What Determines If A Skill Fizzles Out On Death?

Some skills, such as Velkoz W and E, will fizzle out even after they've been cast on death. Xerath has the same problem on his W and Q.

However, other skills still land / continue despite a champion's death, such as Kayn's W, Ahri's Q, etc.

Is this just spaghetti code or is there some rhyme or reason that some skills continue past death? "Skills with a delay" doesn't seem to be an all--encompassing reason, since Vel's W and Kayn's W work in nearly identical ways.

Don't forget sivir's Q. it will return to her body after thrown. It's funny when I Q with her, die, and the guy who killed me dies too getting hit in the back with it.

Don't all those skills you mentioned fizzling have channels? I know ahri q is a channelless spell

I'm not 100% certain on what qualifies as a channel. Kayn is actually unable to move or do anything else while his W builds up, but Vel'koz's W is essentially the same type of "building" rectangular hitbox, and has no channel to it. It's actually the only skill in his kit that he can cast without stopping.

It's champion specific.

That's quite a lot of hidden power there. :/

In case of Ahri and Sivir case is pretty simple, the spell doesn't check wether the caster HP is 0 or 100% but merely check its position. Is easier to code that way and creates less lagg when executed (as it has one less check to do) and over all is pretty consistent with abilities that return to the caster as all of them finish their path after death. Gnar boomerang for example will also return even if ganr dies mid way (although that one returns to a specific point rather than gnar)

As for Velkoz and Kayn the difference relies in that Vel W is considered 2 spells while Kayn is considered a single spell with a delay (probably coded as a channel) so much like Ez arcane shift or Tristana rocket jump it will finish the animation, again this is pretty consistent as other similar abilities finish their cast even if you die, for example Vi will do full damage with her ult when you kill her when you are already on the air. I don't understand why vel E don't persist, that one is the only one that truly seems like it should persist as it is a projectile with some CC attached to it. Similarly Xerath W shoudl still hit while his Q shouldn't.

im not sure about Kayn but "boomerang" abilities Ahri Q Ekko Q Gnar Q Talon Q Sivir Q (all q's neat huh) will always return to the champion no matter what state they're in.
