What is Mundo's Niche?

Mundo saw a fair amount of play by top laners in s4. Why though? Is he a fighter/bruiser or tank? What did he have that those other top lane champions such as Renekton, Jax, Irelia and Maokai did not? His damage falls off to abysmal way before he becomes that unkillable regen tank in the late game. He has this mid game period of no damage and not being too tricky to kill. He also cannot split push as well due to his weird mixed damage and poor wave clear. When late game comes, he doesn't offer much cc for team fights like a tank would.

What is Mundo's Niche?

Tanky DPS.

Champions with a tank primary in roll are durable champions that must be dealt with because they bring a lot of CC/utility.

Champions like Mundo with a Fighter primary and Tank secondary are durable champions that must be dealt with because they bring a lot of damage.

Urgot's damage falls off.

Mundo has %HP damage (essentially doesn't fall off) a 100~200 AD steroid, and 2 sunfire capes perpetually going off. He can build full-tank and out-DPS a wide range of other champions late game.

He also cannot split push as well due to his weird mixed damage and poor wave clear.

Mundo is the single fastest speed-run champion I've seen. He's capable of pushing over the Nexus in less than 6 minutes in a 1v0 set-up, which is about 6 minutes faster than most champions. That's the exact opposite of poor wave clear.

Mundo was also picked as a jungler in season 2 specifically because his jungle clear time was among the fastest in the game.

You're doing something horrifically wrong if you think Mundo has wave-clear issues.

Mixed damage is also an advantage for Mundo. It's the type of damage you want on any champion building tanky - pure physical or magical damage is only useful if you're pursuing a glass-cannon build, which would be suicidal in Mundo's case.

He's a Hyper-Tank (similar to hyper-carry, but for tanks) that excels against double AP comps.

The reason for this, is that the double AP comp he's against allows him to rush a Spirit Visage without losing any integrity against a potential AD lane opponent.

So he's one of the tanks geared more towards magic resistance than armor. But at the end of the day he still just sits there in team fights. You don't have to attack him. His only remote ability to peel is a skillshot slow that's hitbox was recently nerfed. Aren't tanks all about team fighting?

He has sustain dmg that's pretty absurd. He can easily kill carries if they don't kill him or fight him off

he can slow you for days so you aint running away those cleavers do %hp damage btw so you dont have to build damage :D

in team fights you light yourself on fire and stand in the middle, dealing tons of damage with it, your AA and cleavers while soaking up skill shots, cc and regen all damage taken

i find myself being a rpetty powerful duelist has mundo, idk wat ur talknig bout fire+sunfire+cleavers.. shit use all his skills, they all do damage

if you have a pretty good aim, his early game is beast, those cleavers got 1000 range and you can CS or poke easily with it

I'm sorry but I can't take you seriously in the slightest if you think this is true. Post Sunfire, you just toggle Burning Agony and run through the minion waves, you don't even need to use your cleavers or E. I mean yeah he has sub-par wave clear early on, but it becomes a non-issue mid-late game.

with enough cdr mundo can have a 100-199 AD (at max rank) steroid up with only a .3 second downtime. at rank 1, that steroid is on par with a rank 5 tryndamere Q for AD added. his cleavers do % current hp damage and are actually pretty easy to hit if you smartcast them. his health regen can get excessive really quickly. item 3123 was removed from SR so only ignite (when a lot of top laners take teleport) and champions who have abilities that reduce healing Fizz Varus MissFortune Tristana can really take him down once he gets a few items complete. the % health damage and AD steroid allow him to solo dragon safely and relatively quickly. he can take full defensive masteries because his W is the only ability that actually has any damage scaling.

His niche is being annoying.
