Would it be possible for Sandbox mode to be useable without internet and just through the client?

I feel like if I'm bored somewhere with my laptop or sitting in a long car ride, I could test some things out without having to have internet.

I'm no expert on this shit but you'd have to have the entire game on your computer, which means you could fuck around with the files super easy, which means scripting just got ten times easier.

The whole game is accessed through the internet portal so no it would require a completely different platform and huge financial investment.

In what way? All Riot would have to do is have an option for people to download the game for offline use (4-8 Gigs) and people can use sandbox mode however they like.

That would be leaving a few things that are seriously important:

  1. 4-8 gigs is WAAAY too small. Tons of things are serverside. For example, the amount of damage you do is sent from the server. 35-45 gigabytes would be more accurate, since you're still using all the game's data (skins, champions, models, particles, etc.)

  2. If they did it like that, the practice tool's files could be easily modified and put into the REAL game, changing anything you want. Do we really want 7000 movement speed Talons that start at Level 18 2 minutes in?

Yeah, this would just assist hackers/scripters,

Easily modified and put into the real game? I'm sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about... Yes it could be modified for 3rd party programs offline but it could not be put into live games.

I meant 3rd party programs. I don't know why I worded it like that.

Oh you're saying they could create an offline version of league of legends?

No, it absolutely wouldn't be that big. You've downloaded all the skins, champions, models, particles, etc. already, it's what you do every time you patch.

What's left on the server side is the code that takes "hey, I right clicked on this guy, what happens next?" and gives a response for what happens next. Even then some of that already exists Client Side as a way to hide latency issues (For example, your local computer knows that if you right click on location X, Y it should path you to that location, playing your walk animation and not moving through walls). That code is going to be relatively small compared to what you've already downloaded.

Even if you were doing it in the most un-optimized way you could think of it still wouldn't be 35 GB.

An Ubuntu Server has a minimum requirement of 1 GB of disk space. If Riot is beyond lazy they tell you "Here's the server OS with our software installed, run it in a Virtual Machine", so you'd be looking at a download in the 2-8 GB range. That number would be even smaller if they ported it to Windows/Mac OS.

The actual hindrances are:

  1. Not wanting to port the server to Mac OS/Windows as a stand alone application
  2. Not wanting to have to try and make the server + game work at the same time on the low-end computers they officially support
  3. Not wanting to have to make any serverside changes to not only their servers but to this new application as well
  4. Not wanting to potentially expose any vulnerabilities in their server side.
  5. Not wanting people to mod it into a local server with everything unlocked and URF 24/7

I don't work on Practice tool myself, this breakdown looks pretty accurate though from what I understand. Completely get the desire to be able to use practice tool anywhere, anytime, but the potential for exploits etc that creates alone is a really big problem.

Could there at least be the possibility of in the future watching replays/using practice mode while in queue?

Gesterr1 votes

That's actually a reasonable and awesome idea!

Belongs to Scarra tbh :) I heard him comment about it during the patch rundown and wanted to ask directly about it.

Can you just lock the files? and if people try to open them it deletes xD?

AdeBug1 votes

can you just restrict the copying of files in only 1 location on someone else's computer? in 2017? across all OS's? also a locked file is hackable

Fondling Gems1 votes

Yeah just too easy to break open files, especially if you are directly handing us the tool that opens and unincrypts them. It is like putting something in a tin can then handing them a can opener.

If I have the server that is using the files directly hosted on my computer and the files directly on my computer then it wouldn't be unduly hard to find the encryption key and make a copy of it myself to get access to the files.

You could but all you would end up doing is delaying them.

Just saying Dota has an offline function and its like 11 gigs big.

Using the existing Steam Infrastructure.

I just want to be able to invite friends. So I can actually test things against real people

Ahristocats1 votes

in dota2 it's possible

so i guess riot can do it?

Dota2 uses existing Steam infrastructure

if someone can explain to me why league can't do it then i'll take it

Basically: They haven't (as far as we know) developed the infrastructure. Doing so costs money, time, and manpower. Both for development and testing.

First they would need to analyze if the potential gains would be worth the investment. (will this make enough people like the game more to the point they will buy more things / will it bring in more new players)

THEN they develop it.

I would be shocked if this idea had never come up in discussion internally.
