zyra, who is not exactly artillery. I do like Lux, but I Zyra offers a lot of CC on the top of nuking enemy team. Thumps up for Lux though [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

haven't played zyra since the changes, but she used to basically have gold-gen turrets.

I actually like her pre-rework scaling more. She was able to remove something like 80% in total enemy health bars with one combo. Now she is more early game oriented, while still packing a punch of CC and damage lategame. Go give her a try - you will have fun with her. Your enemies won't though.

I agree, I LOVE support more than anything (except maybe old Azir Mid). Not just the supp role but the true support champions, the one's with shields and heals and move speed buffs and super cool CC and utility abilities. I can’t get enough.

The only stipulation is I am super reliant on matchmaking to match me with a team that is either relatively similar or greater in skill level compared to the enemy team which can be super inconsistent and therefore REALLY frustrating. I agree that being on a team of less skilled players relative to the enemy team when playing a true support leaves me feeling 110% useless. There is no force to multiply since a teams strength is determined by the cumulative skill of the players of each team compared to one another.

Mages are more consistent because you can be impactful even if your team is worse than the enemy team.

Recently I feel that sometime mage supports are better even in multiplying strength thou. Landing huge CC on the enemy team your decent teammates to reposition and fight better. Even with that being said I also love the real supports. Just not when my team is weaker. An we all know why. Best of luck in your games, bro!

Zyra's ult is also absolutely amazing too.

IKR. 5 men E into 5 men Q into 5 men R, while spawning 4-5 flowers nearby That ult alone has won so many teamfights/games for me, that I cannot even count

It doesn't matter what champ I play, love it whenever my team picks zyra

Honestly i dont have much problem, with Zyra, but seriously..... level 3 you can place 2 plants snare through them then use the other skill (havent played zyra in a fuck long time so i dont know the names) and that is 3/4 of the ADC's hp with little to no counterplay. its busted. She needs base damage nerfs.

SSShutTheDuckUp1 votes

Her snare is a slow moving projectile that is easily dodged and it is on a long-ish cooldown. Bait it and punish her for missing it. If you cannot one-shot her flowers - get away from them, do not stay and AA them for 4 seconds, takning their full duration damage. Zyra is vulnerable to both poke and all-in as she has no sustain and is squishy and immobile. With that being said a good Zyra can abuse her range and damage to deny enemy AD as much as possible. However that makes he gankable - plants usually push the wave. Also - hug the turret. Turret shots one-shot flowers, so she is not effective under enemy turret. Also - grab some sustain. what would help you survive her poke early and if she does not snowball it is hard for her to became the scary menace she is known to be.

If the problem is little to no counterplay, nerfing base damage isn't the solution.

Not that I agree, but your solution doesn't fit your proposed problem.

Like it or not I have counter-play.

No, mage supports don't. They don't have counterplay for the same reason Lee Sin doesn't, you can't answer them in the early game and by the time you can answer them they've quite often already won. This is the problem with massively early game centric champions.

tl.dr: even if most of ADC mains do not like it - me, as a support player, still have the audacity to want to have fun, win and actually do stuff to win.

You do so at the expense of others. No one enjoys laning against the cancer that is support Zyra, be it an ADC player or a traditional support player. That's ultimately why the idea of a mage "support" should be culled off and disallowed entirely.

I'll make sure I ask the enemy team how they feel about my support pick on my next game. I wouldn't dare to pick something that would tilt them just so I can get a win...

Designing champions that aren't cancer to play against is more important than designing champs who are fun to play. If Riot stopped designing so many cancer champs, or at least gutted the current ones (Lee, Yas, Zyra, Malz, Vayne, Zed, Riven ect) into unplayablity it would make the game net funner.

I mean I play Zyra enough that I know you can counter her. JUST KILL ALL THE FLOWERS!
