Let's talk about the rune Celerity.

Snowman Arc··11 votes·9,467 views

Celerity is a rune that grants 3% bonus MS and also any bonus MS you get (boots, items, abilities) is converted through a small percentage into adaptive AD or AP. So, for example, Pantheon who has 355 MS would get a slightly bigger bonus to his MS than a Janna at 315 MS, therefore a bigger adaptive outcome as well.

Currently on the PBE, they are changing this rune so that it grants 1.5% bonus MS, but doubling the % adaptive stats it grants, which lets me wonder:

WHAT'S THE REASON BEHIND THIS RUNE? WHAT IS IT SUPPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH?

One would assume that it would be good for champion who have a lot of MS through their abilities. Master Yi R, Viktor Q, Sivir passive and R are good examples. These champions gain a small boost to their AD or AP and that's fine. The thing is, the MS stat is generally hard to manage. It's hard to buy items to increase or decrease it, apart from boots and it's a very important stat to have, which is why you see a lot of junglers picking it to navigate through the jungle, alongside Waterwalking. Also, it's a go-to choice for champions who don't have a good secondary tree. For example, most ADCs go for Fleet Footwork and then struggle to find a good secondary tree, often defaulting into sorcery to pick up Celerity and Gathering Storm, over anything else, just because the flat MS it provides is important.

With the potential change coming up, Riot is apparently trying to make this rune more about champions with MS boosts rather than a mobility rune. Is this correct? Maybe. I'm not sure though. I'm not sure we should give a lot of bonuses for champions who are already having access to massively increase one of the most important stats in the game. Catching champions like Singed, Hecarim, Zilean is already hard enough because of their MS and now these champions get rewarded by getting quite a big boost to their AD or AP as well.

Honestly, I like how the rune currently is. It's a good choice to pick up to get some mobility for yourself, especially if you have nothing else to default to. It's also good for champions with some MS buff as well with the current stats. Honestly, no reason to change it.

Remember when we had 4,5% MS on the older runes by using 3 x 1,5% MS Quints?? I do.

Celerity will be hot garbage and more unexciting after the changes and then many players will focus on picking Transcendence instead. Oh but wait there is more! Then they will also nerf Transcendence becuz it'll clearly best rune option we could run!

BTW, we got 4 MS runes in the Sorcery Tree!!! 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!... and ONE SINGLE MANA RUNE!!!

No wonder manaflow band was nerfed to crap, there is literally no other option. The Orb is BS crap, Ultimate Hat was the only exciting rune but its the problem was IT HAD 2 compete with ManaFlow Band! How is it possible to not see this? It's so obvious!

And now we even lost UltHat to domination tree instead of just moving to a different sorcery row. S-L-O-W C-L-A-P [zombie-brand-clap]

You don't know how to use celecrity then. And transendence isn't usable in all situations or all champions either. No point i using it if you are not going max cd build or use it to fill the 10% gap.

You concluded that based on what exacly? Ya really think I dont know that yet? Am I dealing with one of those entitled know-it-all high elos players?

I wont argue with the likes of you on who I do use celerity and/or transcendence. I'm not taking advice on how to play or build my champions. I decide what I want to use, on who and when.

Ive been a Transcendence main since day 1 of new runes. riot balance team better not come for me once people make the switch.

Mcsquzzy1 votes

Transcendence was my pick for every urf match, why you may ask well I tend to gain either 48 AD or 60 AP from it every game

ZackTheWaffleMan1 votes

Yeah, I absolutely had to take it every game. It's why 6 Cleavers Poppy worked in Snowdown.

It's just more foolishness from the balance team. Not only is it mechanically pointless, but the latest change would also make it thematically pointless. Celerity means speed of movement, but now this is going to be primarily a damage rune. So, we're basically getting a rune called "fast movement" that improves damage. Makes sense.

They're trying to make people like Nimbus Cloak even though they CLEARLY don't.

EkyonKun1 votes

I'd like Nimbus Cloak more if it didn't have that stupid 1 second delay to it. Was that ever fixed? It felt so bad ulting then being like:

"Uh yes excuse me, just wait a bit, I gotta...okay there we go, MOVEMENT SPEED"

Snowman Arc1 votes

I'm not so against Nimbus Cloak, honestly. It doesn't seem as bad as people make it out to be. Imagine how many situations you can get out off in lane by just pressing R and running away instead of flashing or something.

Warlord Rhinark10 votes

Honestly.

The Sorcery tree needs a complete rework.

Just like the Resolve tree got.

Oleandervine4 votes

Yeah, with Nimbus Cloak, now a solid 3rd of the entire tree is devoted to a stat that isn't favored heavily by mages. No other tree in the game has a solid 3rd of it's runes dedicated to stats that are mostly irrelevant to the classes that the tree is supposed to be designed for.

I dont wanna see quinn rengar or hecacrim with this rune now, thats gonna be painfull

MooooooooreDakka2 votes

It shouldn't be an issue with quinn, attacking makes you lose the extra speed from behind enemy lines.

Snowman Arc1 votes

It shouldn't be an issue with Hecarim either, because I believe that you lose the extra MS as soon as you hit someone. Honestly, I'm not sure about when the MS from his E is lost. Does it grant bonus AD even when you hit someone and lost immediately after?

MooooooooreDakka1 votes

I don't know exactly how it works but I'm guessing you'll still have the movespeed when you hit them with the auto attack from devastating charge. I might just be thinking that because of the animation of deadly charge though.

Snowman Arc1 votes

Maybe that's right. I'm sure about losing it exactly after the AA though, which is why you usually wanna use Q before you hit them with the AA.

Done253 votes

They need to leave it at +3% move speed and just double the bonus to ad/ap value. The rune just seems so weak imo.

Snowman Arc5 votes

Right now, it's quite strong, especially in the jungle. Paired with Waterwalking, it allows some very strong pathing options.

break Hecarim

i wish theyd take their fucking hands off that rune. its in a good spot.

both, transcendence and celerity are equally valuable choices imo. no one takes absolute focus, but only because its so niche to long range poke mages.

Snowman Arc1 votes

Honestly, Transcendence is weird to me. I can see it having quite a lot of power in it in certain situations, but the fact that it only starts working after the 12th minute makes it so that you essentially play without a rune for the most important stage of the game, which is quite bad. I'd rather have Absolute Focus on champions that don't lose HP, or regen it quite easily. On Graves, for example, it can be good, because his clears are always healthy so he will always be getting the extra AD.

But yeah, Celerity is in a pretty good spot right now and has no need for a change. If Riot wants the other two to be picked more, maybe they should buff those instead.

It's bonus movement speed gets converted, not total, right? Does it stack? Or does the 3% only apply to the their base movement then the bonus adaptive damage after?

So Janna with boots is 340, times 1.03 is 350.2. Or is it 315 base, times 1.03 to 324.45, then plus boots is 349.45?

Eitherway, the bonus damage is only based on the bonus movement, not total movement. So Pantheon would get 35 bonus from boots and the rune, so a total 1.68 bonus AD.

.... Geez, didn't realise how pathetic that is.

Snowman Arc3 votes

The 3% is applied to the base, which is 315 for Janna. Anything else she gets from her kit is bonus, so it's ignored. Also, any bonus you have is converted. Seeing how there is no item that grants base MS, I guess that if X = Current MS - Base MS, then the adaptive stat bonus is either 0.046X or 0.08X.

Therefore, on a bonus of 150 MS, which is something like boots + triforce with its proc, you gain like 7 AD. LOL.

Honestly, a good change would be to calculate the bonus AD or AP before the cap on the MS bonuses.

Celecrity is love, celecrity is life. Celecrity wrecks your adc's sup. Speaking of celecrity, a lot of champiom's thst get bonus ms from their kit and items use it. Or Champions who combine it with other movement speed masteries like nimbus cloak, approach velocity and sorcery's keystone Phase Rush. Especially Phase Rush and Celecrity synergy.

Ultimate hat gone. Celerity getting gutted... its like they really hate the fact that Garen runs sorcery.

Whats next, they gonna put phase rush into perception?

The main problem with Garen aren't the runes, it's his kit. The runes usually enhance the one's kit to be supper good or supper annoying while garen only get's burst of damage or defenses out of it. Still doesn't solve the kiting problem whatsoever. Also, if you ever wanted to run Phase Rush on Garen shouldn't his E have a similar interaction with it like it does with Electrocute? Aka proc phase rush on 2(+q) or 3 spins for burst of speed that can synsrgize with Garen's Phage rushing build? Either way, still solves nome of his problems and I went off topic too much.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

I think they are changing it because right now it is kinda always the right choice to take. Even if you play a champion without MS buffs in the kit, getting these 3% extra movement speed is quite good. Movement speed in general is a powerful stat and many people will take it naturally, especially squishies who want to kite like ADCs and Mages.

With that change, the rune becomes less desirable on champions without any MS buffs, but it gets better for champs with it. Meaning that there will now clearer cases of champions who want to run it and champions who don't. The rune becomes less of a generalist and hopefully the diversity in its tier will go up.

Wild Geese1 votes

The rune isn't all that great, but the sorcery tree kind of sucks for options, everything is very specific for champion needs or synergy. Like Transcendence overcap only works on a few builds. Absolute Focus sucks,.. etc..

I don't think changing celerity this way will actually make it picked less - Yes; you get less movespeed. But you get more damage from movespeed (and you gain more movespeed from items than celrity) - So the rune will absolutely be picked exactly as much as now, it would still scale great for a sustained damage dealer and that's why they take it.

Gathering Strom is a similar case where.. for the most part is too good to pass up and any sustained damage dealer (a lot of those) will take it.

Maybe Riot should just accept that... some runes are going to be picked more than others.

Snowman Arc1 votes

I honestly find Gathering Storm quite useless and only take it if Waterwalking can't be taken.

Celerity I found to be pretty OP for anything. I play Graves, Sivir and Janna mostly, so, for Janna, it's a very strong choice because she gets a lot of MS and goes into Sorcery, Sivir also gets a lot of MS from passive. Sometimes, on Sivir, I take Resolve so that I'm healthier early game.

On Graves jungle, I used to go Domination and take Zombie Ward (before the nerfs at least) and that lethality thing. Even though they were good, as soon as I tried Celerity + Waterwalking, I found it to be way too powerful to just pass upon. They difference in MS I had and the ability I had to outpace the enemy jungler and create big leads is just insane, even though it seems trivial at first.

Generally, I value MS quite a lot, so anything that increases it I like. I liked the Cloud drake buff, for example.

The reason I don't like Gathering Storm is that it doesn't grant anything for the first 10 minutes of the game, kinda like Transcendence. Seeing how games are decided by how well you can snowball in the first 5-10 minutes, taking GS I find to be quite weird. Even at 10-20 minutes, you only get 4.8 AD or 8 AP, which translated in gold values, it's 170 gold for AD and 175 for AP, during the 10-20 minutes, which is like getting an extra minion wave. So, for the first 10 minutes, which are the most important, you get nothing, and for the next 10 minutes, you only get like an extra cannon minion wave, which, again, it's nothing. At 20 minutes, the gold granted is around 500, which, at that stage it's not as important, seeing how the game is probably snowballed by one team and probably either already finished, or technically over.

With that said, for ADCs especially there isn't much else to take in Sorcery. Celerity is good, but as it stands right now, I'd honestly just take Nimbus Cloak on Sivir and have the extra MS on top of the existing MS my R gives and make some easy engages or escapes.
