Sooo . . . is Azir a Battle Mage or an Artillery Mage?

If he is supposed to be a battle mage, he shouldn't have that high amounts of high ranged ability poke. Like you wouldn't give Brand that kind of ability range, right?

At the same time, if he is supposed to be an artillery mage, he shouldnt be so safe and have this much defensive capabilities, with his Q-E and ultimate. Would you want a Xerath or a Ziggs to have that? Hell no.

Pick one and balancing him will be much easier. If you insist that he's both he'll either be sub-par or overpowered for the rest of his existence because this way he has no inherent weaknesses in his kit.

I'd rather play with, as and against a Battle Mage Azir tbh. However, if Riot were to figure out a more suitable, interesting and thematic E and R I'd be all for maintaining the long range Hyper carry role. I keep hearing that there's no way for him to be a hyper carry with his current E and R, so maybe it would be easier for him to be a battle mage with his Shurima shuffle.

He's both, which s the problem. one roll covers the others weaknesses and vice versa, which is why he's a supposed candidate for a rework.

Champions that have I identity crises (Ie do to much of everything and accel at it) are usually the ones to get reworked before others.

Either. Or both.

Or neither. Whatever you prefer, because the new classifications are all but completely arbitrary and have little reflection on the game or the champion. Riot even acknowledged this by stating that champions can be a mix of multiple ones, ruining the point of this classification system in the first place.

because the new classifications are all but completely arbitrary

I need to express my disagreement. Vast majority of new classification fits champions in question very well. It is Azir's extremely overloaded kit that makes him impossible to properly classify, as he has properties of all 3 classes of mages, as well as ones of a marksman and a disruptor, depending on what Azir's player actually chooses to do. This is also big reason behind his "yorification".

If that really, truly is the reason for the problem... then why isn't Xerath a problem to an equal extent as Azir? Why isn't Braum equally a problem? Why doesn't Lulu need to be nerfed to unplayability and reworked? Or to use Riot's examples: Why isn't Varus as broken as Azir?

Because falling under multiple of these arbitrary classification, which Riot themselves say MANY champions do, is not at all the reason. And they are arbitrary when an Artillery Mage has more burst than a Burst Mages and Burst Mages have comparable range to Artillery Mages.

Hypercarry poke mage. He's basically Kayle.

Azir is neither. The emperor is classified as a hybrid disruptor marksman.

He is a battle/dps Mage hybrid.

What planet are you from where you think Artillery Mage was ever an/the intention for Azir?
