Amumu main since season 3: The buff to Amumu seems out of place

Amumu: Goal: Simply put, give some unique scaling to Amumu's defensive mechanic. Tantrum (E)

NEW :: Passive physical damage reduction gains additional benefit equal to 3% of Amumu's bonus Armor and Magic Resist

Basically my biggest problem with this change is the following:

  • Amumu's core items aren't armor/mr items
  • It doesn't help AP amumu
  • You don't usually buy armor/mr until lategame
  • The passive is tied to how useful resistences are
  • Full tank Amumu is not the best build
  • It doesn't help Amumu to overcome any of his weaknesses

Bruiser Amumu's core items: This is his best build. item 1401 item 3047 item 3116 item 3151 item 3001

Leaves you with 1 situational item which is most of the times grievious wounds item 3165 item 3075 item 3143 item 3083 item 3065 item 3190 item 3194

If you take extreme condition rune you roughly end up with additional 200 resistences combined so that is a 6% physical damage reduction in lategame. That is a pretty meaningless buff because will it take an adc 1 extra AA to kill you?

When I play full AP amumu (which is feast or famine high risk but huge reward when ahead item 1402 item 3020 item 3089 ) I don't even build armor/mr until I have 3 items and usually go for Banshee and Zhonya. Full tank Amumu falls of hard in lategame when he should be at his strongest. It is really a lot better to do damage than to soak damage in lategame because adc's and mages have outscaled you as a tank. You just become an ultbot meatshield for your team.

Also the new passive is good when bonus armor is efficient but when you have items that cut your armor by 35% and in teamfights even more with item 3036 item 3071 armor just isn't in a great spot. So whenever armor is bad, the passive will be bad. And when armor is good the passive might be broken if you stack armor.

Amumu's weaknesses He gets invaded on his second buff by 50% the jungler roster already. The scuttle changes period. He can't contest them. He is great to take camps with his AoE clears but sucks to take individual camps. here is a full list of champs that he can't contest for scuttle. He is also bad at soloing drakes and can't solo herald.
LeeSin Evelynn Nidalee Camille Elise Ekko Graves Jax Irelia Khazix Kindred Olaf Nocturne Nunu Pantheon RekSai Skarner Shyvana Shaco Rengar Trundle Tryndamere Warwick Vi Udyr XinZhao Kayn MasterYi

Amumu can't fight any of this champs during early game and most of them never. The buff won't change that. Also Amumu lost speed on his early clears because the blue and red buff don't have the small dudes to reduce his E cooldown and succeeding to secure the 2 buffs straight away I already consider a success against a lot of champs. Also he doesn't have any form of lifesteal/spell vamp or shield/heal ability to stay healthy in the jungle. This makes him weak vs invades and a lot of the times they will steal your camps.

By the time you get level 6 you have already been flamed by the losing lanes who got camped. Your first ult needs to secure a kill/objective or you will fall even more behind and won't be able to come back. So you already had a bad early and then midgame starts to kick in and you gank with ult up, enemy flashes and survives and you are a sitting duck for another 150 seconds. So first you are heavily penalized for picking a weak early game jungler and then the risk/reward just isn't worth it once start hitting your midgame. A lot of the times I consider Amumu a win-more situation champ. When your team is ahead Amumu is awesome at securing those teamfights and the lead, but when you are behind he just tends to suck more and more. But when your team is already ahead without any meaningful contribution you could probably just have played any champ and secure that win nowadays.

What I think Amumu needs is pretty simple

  • Buff his base armor
  • Reduce the cooldown of his ult
  • Buff Liandry to 1.5% instead of 1%
  • Improve Rylai's build path so it build out of a item 1011 once again

Its nothing fancy. An increase in base armor would mean he stays more healthy in the jungle and maybe he can survive an invade or try to contest 2 vs 2 a scuttle. It would also make his early ganks a bit safer. Amumu has no mobility nor escapes other than trying to Q to a camp. Whenever someone is on top of him during his early game he dies. Second thing would be to decrease the cd of his ult. Current league is about early game and trying to snowball. When your champ is already bad at that but also gets heavily penalized with a 2,5 minutes ult cd it just becomes unviable. Amumu's core build doesn't include any cdr other than Abyssal Mask and he needs to wait for level 10 to get the 10% from the rune. Ultimate hat got removed from the sorcey tree which really hurt him. Last you can buff Liandry.

I think it's an interesting change in concept because it adds incentives to consider resist items... But the numbers are a joke.

Like if you build the core build you posted and throw in a Thornmail for 80 more armor, then your bonus defenses are 100 armor and 55 MR, 155 total. 3% of that is ... 4.65 wow.

This isn't a buff. It's nothing.

Exactly that is why I think its out of place. Also they should buff his early game a bit where he is extremely vulnerable and gets abused by almost any other jungler

You could build Zzrot Portal + Gargoyle Stoneplate and you still only get like +10-11 off this in teamfights late game lol holy crap what a pointless change

well you are playing ap mummy. these changes are to buff his tankyness which he is indeed a tank. so maybe you would build him with more tankyness in mind

My main build when I play Amumu... item 1402 item 3047 (sometimes either item 3111 or item 3009) item 3110 item 3001 item 3075 item 3083

Then you must just be digging this change. I also appreciate anyone who also likes tank Amumu

That is called AP offtank/bruiser and further validates my points

that build you posted was horrible. not nearly tanky enough.

Go to op.gg or u.gg and look up highest winrate build in high eelo. It is almost exactly what I posted

Tanks are allowed to build AP. This isn't anything new.

It think it really is meant to help Amumu be a tank since that is what he really is meant to be. I know some people like making him damage oiaanted, between his stun, passive, and ult, I've always been under the impression that he's meant to be a tank.

Everythign about him has always screamed tank to me, and this is a small buff that helps with it. It's not game changing, but is still a night little improvement.

Its a placebo and a noobtrap change because the buff won't be meaningful unless you buy a lot of resistences but when you do you are not building him optimal.

Amumu isn't meant to be a tank he is a bruiser. Lorewise he isn't a tank either. A putrified small kid with bandages isn't a tank. He curses the people surrounding him. You want to build some damage and Rylai to stick to them and a bit of resistences to survive as long as possible but also dealing the most damage possible. If you build him more tank you might survive longer and stick longer to them but in the end deal less damage, and when you build too much damage you won't stick long enough so you will deal less damage (unless you go full burst). So its a tradeoff. Ideally speaking you don't want to get too tanky but also you don't want to build too much AP.

So there is an equilibrium at which getting more tanky isn't efficient and getting more damage isn't efficient. Every game you want to hit that fine spot where both are optimal. That is why items that give HP+AP or resistences+AP are so good on Amumu and why this change will accomplish nothing

Fun fact, Riot officially classifies Amumu as a Vangaurd. AKA, an offensive oriented, fight initiating TANK.

Building damage is fine and all, but as long as he stays alive, applies his debuff, stuns his enemies, and spam is aoe abilities, he's always going to do decent damage in his own right. He doesn't need to be a primary damage dealer, but it is crucial for him to stay alive long enough to mess the enemy team up. But if you just build AP on him, he'll just blow up before that can happen.

I suppose that this all gives him a bit of a luxury. You can build AP with the goal of just trying to do consistent damage like a battlemage, or you can build full tank and be more of a team-oriented Amumu by jumping in face-first and 5-man stun the enemy team. Both are effective and you're underestimating the one you don't like.

The numbers are a little small, admittedly, but I think Riot would really prefer AP Amumu to not be an extremely tanky character as well as respectable damage dealer.

Making AP Amumu very durable is, actually, exactly what I don't want to play against as it brings back horrible memories of Tank Ekko, but reverse. When a tank/AP champion is able to build like the opposite, but still have all the attributes of the other. I do, however, agree that his ult CD, especially early, is a little high. For a respectable reason though, since it is still, to this day, one of the best ultimates in the game, simply due to the value of a decent burst of damage combined with a 2 second root and disarm, all occurring essentially instantly around him.
