Azir listed as marksman?

Mage + Marksman, shared with Varus, Ezreal, Kennen and Kog'Maw.

Do people actually play him like this? Is it even viable?

He relies on AAs. He's a really ranged AP AOE marksman.

EZ Varus etc are not Primary : Mage, Secondary: Marksmen. They are Primary : Marksmen Secondary : Mage, and so they function differently from A long ranged sustained AoE DPS mage which is what Azir is. Cassiopiea would be the closest thing to an AP marksman, because she she's primarily does single target DPS like most of those ADCs. Azir is more like an Orianna (positioning soliders like she positions the ball) to do a lot of AoE damage. It just so happens instead of burst through a combo like orianna, it's sustained DPS through autos.

Actually, it's a common misconception to think his marksman tag means he is supposed to be a viable alternative to a proper AD Carry.

His marksman tag is actually meant to clue people in as to how he scales and how his damage is applied. A marksman has multiplicative scaling off 3 stats, AD, attack speed and critical strike chance. Azir, like a marksman has multiplicative scaling unlike other mages that scale in a linear fashion, mainly off AP alone. Azir scales off attack speed, CDR and AP, he is ranged and his damage is sustained. All these are the qualities he has in common with marksmen, hence he is listed as a marksman.
