Why'd he join the League of Legends?

So he could take people's gold?

Kill people?

It honestly doesn't say why he joined League, but I'm pretty sure that goes for most champions.

I'm not sure how you missed it, but there's an event called the Great Retcon. The League of Legends and the Institute of War are no longer canon.

It's still the name of the game, however the in game experience is no longer tied to the lore.

League of Legends. Because you almost never change your product name unless you want to cause massive confusion. Especially when it's as popular as LoL is.

So is The Great Retcon just a way for Riot to cover up all the missing lore?

No. They felt they had written themselves into a corner with the way the Institute worked, so they removed it. Many pieces of the old lore are still canon, however they feel there is more story potential without some super OP peace keeping organization keeping everyone in line.

They are starting to tell more stories and flesh out the world again, so if you see any holes in it you want filled you can easily bring it up as a suggestion for the next story.

Even before the Great Retcon, several champions didn't mention the League in their lores. But y'know, the Great Retcon. Tahm Kench didn't join the League because it no longer exists.
