Imagine Mundo getting reworked into a transforming champ...

For some reason I would be strangely okay with that (as long as he can keep his cleaver).

I mean, he's pretty much the incredible Hulk crossed over with the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (+ Zaun crazy science). Transforming would actually make sense - it should be similiar to Gnar, but a little more controllable.

Also, Mundo is a famous neuroscientists and biologist... but right now this doesn't translate in his gameplay. We always see "The Hulk", but never the "Bruce Banner" behind him.

We all know he's in need for some reworking love, so I wonder... would you guys approve of his theme being expanded like this?

EDIT: Another post from me, someone suggested to put it up here:

It defines him right now because he has nothing else. Even his current build is just an effect pf poor design, nothing that actually gives any identity. The only skill that does that is the cleaver throw.

I still want him to have that meatshield identity, but it shouldn't be that only thing that makes a character. His theme is actually, if we go by lore: Genius Doctor, Biologist, Medicine + crazy science + THE HULK. And that's the elements that should define his mechanics. His tanky hulk form should be still the strongest, no doubt on that.

Another model would be, to make the transformation happen slowly. You build up ressource as you take damage for example (Adrenalin maybe), and with each 25% your stats and one of your abilities changes - until you reach 100% where you will stay for some time to go batshit crazy.

Let's say one of his skills is a skill to heal teammates and himself during a shot channel. Now, with the adrenalin flowing through his body and the chages in his physis the doctor can no longer operate properly (fingers too big/too shakey). Instead, he can now throw his cleaver around ^^

Also, just because he could be played as a support it doesn't mean he wouldn't still function in toplane or the jungle. He's a crazy doctor... I could imagine him on botlane...

"Mundo will... SLUUURP stich you back together... but for that... Mundo need new leg... AHH SLUUURP Mundo see enemy carry... Wait for Mundo please while Mundo gets you new leg..."

But that's his secret... he's always DrMundo .

More seriously, though, I completely agree that there's nothing about him that really indicates his past as a brilliant scientist. He might as well be one of the original doctor's test subjects (and he is, to some extent). There's a clear discrepancy between his lore and his in-game persona, but then again there's a lot to Mundo that's to love (unlike, say, old Sion , who was a walking pile of corny one-liners), so perhaps it's his lore that should change to suit the character we know and not the opposite.

In gameplay terms, I agree that Mundo's kit needs to be made a bit more interesting, but I don't think it would be right to turn him into a transforming champion. Gnar himself already has a pretty good Jekyll/Hyde dichotomy (squishy cute furball versus giant terrifying monster), and having another with a similar theme would tread on his toes. There's also a lot to Mundo that would likely not fit very well on a smaller champion (how he gets to play with health and health regeneration, for example), so I'd be more in favor with adjusting his kit to suit just a big ol' tanky Mundo, rather than the Mundo we know and love plus a smaller dude. Even then, there's a lot in his kit that doesn't fully correspond to his theme either (why does a giant roided-up mook summon orbiting balls of fire?).

Well, of course I wouldn't want the Mundo we all love to vanish from the game. This is why I proposed a transforming system (it doesn't have to be binary, there could be also different "levels" of transformation, with each Mundo gets more hulky and starts speakign weirder ^^).

In my mind I see big mundo on one side, and a dude wearing torn up lab coat and dragging the oversized cleaver along on the other side. (Honestly, that cleaver is actually fucking huge. Small mundo couldn't use it as a weapon, but more as a shield while he tries to get his tranformation elixir (or whatever) ready).

Also this would allow us to give even a bit more strenght to the "big mundo", since the transformation wouldn't be always aviable; as well as make him a more complex champion that is a bit more than just a tank. The possibilities are endless for this. How about making his small form a support? He IS a doctor after all, so he should be able to patch up his teammates somehow... (this would imply a binary tranformation system). but there are also other possibilites for this.

There's a core difference to Gnar thought: Gnar, thematically, is a ticking time bomb. Mundo on the other hand is science gone crazy. His tranformation theme would be extremly different from Gnar's and a bit more controlled.

But that's the thing: if there's one thing that defines Mundo, it's that he's a meat shield. He's not exactly a tank, functionally speaking, but he's one of the tankiest characters in the game, if not the tankiest. Right now he plays well as a bruiser top/jungler, and I think that's a fine place for him to be (there's nothing about him that really screams support), so I'd rather he contribute a more restrained set of bonuses to his team (i.e. tankiness, some crowd control and damage) than he expand into roles that don't really relate to his current theme or playstyle (namely, a support role, particularly a squishy support). Whereas even Gnar builds a mix of tankiness and damage, currently Mundo pretty much always goes full tank, which would mean his smaller, squishier form would still be extremely tanky. Perhaps he should be encouraged to build damage items as well, but that would cement his bruiser role and not work very well for a potential support Mundo kit. Ultimately, a lot of what makes Mundo Mundo (e.g. eating up huge amounts of damage, going where he pleases) is tied specifically to his tankiness, and I think that is what his whole kit should be based around.

I would recommend adding the second model to the main post, because it's brilliant. Mind if I borrow something like that for a champ concept?

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

You can borrow it, but please link the thread if you copy it 1:1 (proper citation and stuff) ^^

Mundo ultimate skin anyone? Sign me up.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Well, I'd prefer it if they would update his legendary skin to todays standards of a "legendary"... ^^

I hear that if you take out the syringe, he becomes a cute furry yordle...

(full credit to whoever made this joke originally, I sadly cannot remember your username, but if you are reading this just know that you're fucking hilarious)

Plot Twist: Mundo is actually female. The hulk tranformation just looks too masculine and we all were fooled xD

This was Mundo.

Holy... we have come a long way, haven't we? xD

The model quality is total crap, but here we see how Riot tried to get the "Doctor" feeling in... something tells me they failed horribly back then, but back then they also had less experience and ressources when creating champs.

Hmmm I wonder if we ever get an ultimate skin that is the yordle-version of a champ... would be an interestinc concept xD

CubedJustice1 votes

Yordle mundo too strong, rito please nerf. If only people played mundo...

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

The problem is his kit. While it can get the job done if used right, it's simply clunky and boring to use. Apart from the cleaver it's use and forget types of skills and even the iconic Q becomes more a mindless spamming skill that required zero thinking.

Mundo is somewhere in between tanks and fighters right now: eithe rhe protects his teams backline, but fails to do so since he lacks significant cc (compared to most support tanks), but as a fighter he just doesn't kill people fast enough - and can be really easily kited, even with the ult.

Defensive or offensive, no matter how you want to play, there's a lot of other champs who get the repsctive job done better, way more efficient and with a lot more fun to play.

CubedJustice1 votes

I disagree with the kiting part. It's not even extremely difficult to catch up with an Ezreal as Mundo. Probably get kited by Kalista, though.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

And it would mean using your ult for engaing, something you should avoid if possible (unless you are low hp already so you don't waste heal power).

Also the Ezreal will rarely be alone, he will have a support peeling for him. One cc, Ez jump and then mundo can forget ever catching him... Especially when he's blue-build Ez. It's easier to peel mundo away from a carry than other fighters or tanks who have way stronger engages and gapclosers.

CubedJustice1 votes

You underestimate the slow on his cleaver.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Actually no, since it can be dodged. Pretty easy now since most players are used to invisible Nida spears by now... xD

If he hit's it, well yay. Too bad it can get blocked easily xD

Also I don't like how the cleaver is ingame... his hulky-abilities should have more combative usage (think of mega Gnar) But with a weapon. (think of mega-gnar mixed with riven. Sounds scary, but also awesome). Right now it's just a spamming skill with no thinking behind it. It doesn't have the "OMMPHF!" you would expect Mundo's abilties to have (for a champ of his stature and size)

I never really understood why he has a limitless supply of cleavers... how about adding a chain to it? If it hits it slows, and you can reactivate it to draw the target a little closer (only a little, mind you ^^) and deal bonus damage.

Let's expand on that... swining the cleaver at the chain in a circle to go through the teamfight like a murderous madman... isn't that his title anyways? xD

Laughing Fish1 votes

The thing with Mundo is that his in-game doesn't fit his lore at all. His lore describes him as an intelligent, sadistic serial killer. In-game he is the incredible hulk.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Right now he isn't even the hulk. The hulk does awesome things. Smashing buildings, smashing you. SMASHING EVERYTHING! More like Mega-Gnar. Mundo right now is... well... a bit meh compared to that

Transgressor1 votes

One can only wish considering the current state of things... :/

On a side-note I think that despite the jekyllxhyde concept being fucking awesome it'd propably turn him into another shitty version of Gnar: a weak early state that bullies you out of lane and a bulky late state that's just too bothersome to deal with. And god knows this game doesn't need another Gnar right now...

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Well, Mini-Gnar is SUPPOSED to be annoying. He can't do much else on the other hand.

Mundo's theme does not fit an annoying character, not even if he had a "small" form. He's a way more serious character, similiar to Singed in terms of personality (murderous tendencies + science + genius).

The best way would be to make his small form (if they ever give him one) a supportive role (or self-buff). He's a doctor after all while also focussed on doping. Imagine a scrawny dude in a labcoat starting swinging the cleaver that is as big as him around... the result of dangerous doping and modification. But if he dopes too much he slowly changes into the big purple hulk form...

SlushieDee1 votes

Walter White with a cleaver?

Meep Man1 votes

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhh.... thats all I have to say on the matter. Its both ways for me. On one side we get more lore and maybe a more interesting kit, on the other we lose the DrMundo we love half the time or more

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

I think it's a great chance to give our purple giant some depth and character development xD
