Potential Ekko buffs in 9.16: Wasted buffs in the wrong direction!

As an Ekko main, I see that Riot is planning on buffing him in patch 9.16. I should be celebrating, you might think. After all, Ekko didn't receive any significant buffs for 3 whole years. Sadly, Riot completely missed the mark on how Ekko should be buffed and aimed their changes in the wrong direction.

First, let us see what are the buffs Ekko is, most likely, receiving in 9.16:

  • E - Phase Dive: bonus magic damage increased by 10 at all ranks (from 40 / 65 / 90 / 115 / 140 to 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150)
  • R - Chronobreak: cooldown down from 110 / 90 / 70 sec to 110 / 70 / 50 sec.

Ask any decent Ekko main in the world, they will tell you that these changes are not needed at all, and do not fix Ekko's biggest problem, which is his early game and super weak laning phase. Sure, these buffs are welcomed but, we didn't need them at all.

  • Buffing his E is ok but our E damage is already decent enough as it is. Sure this will help us trade ever so slightly better in lane but, it's no big deal. We've survived without this 10 extra base damage for years, adding it now will change little to nothing. And I'm emphasizing on the " base damage " aspect of it, because it's not like +10% AP scaling, which would be a real buff. 10 extra base damage is nothing and doesn't change his damage output by a relevant amount, really.

  • As for Ekko's ultimate, this completely surprised me. The R already had a decent CD on it, and I, personally, never had a problem with its CD. I even think that the CD is a bit low for such an ultimate, but I digress. Lowering the CD is just a very lazy way to buffing Ekko, and it's gonna push players to be more reckless and get worse with their decision making, as Ekko's playstyle is based around patience and good decision making. I guess they're doing this to push new players, and players who don't play him as often, to play him more and forcing his pick rate to increase so lazily. And this pisses me off, really.

What Ekko really needs is this:

  • Buff Q's damage early game so we can actually farm and last hit with it, in laning phase, since the Q takes a decent time to comeback and the Q1 damage part of it is just laughable and can't last hit for sh*t. This is even more urgent especially that Ekko has so many bad matchups that can zone him out of the minion wave easily. Right now, not only we need rank 5 in Q (lvl 9), but also we need at least 90 AP to be able to even one shot the backline minions, for crying out loud. Before that point, it's so hard to last hit minions with Q without going OOM or stepping in melee range to get the cs and get poked out of lane for free. Needless to say, laning phase pre-lvl 9 (and 90 AP) is so bad.

----> This problem is easy to fix: Since Q1 and Q2 have seperate AP scaling on them (Q1 has 30% AP scaling and Q2 has 60% AP scaling), Riot can actually target buffs one of them (Q1 would be my target of choice) without over buffing the total damage of Q. And this will help with the laning phase without making Ekko an oppressive laner, like so many other champs in league nowadays.

  • If you wanna buff his E damage (even though I think it's unnecessary), give him increased 10% AP scaling on it, not this BS 10 extra base damage that barely changes anything.

Ekko is, by no means, broken or OP. He's not overall weak, either. He's actually pretty balanced, I would say. Well, I should say " was " since if the new R buff goes to live servers, people are gonna start complaining about how broken Ekko is and how his R is pretty OP and spammable, and that would lead to Riot nerfing Ekko, unfairly, by targeting other parts of his kit (Riot style), when it didn't need to come to this in the first place.

So please Riot, stop buffing champs in the wrong areas of their kit and actually start listening to your community feedback, goddamnit!

Issue with buffing his Q early to clear just makes him anivia level of annoying when trying to shove.

That's why I suggested to buff his Q1, since its damage has the least AP scaling. This is just aimed at helping last hitting minions. This will barely has any impact on his shoving capabilities, since even current Ekko can shove the wave easily. But the difference is that, right now, with his current Q1 numbers, he barely can last hit anything effectively, so he just ends up losing cs. Compare this to someone like Zed who can easily and safely farm with his Q damage since it's actually high enough to allow him to last hit effectively.

I'm not saying that Ekko needs to be like Zed, I'm just saying that Ekko's Q damage, early game, is so bad that he can't farm consistently well against most of his matchups.

Buff Q's damage early game

This is how you get an uninteractive lane. If he needs buffs it will be anything that's NOT his Q damage.

He doesn't need buffs to his Q. And I say that from a jungle ekko perspective. A more harder q would make him clear much safer and faster I'd argue to him being pick or ban meta because of it. They could give him reduction to monsters to even it out, but its still more ganking pressure.

they could combat this buff by lowering his w passive dmg, so he wouldn't clear as fast and he would deal less damage to low hp targets. Ekko is mainly played as an assassin, so leaving him with an auto attack based mechanic seems pointless anyway

He doesn't need a safer laning phase. He's already insanely safe early, and even more post-6.

Also, Ekko doesn't even need higher damage.

You imply that you play him, but you don't think he has high damage already? lmao.

He is one of the least safe champions in mid lane. The higher you climb with him, the more you realize how easily ekko can be abused.

Yea, the laning phase is depressing when facing players who abuse Ekko's weaknesses and the q buffs would solve that. I guess the reason they're staying away from his q is because league is a very fragile game and ekko is a very flexible champion that can be played in different styles and considering how creative pro players can get when trying to make up new strats, riot is probably afraid to disrupt the current game balance. Though lowering the CD of his ult like that is horrible, with 40% cdr and ultimate hunter you can lower his cd to below 30 seconds and while that's good for ekko mains, it's going to overbuff him for a few patches but then get a hard nerf and become unplayable. It's probably gonna be another misplaced buff, just as you said.

Sorry to hear, riot doesn't care what mains think when they go to buff a champion.

Riot didn't care what we said when they buffed tahm`s q slow and cd in order to compensate for his W nerf.

Then ofc he becomes overpowered against immobile champs and they repeated the pattern when they gave him a minipatch buff after 9.14

In the end all you will be able to do is say "I told you so" that's the culmination of your effort, the time spent on this thread, the thought you put into it.

I don't think it's the wrong direction, but the wrong choice. As another Ekko main, I see Ekko's R buff as absurd but I also see the reasoning behind it. Ekko is always putting himself in melee range whenever he tries to get dmg in, which is terrible since he's essentially a mage. It reminds me back when Blaustoise was talking about how he wanted players to see Ekko as "this champion that can just take risks and make all these plays" rather than some waveclearing bot. For that same reason I think buffing Q also isn't the choice to go.

I'd honestly be fine with Ekko trading off other parts of his kit for this CD buff if he ever becomes overbearing, which I'm sure he'll become.

he has the CD reduction on his R because it disproportionately effects is Pro play potential. While a lot of action and game deciding can happen before level 11, a buff like that this far out from Worlds gives pros time to practice and devise comps around him. In turn, this allows him to replace Corki's safety, and as an assassin deal with Azir and perhaps Qiyana, along with the other assassins getting buffed, maybe as an alternative to Kassadin.

Id like to see Ekko getting picked again, but I guess he does already have an eSports skin so its not like hes never been on the world stage before

I've been maining Ekko Ekko in S9. All what you've said is right: I don't think that Riot has made the right choice to save this champion from weak midlane tier lists... Because for late game, I'm just dominating especially when going Gathering Storm secondary. This only depends on your laning phase. Now I've been going Teleport on Ekko mid and it really annoys me: Throwing my Q not only deals "massages" to the minions but also destroys my mana bar

It's either one of the two: 1-Buff Ekko's Q dammage significantly for both Q1 and Q2 2-Focus on the mana costs problems to allow him to play confortably during his terrible laning phase

I can't count how many times I get one shotted by Talon Talon or Zed Zed level 3... Stepping in to last hit the minions in melee range is the dumbest thing as an AP assassin. Riot just needs to make Ekko a strong early game champion so that we can help other lanes also with our great movement speed.

Riot guys... Just help the boy who shattered time to become stronger and more efficient against decent matchups.

Ekko Didn't need any form of increased damage or decreased CDR, he's been bullied out of mid-lane due to other mid-laners doing his job better especially when you consider how mana hungry his kit is in general he's much suited to early game skirmishes and very early game kill pressure; personally I feel that mid-lane isn't the place for Ekko and a lot of other Ekko's agree with me; It would be nice to see him have some form of presance on mid-lane however damage adjustments are not what he needs. Ekko needs better base mana regeneration and his damage how it currently is in 9.15 is perfect in my own opinion.

the ekko buffs went through and he is now decidedly S-tier. expect him to show up often at worlds, plenty highlight clips to be made.
