Guide to Riven's power spikes! All you need to know to play against her

IllllllIIIIlllll··317 votes·23,412 views

I notice that many players seem to have trouble with Riven and complain about it on the boards. Most likely, these players do not understand Riven's powerspikes. If you play safely and hide under your turret during Riven's power spikes, you will be absolutely fine. Of course, you may lose some cs, but rest assured, Riven's power spike will soon be over.

Level 1: Riven has a big power spike at level one; do not try dueling Riven at level one. She can easily output around 300 damage in 2 seconds with her Q and autos, which, paired with ignite, can finish you off if you're not careful.

Level 2: Riven hits a huge power spike at level two. She now either has a stun or a dash, both of which negate the necessity of using Q to gap close, allowing her to get the full burst off.

Level 3: Riven's level three power spike is one of the strongest in the game. She has a point in each skill, which, synergizing with her increased passive, allow her to win trades and run out safely.

Level 4: Riven's level four power spike is not to be underestimated. The base damage from broken wings is tripled by Riven's level four power spike. Avoid trading with a level four Riven at all costs.

Level 5: Play very carefully against Riven's level five power spike. Not only does Riven get a significant boost to her Q base damage, the threat of a sudden level six all in looms in the background.

Level 6: Riven gains a 300 damage execute at level six, as well as another level on her passive and increased attack range. It is absolutely crucial to play safely against a level six Riven, as she can easily 100-0 you.

Level 7: Riven's level seven power spike comes from yet another rank of broken wings. If you do not yet have armor, you are absolutely screwed. Play safely against Riven until her power spike is over

Level 9: Not only does Riven max out her Q, she also gains another rank of her passive. Her level nine power spike is very powerful, so don't be caught in the middle of the lane against a level nine Riven.

Level 11: Riven's level eleven power spike gives her another passive level AND 240 increased damage on her execute. Do not go anywhere near a level eleven Riven.

Using my in depth knowledge of Riven's power spikes, I have concluded that the proper way to deal with a Riven is not cs until level eight. So you see, clearly Riven complainers (all of whom don't know Riven's power spikes) have it all wrong. I hope this guide was very informative on how to deal with Riven's power spikes; go stomp those Rivens for freelo.

could be worse could be item 1036 with a item 1036 or a item 1037 or even a item 3134 or item 1038

Heck she could show that you are even less then nothign by gettign a item 3141

Am I the only one who constantly wonders why Riven's will come into lane with nothing but Longswords.

Sure it Hydra builds out of it but holy crap some of the Riven players will just farm and come back with

item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036

as their build

Gorgannan24 votes

Riven and Zed are like the two champions who can viably build like, 11 longswords throughout the game.

The Mighty Flea9 votes

Talon? All your main items build out of long swords except IE.

Gorgannan3 votes

Totally right :^) I forgot about him.

They don't have any MAJOR item related power spikes, but there's definitely a strength in always being able to grab a Longsword if you don't have any money, knowing it will be put to good use.

Lee too! and dont forget Velkoz!

Vel main here, can confirm. Not enough for NLR? grab a long sword.

Obviously the people who go for a level 2 100-0 all-in since it offers the best stats for the gold it costs in exchange for slowing your final build.

The level 6 all in Riven's usually start item 1036 item 2003 and rush item 3134 item 1037 for the damages.

Then of course you have people that just all in no matter what they start because screw it they just can.

#It's basically saying 'stay away from Riven'. Her kit needs changing FOR FUCKS SAKE!

Please feel free to propose these changes that everyone wants but no one comes up with

Have q do damage but no knockup...have dash dash half as far...ap or %max health scaling on shield. Is that a good start?

Baunjo3 votes

Her Q damage is very little. Her main damage source is, believe it or not, her passive. Second, eliminate knockup? Her knock-up time is pretty low man, It's mainly for outplays.

Steelflame15 votes

Mana? Honestly, a big part of her bullshytery comes from the fact she has NO end to it. You can never win in a even trade vs her, as you still had to blow X resources she did not(And we all know Riven loves to get 2 different lifesteal items, so GL even getting that damage you did to her to stick in the first place). Of course, that would state a rather large problem in Riot's design philosophy, the ability for manaless champions to easily access the power their moves offer repeatedly. Riven is it's biggest abuser, but so many others have instead a "whittle you down with and endless assault" that it isn't counterable for mana based champions short of winning a quite risky all-in.

Manaless can be made to work, but you HAVE to give it trade-offs to a significant degree for it to be balancable and not feel like hell for the person who is on the other end of the assault. What trade off does Riven have for manaless? Sure isn't damage, as she is almost always one of the top damage dealers in League. Sure isn't mobility, because she has some of the lowest CD movement abilities in the game. In a raw "Race" she almost always will win, with only 2 or 3 champs who I can think of who can beat her. Sure isn't CC, as she has access to two hard CCs to give her even more breathing room mid combo. Isn't burst, as if you can Ani-cancel, you can unload your entire kit in under a second. A kit that can 100-0 squishies without trying if possessing at least 2-3 items. Her only weakness is she is relatively "frail" for a melee, only she gets away with much more durability than anyone else building like her could ever attempt.

Riven's only weakness is that she lacks ranged poke. Then again, GL staying at that range that you poke from, and still hitting her with her own mobility working in her favor. And if your spell is targetted? That means it is low range, and within Riven's EQQ range.

Riven has Lee Sin syndrome, where the only way she feels good for an opponent (for an equal skill level matchup) is for her to have her numbers so weak that they virtually don't exist.

Add on just a bit of CD to her E, lower damage on W, fix the increased attack speed bugs.

Baunjo2 votes

People would still complain no matter what amount of CDR or damage reduction is given to E and W. And attack speed increase bug? Are you talking about animation cancelling?

Celeste Benal6 votes

Remove Riven from game. Problem solved.

So fight Riven when she's 8 and 10? Got it. What if i'm levels 5 and 7 when she hits those respective levels?

You missed her spikes at level 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. Also the spike after she gets her first kill, after her team gets their first dragon, after her team gets their first turret. She also has the brutalizer power spike, the tiamat power spike, her first BF sword power spike, and her LW power spike.

You also missed the flaming power dip when the jungler takes the kill during a gank, the dip when she dies to the first gank, the dip after that where she buys wards instead of another longsword, and the massive power dip after she afks for no jungle helperino.

Baunjo6 votes

Spike after 1st kill? So every champion in the game? Spike after first dragon? So every champion in the game? Spike after first turret? So every champion in the game? Spike after brutalizer? So every champion who builds brutalizer first? Tiamat spike? So every champion who buys Tiamat? BF sword spike? So every champion who buys BF? LW spike? SO EVERY CHAMPION THAT BUILDS LAST WHISPER?

I swear you people act like Riven is some crazy exception that spikes with stat increases and NO OTHER CHAMPION does.

I main the top lane and I'll go ahead and say that this needs to stay...this is really how it is.

redniwediS9 votes

I also main top lane, but I also main Garen. To me it sounds like people are forgetting that counter picking is part of the game.

"I should be able to win lane forever with my signature champion, AD Morgana top. Anyone who denies me in lane must be NERFED!"

MilfHuntUnitXJ913 votes

When you think about it, this guide is serious! May come off as a troll at first.. but riven does need an early-mid game nerf because no melee can face a riven (except maybe wukong) and she has insane gap closers..

dEAdbUs4 votes

Riven counters Wuk by simply keeping her third Q charge up. If you'll try to come closer, Riven will knock up you with it, and you will get tons of unanswerable damage. If you'll try to engage when she wasted her third Q then you'll find that her Q is up already, thx to her Q's cd mechanics, and then you will be oneshotted. So Riven is one of best counters to Wuk.

Mr Broken Wings10 votes

level 3 and 6 are dangerous, pre 3 she is shit and 4-5 she will lose as well if you are not retarded/yasuo/nasus. Starting at level 9 she will be already outscaled by irelia and similar champions and your chainwest will make her unrelevant in lane if you didnt die 20x before. But hey, lets just make a circlejerk thread, thats a better idea.

Considering it has a cast time of about 0.1 seconds when you cancel the animation, it isn't bad.

arc951 votes

my guide

  1. play Yasuo(really any champ for that matter)...
  2. be happy with only going 0/3/0 in lane, while maintaining a slight cs advantage(why i choose cs'ing machines like Yasuo)
  3. begin to roam and go 7/0/3(ward, secure objectives, etc) and win game

Kappa

yay nibbers3 votes

You could just pick Garen, Singed, Renekton, etc. Counter her and all.

Old Man Teeto6 votes

While being out scaled you then watch the Riven CS easily under her turret, join mid-game team fights and pick up a dozen or so kills despite being down 30~cs and have three deaths.

Shosuko43 votes

I like it when I go from 0/3/0 to 7/0/3 in a match, really gives me a sense of accomplishment seeing those deaths fade away.

arc952 votes

all about da haxx brah... but no i meant go 7/0/3 after you start roaming to achieve a final score of 7/3/3 T^T
