Can anyone explain why kogmaw counters hard engage and loses to poke supports?

Because Kog wins slug-fests and Kog loses poke/disengage.

Kog wants a drawn out fight where you have to all-in him. That's where he's strongest, because both Fervor of Battle and Rageblade have to ramp up. Kog does not want quick trades with foes that can dance out of his range since that usually results in him wasting his W and becoming helpless while it's down.

This coming from someone who has been spamming Kog since open beta and plays Dominion a ton. So that's ALL TEAM FIGHTS. ALL THE TIME.

To put it short, thats why he hated draven and varus. Well he is overtuned and counters them by sheer stats though

Yep.

Avoiding hard engage has been the way to fight Kog ever since Riot remade him. But the most recent changes to his W have given him so much early power that it doesn't particularly matter anymore. The weakness is still there, but it gets overshadowed by how silly he is at the moment.

I don't think winning 54% of the time really counts as being countered.

It's kind of like running at a mini-gun to kill the shooter with a melee weapon; you're going to take damage and most likely be killed before you reach the gunner. Fire a big gun or high damage missiles/grenades from a safe distance and you'll chunk it down from outside its range.
