I feel like the Yorick rework was a massive letdown

EDIT: I think I made people think something entirely different than the point I'm trying to get across. Yes, old Yorick was shit, I do not want his entire kit 1:1 in the rework.

However, I do want different ghouls that do different things. I don't want his only skill late game to be a good split pusher. I don't want him to have this stupid wall ability that I feel like doesn't make sense thematically.

Just because they rework a champion and it's better than what it used to be doesn't mean it's good. If you take a 3/10 and make it a 4/10 it's still technically bad by the standard. Now that's just my opinion, I think new Yorick missed the mark and is still, overall, a boring champion.

None of his old abilities actually remained intact, they just made sure he still had his ghouls, but all of them stripped of their originality.

I used to go home and just play Yorick for 10 games straight, but he isn't even fun anymore. Granted I'm sure the enjoyment I found in Yorick was due to him being bad and unplayed rather than his kit being well designed or cool.

However, even considering all of that I still feel like Riot could have made his kit well designed or cool and still similar to old Yorick. I miss his 3 different ghouls that did different things. As a matter of fact, I wish he had four of them instead like Udyr and one of them you just wouldn't fully spec into. Instead, you just get four of the same ghoul that all do the same thing and his only quality about him is that he can split push. He isn't even really a good duelist compared to some of the other meta top laners.

I know this is somewhat of a ranty post, but I'm just honestly curious if Riot ever plans to go back to Yorick or design a new champion that feels more similar to old Yorick.

Ngl, the enjoyment you found was partly because if even allowed to be kinda okay Yorick was one of the most busted champions in League. Topped off with his abysmal pick rate, you'd rarely find players that knew what to do against a decent Yorick. A lot of his fun came from being an good but hella nerfed champ that no one knew about so he always had an easy game in the hands of a Yorick main.

New Yorick was abused the same way recently, that's why Riot nerfed him. I guess he wasn't hella nerfed, but he wasn't played much, nobody knew what to do against him, and simply because of this he'd take towers fairly easily and duel a lot of people not knowing how much damage he could dish.

Old playstyles are deleted for a reason. They were unhealthy for the game.

I agree that it's unhealthy for the game. I just wish old Yorick was completely scrapped for new Yorick. I feel like it was a massive letdown for me as somebody who played a lot of Yorick.

I still want each individual ability to be a different ghoul. I don't like each ghoul doing the same thing. I don't like the way Yorick has to stack Q to get his ghouls I thought there were plenty of more ways to make Yorick more intuitive than that.

you speak as if his new playstyle is healthy...

The other problem I have with the argument is that if old playstyles are deleted because they're unhealthy. Then why does Riot make new champions that are equally unhealthy for the game?

It's obvious Riot reworked him because he was not played and he didn't make them money, and that's a completely fine reason to. However, I wish some of his old kit had remained intact.

Old kits were unhealthy because on the whole, the majority of them followed similar design patterns. Ergo, when they became problems for the game, these kits have been habitually replaced. As for making unhealthy champions now, that's uncharted territory for them. Most new champions are trying to change some element of the game and bend the rules in a new way, and since none of the new kits are really similar to older kits, there's very little understanding on how these new kits will interact with the game as a whole until they've been live for a while. Zoe, for instance, uses RNG and interacts differently with Summoner Spells, and it wasn't until very recently when people began to realize that this was one of the huge problems that was making her unhealthy for gameplay. So it's all new to them, and they're unaware that something might break the game because they're taking completely new risks in design. You can't compare the homogenous older kits with an overarching poor design trends with the new kits where each one does something totally different and interacts with the game in unique ways that's never been done before.

It's obvious Riot reworked him because he was not played and he didn't make them money, and that's a completely fine reason to. However, I wish some of his old kit had remained intact.

Old Yorick's kit followed a very old design pattern of uninteractivity and boring gameplay that made him excel against enemies when strong because all of his power was in his pets instead of him as a whole. To even deal with Old Yorick, you had to get through 4 pets screaming in your face, and that was extremely hard to deal with if he was even remotely strong. His new kit actually did keep several elements of his old kit, such as allowing him to summon minions and having those minions scale with his stats. He also still has a slow in his E, and he still controls a very large ghost pet as his ultimate. He just doesn't have the insanely difficult to deal with multitude of pets in his kit that were problems in his old one, and he's also got a lot more tools to be useful in the game post laning phase. Old Yorick basically fell off the face of the map post laning, because his kit was completely unsuited to team fighting, so he essentially was dead weight and had to hope he was so far ahead he could make a larger impact splitting or something.

This post is quite long, but I'll try to hit on the most important marks of what you said:

You said most of the new champions are trying to change some element of the game and bend rules in a way and that's why we figure out they're not healthy sometimes, which is a fair point, especially when using Zoe as the prime example of this argument.

My question is what is the excuse for champions that have similar styles of play to champions that have already been released for a while and have similar interactions to the previous champions that have also been noted as unhealthy? For example, Aatrox is really not that intuitive when it comes to design and has completely failed as a rework to a degree. While I agree he was due for a rework the new Aatrox is equally stupid to play against as the old Aatrox when Riot really didn't take any risks with the champion other than completely removing old Aatrox's identity thematically.

The second point I can't argue with when it comes to Yorick just being "uninteractive" to play against. You're simply correct, I definitely think he needed to be changed. The part I disagree with is when you say that "all of his power was in his pets instead of him as a whole." Now I don't quite understand what you mean by that. Old Yorick's pets were not nearly as strong as the 4 ghouls he can get now. What made his ghouls strong were the abilities themselves that just happened to make a ghoul. I probably need further elaboration to see where you're coming from because I don't quite understand it.

I don't understand how he's similar because he kept a slow and ghouls. Aatrox kept a knockup, his revive, and his auto having a passive damage buff and he isn't even anything like old Aatrox. I feel like this point is just null.

His pets were not hard to deal with I don't understand why you think this, I feel like his new pets are harder to deal with, which I actually like, but they're stale and don't really do anything which is my problem and why I think the rework failed as a whole. The old ghouls literally did nothing except be there and made Yorick broken because his passive didn't make sense thematically.

I don't think Yorick fell off the face of the map post laning, while he did fall off he was still useful late game because of his Ult (which also needed a rework I can agree with). However, him being completely dead weight late game sounds like something somebody who's played Yorick twice would say. I'd argue new Yorick also suffers from exact same reason. If he gets behind he becomes dead weight and needs to hope he can get ahead early so he could make an impact splitting.

These are just my thoughts on your post because I feel like people put new Yorick on this pedestal because old Yorick sucks, but this Yorick sucks too. That's why I think the new Yorick rework was a letdown.

It’s much less toxic to play against then his old version.

Is it now?

Old yorick was a lane bully heavily gated by high mana costs and outsode of lane his only use was a crappy damage sponge and ulting a his carry.

This new yorick is just as bad if not worse than the old one. A lane bully who doesnt have mana issues (who does nowadays) and his only really use is to get two or more people to come stop his split push

Its the exact same with Illaoi

new yorick is one of the annoyingly one-note champs in the game. his viability in any given state of the game pretty much entirely revolves around "can I split push"

it's really lame

As someone who mained both yoricks for a while, this kit is better. His old kit had some major problems. First, his passive was just a stat-check. His ghouls were interesting, yes, but the problem arose when he could point and click you for a heal and minion, slow you in an aoe, and then walk up and shovel you. His ult was awesome, but nobody, and I mean NOBODY knew what it did. I had an Ashe die one time and try to recall, then spam wtf in chat. After that I stopped using his ult to help.

Nowadays, he's super, super similar. His q takes up both old q AND e as a heal and auto reset. Just so happens ghouls need graves now. His w is brand new and I love it, his e aggros all ghouls and slows. Better than old w, I've gotta say. His ult is now what yorick mains used their ult for. Personal damaging assistant.

Everything was retained, made healthier, the only thing you miss is the perceived unique points of the ghouls.

What are you talking about, Yorick is an insane duelist. He can fight Darius and Jax 1v1 at level 6.
