"Make a bot take over when a player AFK's"

While this seems like a good idea in theory, there are multiple things wrong with making a bot take over when someone AFK's.

Firstly, dozens of champions don't have bots. A lot of champions like Azir Ekko Zed LeeSin and a lot more don't have bots made simply because it would be so difficult to make an AI that can use their kit better than a bronze 5 first timing them (No exaggeration). So would the bunch of champs with no bots just not get an AI or would they get an AI that ints?

Secondly, bots suck. Think about it, would you rather fight a 4v5 where one player isn't giving any gold, or fight a 4v5 where one player is giving significantly more gold than everyone else? Even worse, people would be able to abuse the bot by killing it 3-4 times, having a tank or something die to it to reset it's gold, and just farm crazy amounts of gold that way. (If someone wants me to explain that more clearly just say so, I'm not sure how well I worded that lol)

For me, the best way to deal with AFK's is rather simple. Make it so no one in the game gains or loses LP, except for the AFK who loses triple what he normally would have lost.

  1. would kinda be unfair, because you have to consider when they went afk. going afk 25 minuets in is a completely different impact from leaving 7 minuets in.

  2. leading off on first point, if they left 25 minuets in, everyone just wasted 25 minuets for jack squat

  3. actually even our bots are kinda buggy rn, if you go into intro or intermediate bots they afk themselves sometimes (yes you read that right, sometimes they wig out and dont leave fountain after dying)

they also cant jungle.

An added challenge for the bot replacement scenario - MMR matching. Even if you make a bot like OpenAI (the bot that's beating DotA pros) to work for all the champions (I believe it only works for 18 in DotA right now), you've still got the issue of telling it that it needs to make mistakes X% of the time, where that corresponds to what the average person in that elo would do. Just as bad as having a bot that is a terrible feeder is having a situation where the bot plays better than the person who's AFKing, so they just go AFK before a fight and the bot wins for them before they come back.

If you were to try and use an OpenAI like bot, you'd need to feed it training game data from the middle of each tier (Bronze 3, Silver 3, Gold 3, etc.) and from the edges of each tier (Bronze 5, Bronze 1-Silver 5, Silver 1-Gold 5, etc.). From there it could guess what the player's skill should be on the champion. It would need to have some sort of responses to pings (gather for an objective or a push). That's not accounting for what happens when a champion has been reworked or a build completely destroyed.

All of this also assumes that the OpenAI system can be run efficiently enough to replace normal bots and take over a game. If it takes too many server resources, then you can bet it wouldn't be possible.
