How does matchmaking even pair some of these people? I had a game today where my team was: unranked (me, silver 4 last season) Silver unranked Gold Gold
Their team had a plat, 3 golds, and a silver.
Can someone explain how the match making system works to pair people up exactly? I'm not sure myself and I can't find anything other than posts from 2 years ago.

Deep Terror Nami1 votesNormal match MMR is separate from Ranked. Someone can be Bronze rank but play lots of Normals and actually have a Platinum skill and MMR there, and also someone could be Platinum in Ranked but very rarely do Normals so when they do they are matched with more like a Silver MMR.
This I think is mostly intended for different modes such as Twisted Treeline and ARAM, but applies between Ranked and Unranked SR too. This is so you aren't overwhelmed by being new to a mode or just trying to play something new without bringing it in your competitive Ranked match (for example, if I want to practice Yasuo, I don't want to have to play against high Gold+ mid laners, so I practice it in Normals where the average is closer to Silver).
