Can athenes be a mage item again?

I dont know what happened. The item used to be a really valuable mage item and then riot decided to make it a useless support item that almost nobody takes. I miss building this item on mid mages.

Most people don't use it because its extremely slot inefficient and other items are clearly better. For example,

item 3285 = 90 AP, 600 Mana. 20% CDR, Bonus 100+ damage on your combo item 3174 = 50 AP, 30 MR, 10% Cdr, some mana regen, insignificant heal that requires charging

Why would you take athenes over ludens? Ludens does everything twice better than athenes, besides the 30 MR which is very miniscule.

I would increase the ability power, remove the mana regen to ability power passive (mage items dont have mp5), and increase the mr. Also change the build path and gold.

Right now, it's item 3028 + item 3108 + 400 gold (2100 gold)

You get 50 AP, 30 MR, 10% CDR. 100% mana regen and 5 ap for every 25% mana regen (hence 50 AP, the item itself is actually 30)

I'd make it item 3028 + item 3108 + item 1052 + 665 gold (2800 gold) and change the stats to

70 AP, 40 MR, 10% CDR, 100% mana regen. I'd change the passive too:

UNIQUE Passive: Your abilities deal 5% bonus damage. 300% of the damage dealt to champions by this passive is stored as a charge which can be expended to heal an ally for up to 200-400 (based on level) health when healing or shielding them.

Please make athenes a mage item again!

It's meant to be a support item, I'm not sure why you're explaining the item in the context of someone like Malz buying it, when it's more for champions like Ivern, Karma etc.

Why would a mage even want Athenes even with buffed stats if it retains the same passive? It would be useful to only Lux and Ori at that point, and Morg middle to a lesser extent.

While, yes, those are the intended users of the item, its just not ideal for them. Its incredibly slot inefficient and the passive requires doing a good amount of damage if you want significant healing (about every 7 points of damage equates to 1 point of healing). If this was actually going to work as a support item (it was designed for mages in the first place!) it would need a pretty significant overhaul.

yet they also get a good amount of mana regen with increase the ap ratio of the item which then leads to more damage which then allows them to heal for more. combined with the correct runes its pretty strong.

and its still viable on mages if u use mana regen and need the cdr/mr it would scale decently with a mana regen items.

Thats the problem, there are no mage items that give % base mana regen. Only support items. So the only way a mage can buy it is if they buy support items.

Also, 5 AP per 25% isnt really that good. At most you'll be getting 300-400% mana regen which is only 60-80 AP, which isnt enough for an enchanter to deal sufficient damage. And thats just if you go out of your way to itemize for mpt5.

you are forgetting the base ap it gives too, plus the regen, plus the cdr plus the mr

so 30 base ap + the 5ap per 25% which works with manaflow ban , and it gives 100% mana regen, 10% cdr and 30mr all for 2100 gold

and all honesty it should have been a support item to begin with it just didnt have enough passives and stats to help supports other then the raw ap/regen and mr it use to provide.

Support items in general are horribly slot inefficient in exchange for their powerful passives/actives.

I've had some fun using it on Orianna tbh. But traditional mid laners they just stole it from, and there's no way most supports will give up anything, especially enchanter ones.

Athene's was originally a mage item. It gave around 40 MR, I think 60-70 AP, 100% mana regen, 30% of mana restored on kill or assist, and 2% of mana recovered every 5 seconds(iirc). It was a great defensive purchase and enchanters stole it from us when everyone was complaining about the support role and Riot decided to buff enchanters into the skies. They're only now at decent to low levels of play and that's because more tanks are being played and they nerfed heal and shield power a few times(which imo shouldn't even be a stat).

It would be nice if it could be remade as a health sustain item for mages who don't build RoA.

It is. Just stack mana regen ap items and you golden
