I can't ever sem to stay ON people as ADC the way other players can

Strawberrycocoa··5 votes·719 views

One of things were like, when I play against enemy ADCs they stay on me no matter how I try to run, peppering me down. When I play AC enemies always manage to stay juuuuust out of my attack range and I can't reach them safely or stay on them. Double annoying when I can't even farm things without eating poke damage.

How the fuck do the rest of you get in range and STAY there?

who are you playing a lot of?

Strawberrycocoa3 votes

My ADCs tend to be Tristana or Jinx, but I'm also trying to pick up Varus a bit. Also considering learning Ezreal for his mobility tricks, but I have a hate-boner from playing against him a lot that makes the prospect a bit dis-satisfying.

so tristana can def run ppl down with her rocket jump since its a slow if you land on them but tbh a lot of that is going to be dependent on positioning and how the supports are playing (specifically in lane phase).

Strawberrycocoa1 votes

Iiiiii tend to get fucked in the not-fun way when I blow my Rocket Jump to engage, unless it's a guaranteed kill I can reset-jump away with anyway. Until they're in kill range I usually just sort of waddle up, then they run back, and I get maybe 1 shot off which they just lifesteal back quickly.

What runes and items do you like to build on Jinx?

I started playing ADC this season, and this is a big mystery for me. Like...I know how to attack move, and kite but the enemy ADC seems in a safer spot than I am in all stages of the game.

I don't get it.

Sometimes positioning yourself at an angle helps.

Like if you’re red side ADC and you force the enemy ADC down towards hugging the wall, they have a greater distance to cover if you were to run parallel with them rather than chase them from behind.

This is what i was going to say. It helps to preemtively move with your target to keep them in range.

Ashe main here with nearly 1 mil mastery on her and tons of marksmen experience. The number one thing that people new to the role or not great at it struggle with is knowing your attack range. Name the marksman/men you're playing and without looking it up can you tell me their attack range and if they have a range modifier what it goes up to. Can you ping the edge of your range in game? What about move speed? Do you know how long your attack animation is? These highly specific details are what separate mechanically intensive players from others. My game knowledge sucks because I make mistakes like getting overly aggresive, or not warding enough. But if I get the ball rolling I can get a solo pentakill just dueling people one after the other with superior mechanics.

So who are you playing and do you know their attack range?

Strawberrycocoa1 votes

My primary ADCs are Tristana and Jinx and... not really? Not by heart. I can't even remember how big one unit of range/movement in a game is (I think 100 units is equal to Teemo's model size, I think I saw once?)

Kaìju2 votes

Tristana starts a 550 and ends at I believe 676 which is 26 more that Caitlyn has since she gets 7 range per level with 18 levels but because level 1 is 550 it might only be 669 range if we don't count level 1 as part of her scaling. Jinx has 525 in minigun and gets up to 700 range with rockets, starting at 600 with rockets and gaining 25 per level. 100 units is a Teemo yes.

I have trouble visualizing that information in-game without constantly mousing over my Attack stat, to be honest. >_>

Trust me you get used to it after a long time. The important thing is to always pay attention to your range. You do that and you start to see when you out range people. As Ashe I can bully out a Vayne for having 50 less range by attacking her when she can't hit me back without walking into my supports range.

Ashe Approach Velocity (and phase rush - optional). You tag someone with an auto, they never escape.

Morticianjohn1 votes

Ashe Ashe is good because her auto attacks slow so it's easier to stick and easier to kite backwards. She really is great for new players and experienced players as well. Another option is Caitlyn who has a longer base auto range than the other marksman.

There is a lot of practice to kiting so maybe getting in there and practicing. After the auto you have to click to cancel the extra animation. IMO it's kinda stupid but there ends up being this huge gap between skilled players and unskilled. I haven't bothered to practice because, I'd much rather have fun when I play and practice is so boring but it is certainly the way to get better quicker.

Look up orb walking. It’s a fairly advanced technique that vastly increases your mobility, but gets harder the faster your attack speed. I can pretty much guarantee you that this is the difference you’re seeing between yourself and your opponents.

Is that where you attack then move to break the animation while the projectile is in flgiht? I've tried that but can't ever seem to get the timing right. Also, there's usually too much other shit going on for me to be able to do it right. Like enemy supports trying to peel me off, or incoming junglers, etc.

kattzkitti1 votes

To put it simply, yes. The faster you alternate between attack and movement, the faster you'll move forward while simultaneously attacking (up to just under your movement speed's limit, of course).

Unfortunately, until you learn how to orb walk, other orb walkers will just destroy you. Just the reality of the way the game works.

Strawberrycocoa1 votes

Guess I just gotta practice it more. Thanks.

Practice is the key to perfection, keep at it and you'll get it eventually.

Yeah, if you're not orb walking that is almost certainly the difference. Look up videos of it if you're not quite sure how to do it.

I prefer to bind my attack-move key to a thumb mouse button so I just alternate between thumb click and right click.

Try jhin, because his as stays the same.

Let them poke me all they want. I'll still try to get the cs before getting them. In fact, I'll even stay under the turret and wait for their minions to come. Feed off the minions until I got enough upgrades to take them down with ease. You get more gold from minions than you do with kills. So feeding off them at the start is the best thing to do in my opinion. Once fed and equipped, YOU CAN OVER POWER EM LIKE A BOSS AND THEIR ATTACKS WILL MEAN NOTHING.

Sohleks1 votes

You issue a new move command as soon as your attack legitimatizes moving in closer than your attack range between autos.

NekoniClaws1 votes

As much as people bash on ads as 'mindless rightclickers', it takes skill to do it right.

So I would suggest combining a few sessions of last-hit practice on your prefered ads with kiting practice. Just open a custom and kite the minions. Try aggressive kiting (so they can't escape) and defensive kiting. Just so you get used to your attack speed growth and range.

After that, it's practice. Working with supports is pretty hard. And different ADCs have different threat ranges and danger situations. -For example, Jhin can't easily approach a Nasus, but Lucian can dodge his wither.

Your safety range will also depend on your teamcomp, tanks and supports especially. Think how Thresh, Morganna and Janna can deal with a Leona- but Soraka can't.

AlienPrimate1 votes

Are you using attack move? That is shift+click if you don't know. It automatically moves you in range of the enemy closest to your cursor and attacks them.

Sire Hippington1 votes

Animation cancleing on AAs. It's not only used for kiteing, it also helps with sticking to your target.
