How do you counter build Gnar?

Eedat··2 votes·5,507 views

No, this is not a "OMG GNAR OP PLEASE NERF QQ" thread. Looking for legitimate advise on how to build against him as a tanky melee top laner.

Do you build armor to deal with his autos and Qs? Or MR to deal with his Hyper procs? Anyone have a breakdown of what % of Gnars damage is AD vs AP early game? Any tips?

Edit: what about flat armor vs armor+hp? Like item 3110 vs item 3143? Would that minimize his AD harrass while limiting the AP %HP damage from hyper?

You mean magic vs physical.

Either way, it's recommended to build armor first because 90% of Gnar's rush bork -> full tank anyway.

I don't think I've every seen Gnar rush Blade of the Ruined King, except for shortly after he was released.

Most Gnar's I've seen will rush either Frozen Mallet or Black Cleaver, get a defensive item or two, and then get the other.

Down here in bronze, rushed BORK Gnar is a very, very real thing.

I mean, it's actually not so bad, but I am more used to see meta sheeps buy exactly the same thing than in competitive :o

That's the oldschool build, but these days items like Black Cleaver or Frozen Mallet seem to be favored over Blade of the Ruined King.

Anyway, most of Gnar's damage is physical. For the Hyper procs I find mercury's treads is enough to deal with it early on, and it mitigates his heavy CC as well.

Mobile champions who can fuck him up early game when he's squishy are good against him. I like to play Wukong into him. Gnar can't handle your early game damage, and you can trade on him so quickly he usually can't E away.

I've never seen a gnar rush bork since he was released.

Don't fight him when he's mega or about to become mega.

Personally I pick Garen into him. It's an interesting matchup, and I like the challenge.

When it comes to building I get two longswords and boots before I even start on defensive items. He can't kill you if he's dead, right? Play smart, don't let him cut off your ability to escape, and try your best to bait out his jump. A few trades where you show him why your champion has to be immobile should get him to respect your damage enough to keep him poking but not engaging without jungle or mid help.

If he's only poking at you your defensive items will mean a whole lot more, rather than when he chases you from one end of the lane to the other auto attacking.

Just remember, you don't have to kill him in order to win lane.

I can see this working, like maybe hitting Gnar with Q > E after he jumps over you?

FM Gnar getting popular too. Mercs/Swifties are not a bad alternative to ninja tabis if he's rushing FM. His plays revolve around slows and, when mega, CC.

Sustain, as Gnar can poke - is Vampiric Sceptre viable for your champ?

Armor always a good bet, though unfortunately there's no Armor/AD combo item (RIP Atma's).

Get item 3082 the armor is a huge help and the attack speed slow reduce the number of W procs he can get off. Also once he get in mega and use his jump and headbutt, punish him since he lack escape/cc.

I understand that Gnar has many champs that he is weak against. This is more about if he picks after you and you dont have the liberty of counter picking him. Thanks for the tips though :)

  1. Go Ryze
  2. Build item 3070
  3. Stack it in 5 minutes using your own tears
  4. ???
  5. Profit

most of his damage is physical, but he also deal some considerable magic damage, so you when it comes to defensive stats you should start with building something with both armor and hp

Depends on the champion you are playing too, but I'd avoid sunfire because in my experience, it just helped him generate his fury faster in close combat. I think if you are trying to play defensive frozen heart is a good option. If not just out damage him ;) Rengar

If you're one of the ones that stack hp build Mercs then go about your business. Otherwise F Heart is one of the best pickups vs him cuz it reduces the Hyper procs AND his auto damage, makes it harder for him to attrition you via waiting out your mana (if you are one of the ones where thats a problem).

Play a champion that can solo a jungle camp(wolves) at level 1. Then b and buy max health pots. Use tp to get back to lane before he puhes minions to tower. You now have a level advantage and 5 pots to out sustain. The lane will autopush to your tower. Use the shots to your advantage. Generally let the full health melee minions tank two shot then last hit them. Farming caster minions varies from champ to champ. While you are under tower he will probably turn into megagnar. Wait that out, and when he transforms back you have a chance to all in him.

Even if you don't all in him you should be able to out sustain his early game. From there you can farm until either he backs or your tp comes off CD. Tanky 1 item powerspikes are cheaper and stronger than phage. Hopefully you can take it from here.

Pick irelia and trade hard with him

Other than that get armour your mr and runes should be enough to keep you safe.

depends on your champ, if you have burstpotential and gapclose/cc, just go agressive and burst him in miniform, he sucks in short trades. If you can't reach or burst him, item 3082 is the best option, 80% of his damage is physical, though 1v1 in minignar, it's probably more a 60/40 split. The AS slow on it also helps a bit vs hyper. Getting item 3009 can help alot, especially if he goes item 3022 , as the ms allows you to better dodge his Q and get away befor he can proc his W more often. wether you take item 3143 oritem 3110 depends mostly on champ and preferation. Most gnars rush BC, so raw armor isn't the best, but his W has magical % damage, so hp+armor isn't to great either, so i guess it evens out. If you want the cdr and mana, get item 3110, if want to be a bit more beefy and have the aoe-slow active, get item 3143. getting item 3083 once you can hit 3000hp is also a good idea, as it allows you to recover very fast from his harras. item 3077 on ad champs also is a good idea, as it allows you to fast clear minionwaves without takeing to much harras from him. item 3512 can healp alot to, set up the portal behind your tower and roam to other lanes, the voidlings will pick up some farm and keep your tower save while you hopefully can make a play elsewhere.

Armor for the most part, along with merc treads for hyper procs and his CC.
