Can we all agree that Bork is overtuned right now?

LyingOnLine··49 votes·4,887 views

We're seeing it rushed in the LCS;we're seeing it rushed top lane; Twitch, Kog, and Lucian are the top winrate ADCs on the power of it; Hell, we're even seeing fucking Ashe rush it. Ashe!

So what do we do about new Bork? Chop 5 AD off of it? Make it cost 300 more gold? Weaken the active?

What do you think?

I really do not like this attitude of "I'm seeing X item Everywhere, therefore, it must be OP." Especially since people are only pointing to the frequency of the items appearance, and not the specifics of why such an item may be Oppressive, or OP.

For starters, who is exactly complaining about this item? Other ADC mains who think it's just a powerful first item? Tank mains who think's it's HP shred is too much? Both? In the former case, I don't expect to see much action since Riot pretty much stated that they intended to make it much better off early on. As for the tank issue, I have more condolences, as I find it crazy that the tank shredding passive, also applies LS. (No problem with the LS on the item itself)

Over all, BotRK does have a history of doing a bunch of things, as well as dragged a bunch of different directions. Personally, I point my finger at the %HP shred. It gives a Crazy amount of tank melting power on High AS champs. That HP shred also works as a base damage items on Bruisers, (alone, or paired with Trinity Force) And since that passive applies LS, it just gives you that much more dueling power.

It is about time it comes back into play. It was so bad for so long.

LyingOnLine1 votes

It...really wasn't? Or maybe that's the actual problem with Bork. It's only ever worth building if it's OP.

JavelinJoe7 votes

It was out shined by lethality, Warlords Bloodlust, and burst/poke champs like Varus, Jhin, and Caitlyn. Now that many of those have been nerfed, and BORK has been buffed, it is seeing a lot more popularity.

Ashe Twitch Lucian Vayne Kalista KogMaw Tristana Ezreal Draven

Blade of the ruined king is too much of a generalist item, I don't see a single reason to rush another item over it except maybe in Ezreal's case.

Aeró9 votes

everyone on that list other than draven, trist, and maybe ashe benefits from building bork first. i still dont think its broken tho

Requiemsfire3 votes

What makes you think they don't benefit from rushing BOTRK first? In fact the last I saw Ash in competitive play, blade of the ruined king was her very first item. Trist always built BOTRK, I was up on the fence about Draven but it turns out he synergizes with it now better than ever before thanks to it now leaning more towards the AD aspect and since attack speed is still a very valuable stat on him it's really good for him.

Aeró1 votes

bork is good on all of them but i still think dravens better off with bloodthirster into crit build. i completely agree on ashe tho. i tried bork > runaans > black cleaver and its amazing.

I'd say, it is a bit underpriced, especially compared to the other primary Lifesteal items (and even the secondary ones).

Primary: item 3072 3700 gold item 3812 3500 gold item 3153 3300 gold

Secondary: item 3139 3600 gold item 3074 3500 gold

Bump its cost to 3500 or 3600 total, add a Long Sword to the recipe, done.

Or, even better, have Cutlass build out of Pickaxe and Vampiric Sceptre again, for about 2k total cost, 40 AD and some 10-12% Lifesteal. Sol knows Pickaxe could use the love. Have that new Cutlass combine with Recurve to the final 3600 gold BotRK and it is a done deal.

BORK: 40 attack damage = Gold 1400 25% attack speed = Gold 625 15% life steal = Gold 562.5 Total Gold Value = Gold 2587.5 15 on-hit physical damage = Gold 375 (This is the minimum damage on the passive) Total Gold Value = Gold 2962.5 Gold Efficiency*

Blade of the Ruined King item.png Blade of the Ruined King is 89.77% gold efficient without the active. Blade of the Ruined King item.png Blade of the Ruined King can become gold efficient if the passive grants a minimum of 29 on-hit damage (This can be achieved if target current health is 363 or higher).

The problem isn't its early strength as much as its later strength. The first passive proc on bork on a 4k health tank is 40000.08=320 damage. To give that a value we multiply it by 25 gold per 1 on-hit damage. So 25320= 8000 gold. Its gold efficiency in that moment is total value of stats / total cost of item = (8000+2962.5)/3300 * 100%= 332.2% gold efficient. And it continues to be insanely gold efficient up until the target's current health is 363. EDIT: I just realized i counted the minimum 15 on-hit damage twice. It doesnt change the numbers significantly enough to matter though.

The moral of the story shouldn't come as a shock to anyone: Riot severely undervalues all types of %health damage. There is pretty much no decent way to adjust an item that just scales without a cap. Same goes for abilities that do %health damage. As a result, bork will forever either be underpowered or ridiculously OP but never anywhere in-between unless the passive is given a power cap.

MangelinaJolie2 votes

BotRK is physical damage. If it's on a tank it's reduced.

Kilanost6 votes

So is all the other damage. Its not worth less because its reduced by armor.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

Using geometric mean, you can convert the current HP damage into an average max HP damage. Doing that, BotRK has about 3% max HP damage.

With that, and without counting the minimum damage twice, the item is gold-efficient against a target with 1467 max HP.

However, what is really interesting is how it compares to a Bloodthirster (or similar high-AD item) in terms of damage increase for ADCs:

With 0/30/50/70/80/100% Crit Chance and IE, the average DPA increase of 35 AD is 35/50.75/61.25/71.75/77/87.5. Using the averaged %-HP damage, the target needs to have 1167/1692/2042/2392/2567/2917 max HP for BotRK to result in a higher average DPA than Bloodthirster. This is without accounting for the AS BotRK gives!

Kilanost1 votes

Thank you for that. I was thinking about trying to make a conversion like that but didn't know how to go about it. When is it appropriate to use geometric means?

Aimléss6 votes

BOTRK has been subpar forever now, and when it finally competes with the top lane items item 3071 item 3078 and mid lane items item 3165 it needs a nerf? Wow these boards bro...

BremerdanGorst5 votes

IDK if it's really busted, so much as better on AD carries instead of the traditional users, like Xin or Irelia. Though Lucian kinda abuses it I suppose.

JavelinJoe4 votes

Put the lifesteal back to 10 and you should be good. If not that, then add 5-10% attack speed and lower damage by 10 or add 300-400 gold like you suggested might be a good solution. The thing is, it is too beneficial in too many areas. Second best lifesteal, decent amount of damage, some attack speed, awesome passive AND and active which can help in engage/disengage, and one of the best build paths for an AD item since it is not reliant on B.F. Sword and every part of the item is useful and cheep. Not to mention that with the nerf to Warlords Bloodlust, cutlass is way better than B.F. Sword in early trades because of the sustain and active. Even if you come out of a trade slightly worse, you just heal it back up off of minions and reengage the enemy since they could not heal as fast or had to use a health pot.

Blakiepug4 votes

BotRK was never bad before the most recent changes. Sure it was a fringe item, but it wasn't bad. I don't know why they changed it in the first place. Why would you want an item that deals %hp damage to be meta? Personally, I wish Riot would try to make certain items have right and wrong situations for when to use them as right now it seems pretty silly seeing item 3153 item 3078 item 3071 being built on every single AD champion.

Let's go with, there's an upcoming tank update, ergo having a strong anti tank option is a good thing to keep them in check post update

Ralanr1 votes

Which they're probably working on. I know crit is getting some changes and crit tends to be very anti tank (when combined with %armor pen anyway).

I guess... tbh, I would prefer they just stopped doing class updates. I haven't enjoyed a single one yet. The other thing I don't understand about the direction of this tank update is Riot has said the goal is to give tanks less reliable damage, but then the Galio rework is released and what does he have on his kit? They changed the AP scaling on his tornado/smite ability and made it deal %hp dmg. I feel like over the past year, not enough damage has been locked away behind scalings which has led to base stats being more important than they probably should be.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

How is percentage max HP damage more reliable? That damage requires you to hit a skillshot and for the enemy to stand in the aoe, his E and ult are very telegraphed too.

SlaktarTasken3 votes

Several posters claimed that Bork would have been fine if it was buffed at half the value. Heck, some even claimed just upping the %health damage by 1%% and adding 5 AD would have made the item considerably more attractive.

Ofc, small buffs wouldn't just cut it right? Gotta do the dirty and bust it one shot.

Sometimes I wonder if Riot enjoys pissing their playerbase off.

chipndip13 votes

item 3190 Wow, the same item is being built on all marksmen? item 3107

Dear me, such an unheard of issue!

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Maybe have the passive scale up over time? So it's worse in early trades but good in extended fights? I dunno, I'm just throwing things around here.

6Sfool2 votes

What's wrong with rushing an item with mixed stats? It has everything I want in the early game, plus it scales. It's not op per se, it's just well rounded. Plus the active is not nearly as strong as it was on the pbe, or even before the rework.

DarkRitual2 votes

Half the amount that it heals off it's % scaling damage.

Ackelope2 votes

I don't see what the problem is with Ashe building it. She goes with it mostly pretty well tbh.

LyingOnLine2 votes

She's one of the most crit-linked ADCs in the game.

Ackelope6 votes

being linked to crit doesn't make one adverse to building bork. it's more that being linked to having lots of auto attacks (or in Ezreal's case, long range application of on-hit effects) that makes one want to build bork, which Ashe definitely has. It's the fact that she has a lot of attack speed, and just buying one crit item early doesn't give a lot of return until you get others to back it up. I think it generally makes sense to build something that can get you through that point more reliably before you decide to invest in crit.

I made a thread about this just after the BOtRK buff, listed the OP champions (twitch, kog...), gave a reasonable suggestion, even saying this would pop up on the boards some time after the patch.

Downvoted to oblivion. All that downvoted that thread, please apologise personally below. I was right, u were wrong.

EDIT: Link to post https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/whtGztP4-blade-of-the-ruined-king-was-seriously-over-buffed?

It's funny, given that post contained ONLY facts (and a request), but no opinion whatsoever

How many chromosomes do you have?

Spicy Rice1 votes

While the champions have seen winrate increases, that doesn't mean the item has been overbuffed.

Therefore, your statement that Botrk has been seriously overbuffed is an opinion that you have extrapolated from winrate data

When every ADC rushes an assassin-made itemitem 3147 item 3142 , but when item 3153 gets picked, suddenly you have a problem.

So what do you want ADC to rush instead? item 3089 ?

Most people think that Ashe has some special crit interaction going on that gives her more power when going crit, but that is simply not the case. it's just crits without RNG with independent 10% bonus damage.

Her Q gives her attack speed, so I think BotrK should at least be an option and then BotrK is kind of fotm so lets wait a bit. xD

If Ashe isn't allowed to build Botrk then Vayne should have even less reason to do so.

sirwaterfles1 votes

Let lucians passive not proc it.

SoI invictus1 votes

I see it on Nocturne. I see it on Lucian. I see it on Zed,Xin or every frikin ad champ.

Nah i think the item its just fine. Not overtuned or smth kappa

Cosmic Warper1 votes

No, it's not. Just because it's being rushed as a first item on many marksmen and top laners doesn't mean its overpowered. Honestly the only problem is lucian abusing bork with his passive.

The only nerf that should happen is the lifesteal on the hp shred. That shouldn't exist imo.

initialbc1 votes

I think its literally just Lucian's passive abusing the on-hit. The item isn't overtuned. Kalista will be useless if they re-nerf it.

RexSaur1 votes

Botrk was terrible before, now its actually viable.

Lucian needs nerfs, not botrk.
